In this video, we're going to talk about how to handle a pain flare-up. Pain is unavoidable in our everyday lives, but it can be really tough when it feels like everything is going wrong.
Instead of letting pain control you, learn how to handle a chronic pain flare-up in a healthy and manageable way. Inform your doctor if the pain gets too severe, and remember that you're not alone in your chronic pain journey. Pain is a part of life, and you can survive it by learning how to handle it properly. In this video Dr. Furlan explains 5 thoughts that usually pass through the mind of people with chronic pain during an flare-up episode.
Dr. Furlan is a pain specialist in Toronto Canada. She is a physiatrist (specialist in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation). She holds a medical degree from the University of Sao Paulo and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto. She has 30 years of experience helping people with chronic pain to get better quality of life.

This is really good topic to talk about and to hear, because when intense pain comes, fear overwhelms you, especially those of us who live alone and have to take care of ourselves alone. This is what happened to me recently with my back, it was a deep one which I had not that intense of pain that way for three years. I always have pain every day with my back condition, but this one was big, and I just rolled with the pain doing what I could do slowly for three days, then by the 5th day, I was able to walk better without the spasms. I tried to remind myself that this could pass too just as other times before, but there is that fear in the back of your mind always wondering, is this going to be the big one that takes me to the hospital? I signed up for a service which delivers food from two grocery stores for one year, so that I will not be in fear of not being able to get my needs met. Now I feel better knowing I have insurance and support by oredering my food, pet supplies, ect. from my two local stores and they will deliver to me. I was so relieved to come through the fog into the light again, with proof that God is healing me all along, we just have to be very patient and try to be very calm through these flareups and accept that you have to stay home for awhile and make your best of your time when you are home bound. Cheers, and thank you, for your great channel!

Hi Dr Furlan. In this video I could identify with several mindsets that you discussed. I do suffer in silence a lot. Some people don't want to know. Some people are very empathetic. It can be quite wearing at times.......yet another flare-up. I appreciate your empathy and advice on how better to deal with a flare-up. I will download the list you have prepared. I think it will help me cope with a flare up. I appreciate all the help I have received from you. Thanks 🙏

Your train of thoughts is like you're right inside my head! Particularly the last 2. I didn't know I was quite that classic. I have Cauda Equina Syndrome with chronic, severe, intractable, neuropathic pain. For 9 years all I have is pain, but the flairs are horrendous😢. Thank you so much for a great video ❤

Loved this. Thank you Dr Furlan! It was like made for me..Yes, all first 3 trains, I jump on , but I am slowly getting to the point that acceptance is probably the best way to go, like you said riding these trains get us nowhere. With this video I will beat it more into my brain. I am inhaling all info you have made here on YT for us. Suffering pain on average 4 times a week, waking up to it , it is a habit I do not want in my life! It messes up my plans for life, I still try to do what I enjoy but I have to work around the "pain schedule". Ice on forehead, Tiger balm, heating pad, medicine and cup of coffee is many times first aid. Yes to better sleeping( I am working on better routine) since I sleep only 4 hours average. My personality is for sure more pessimism and catastrophist , my father side was this way all the way, but at least I see it and try not to follow these patterns as much as I can, if I can. Best regards to you! Jana

I was always an optimist with great health and seldom had pain until I woke up at age 54 in excruciating pain that lasted two years. Since then, I've had chronic pain on a lesser level. I fully believe in the mind body connection and accept that it's my responsibility to get off the train. But, that doesn't mean it's easy.

Each flare up is different, no 2 were exactly alike. During that first year I got stuck on that 1st train car often. So I did make many doctor and specialist appts. Tests helped some and reassurances, from Dr. Furlans videos and from my Ortho. Most of my doctors and other specialists didn't know about CRPS ,I was their first patient with it. I also had to come to see the patterns, and subtle differences by journaling everything! I am trying many elimination diets now and learning which foods cause some problems and which can't be combined. Or maybe going to an all liquid diet during weather pressure changes or during seasons using fireworks, because those trigger my flares too. Eventually though I learned what I could do instead of focusing on what I couldn't do. Maybe I had to give up food or certain drinks or certain activities , but I could replace the those with other options. Life ebbs and flows with or without chronic pain, so I had to see the similarities in that from my former life to this "new" life. My pain is not controlled, my flares still happen, but I have options and alternatives . I learn to find other things to enjoy privately in my down time, and my husband helps me most during those times too=)

To me, it's enough to smell a perfume or other petrochemical, stay top much time on a cell phone, smell other chemicals or eat grains, nightshade plants, dairy or other harmful substances like refined sugar, flavours and other toxic additives to "food" or smell coffee! Everyone has different triggers but diet and the environment are key to healing! And a holistic dentist!!!!

I am facing plantar fasciitis and acute metatarsalgia for 4 years now. Steroid shot and PRP didn't help me but taking a very small dose of a muscle relaxant everyday is making me go through the day easily. Without that i am not able to do any household chores. This medicine makes me feel confident and happy. Can it have any worrisome side effects if i continue taking it for a long time? I am 43 (female)
