    I also collect 78 rpm records myself and have often seen people send records incorrectly packaged. It is always a pity to see beautiful and rare records damaged and especially when it could have been prevented! Nice and clear video, thank you very much!

    Glad you are showing folks some of the outrageous ways sellers often send 78 rpms through the mails. After numerous "snafus" with broken discs, I finally began to assume that Ebay sellers who did not specialize in 78s - might not have-a-clue as to how to pack/ship. I discreetly suggest sandwiching discs between cardboard squares. Recently, I mailed a rare Black Patti disc using unplayable Edison diamond discs as sandwiching material. Vertical packing as you have mentioned - is so important - is seems that the rarest 78s are always the ones to break first. [Retired sound recordings archivist - Library of Congress].

    Sealed plastic sleeves are rapid death to 78s stored in any fashion in alternating freezing and warming temperatures.

    I would like to hear how one played with the bubble wrap marks. Still way to many to store like that.

    I think I know what happened to the records. You may not be aware of this, but I saw two furry quadrapeds lurking around that bin. Knowing of their frisky, wild behavior, I think they are the culprits!

    I store my records horizontally on the wood shelves inside the victrola. Is this a problem? I figured they were made for that. All of mine are in papar sleeves though.

    You are limited by the shallow shelves as to how many you can stack. Not too much weight that way-/i guess they took that into consideration.

    All my (78s) are stored in book albums. In handling these type of albums, never, never open these up laying flat...keep them in a vertical position when removing records!

    We remove all of our 78s from the albums and place them in individual sleeves. Too often we find the edges broken off when people store them in albums.

    @@1974hurtbrown paper bags--may be cheaper? i have a Sam’s membership. Wonder if they have suitable bags for now. Probably, though, will just use plain newsprint or brown craft paper.15 in x 60 yards at Harbor Freight for $7 Any issue using masking tape to seal folded-over paper to close sides? Should not penetrate anything/ real sleeves with cutout holes are nicer, but i think using the roll of brown paper to make my own will be much cheaper and it would be easier than cutting down big sheets of newsprint to fit. 15” width of the rolled paper should be easy enough to fold-to-fit either 10 inch or 12 inch records.

    Broken records...

  • @pgh45rpms
    @pgh45rpms4 ай бұрын

    Please avoid placing your fingertips on the grooved playing surfaces of the record. It creates oil and grime on the record surface, affecting the sound quality. Handle by the edges with just your palms. To play a record, your longest finger should be at the spindle hole, with your palm at the edge. Most 78's are made of shellac and are very fragile. The least bump, jar or fumble results with a chipped, cracked or broken record.
