About six miles from Maastricht, in the Netherlands, lie buried 8,301 American soldiers who died in "Operation Market Garden" in the battles to liberate Holland in the fall/winter of 1944. Every one of the men buried in the cemetery, as well as those in the Canadian and British military cemeteries, has been adopted by a Dutch family who mind the grave, decorate it, and keep alive the memory of the soldier they have adopted. It is even the custom to keep a portrait of "their" soldier in a place of honor in their home. Annually, on "Liberation Day," memorial services are held for "the men who died to liberate Holland." The day concludes with a concert. The final piece is always "Il Silenzio,” (The Silence) a memorial piece commissioned by the Dutch and first played in 1965 on the 20th anniversary of Holland's liberation. It has been the concluding piece of the memorial concert ever since. This year the soloist was a 13-year-old Dutch girl, Melissa Venema, backed by André Rieu and his orchestra (the Royal Orchestra of the Netherlands). This beautiful concert piece is based upon the original version of taps and was composed by Italian composer Nino Rossi.

April 5th 2009 at 10:30pm my Dad passed away from cancer. We had come home after saying our goodbyes to him, and my Mom got on her PC to start the process of emailing family that he had passed away. As she checked her emails, someone had sent a link to this performance. It was as if the Lord new as a family we needed to hear this. We stood around the monitor and listen quietly. This is an absolutely divine performance by this young Lady…..l don’t have the words to respond to hearing heaven on Earth, the way l would like to for the first time . Just blew me away.
This young lady is talented beyond words this is so beautiful and haunting tears are streaming down my face listening to this it is just so very moving it stirs the soul
Beautiful. It is wonderful that André gives such a opportunity for many talents.
An absolutely stunning performance… My words will make me sound a fool but the men I’ve served with, and died next to me, are smiling. Thank you so very much! I’ll keep on going a little longer now… thanks to you. ❤️
An angel with perfect control of her instrument and self, breathing, cheeks, diaphragm . Perfect, and watching the master's guidance. Thankyou Andre' for giving these much deserved younger musicians their chance they deserve and have earned. Off grid in Oklahoma Mt.Momma

Questo è il Silenzio militare italiano .....solo pochi possono percepire le emozioni che dà.. ...Semper Fidelis.....
Wow... It is so hard to play notes THAT clear on a trumpet. Well played Ms. Venema!
MOST touching for those of us who served : thanks a million for the reminder. Bob

Thank you for your service. 🇺🇲
An incredibly beautiful girl plays with the heavenly sound of a trumpet. In a few seconds I felt tears in my eyes. I have never heard anything so extraterrestrial. This performance, exactly from Melissa , I will wish to accompany me on my last journey ...
She is definitely an angel with tremendous talent. Dynamite job!!
Such intonation and phrasing. She honors all those boys , mostly poor, and girls now, sadly, who sacrifice with honor in needless war.
That is one child I would never complain about her practicing at home ,absolutely flawless performance
