I teach basic whittling and carving class to adults and kids. Two years ago I started buying Beavercraft knivesfor my students to use. I was skeptical at first, but these knives have proved to be perfect for our purposes. One advantage of these is, at $12 each, I can add that price to the cost of taking the class and each student gets to take the knife home. No one yet has complained about the knives failing them.

Good to know, thanks !
Great review, thanks for doing this! I'm a total beginner, just started a few months ago. I actually have this knife and love it as well. Of course, it's my first carving knife so what do I know LOL. I got the knife in their spoon carving kit, along with the hook knife and a sloyd knife. My first spoon was a fail, but following you and Doug Linker I've done a few wood spirit/faces similar to what you did in this video using only the detail knife. I'm hooked on carving now!

I started carving over 2 years ago and this is the knife I learned with. I agree with all you say about it! You really can't go wrong with this extremely affordable knife. I have spent up to $50 on a single knife and I have to say, it wasn't worth it. I STILL use my beavercraft knife to this day. It's a great value. Love it!

Thanks for doing this review. I have the beaver craft kit that comes with three knives, strop, compound, in a leather travel case. Such a great kit for the price. And easy to pack.

I may have to pick that up!
Honestly, their customer service is what sold me. They also make other tools like draw knives and hatchets. I ordered a hatchet from them via Amazon, and it showed up with a bit too much surface rust on it for being new new. So I went to their website and messaged them directly, instead of Amazon, mind you this hatchet was $80. They responded within 5 mins of 7am opening time for them in the Ukraine, and were very accommodating. They apologized at the quality of the hatchet and just asked for photos. Once they got them, they sent me a replacement within 3 days and told me to keep the original hatchet and see if I could clean it up and make it usable and appealing again. Outstanding customer service. That will keep me coming back to them. My carving blades have actually been better for me then my Flexcuts which some were double the price. Their own brand basswood blocks also have been great quality.

I’m happy to hear they have great customer service as well! Thanks for your thoughts!
I have a couple beaver craft knives. Handle is a bit small. I have flexcut, Occt and helvie also. All good knives. Lately I reach for the 1 and 3/4 inch Occt the most.

Thanks for the review. I have previously read negative comments about Beavercraft and had been put off buying one, but you have changed my perception of them, so thank you.
I love all of my Beaver Craft tools!
Beavercraft knives are a very good value. AND, their customer service has been outstanding! I highly recommend their products. I have the same knife shown here and it holds its edge as good as any other manufacturers. The handle is ergonomic and fits my large sized, thick hands very well. Give them a try! Cheers!

Of course!
I've only really needed to do a major strop of mine when I whittled Doug's penguin tutorial out of yellow pine.
Looks like a good knife to take camping. Losing it wouldn’t cause too much concern. Thanks for reviewing it for us.

Good point!
Nice review; both thoughtful and helpful. Nice carving project, too. As you suggested, it is easy to customize the Beavercraft handles to fit your needs. (I'm not a big fan of that gibbous handle shape, either, whether it's on a Flex Cut or a Beavercraft knife.) I used a rasp and a file, and then followed up with some sanding, some shellac, and a coat of wax. No big deal, though I do recommend protecting the blade (and your hands) with thick tape before shaping the handle. Thanks! 👍👍

You can buy the blades and make your own handles making them cheaper still , great tools and I laughed on finding the plasters too nice touch .

I am so glad you did this. I’ve been yelling from the interwebs at you about Beavercraft😜🤣😂 Anyone just trying to see if woodcarving is something they’d enjoy can get a “shockingly decent” knower for $12 or less and build a collection without taking out a mortgage. Nobody should buy a Helvie (sp?) for their first knife.

Yes Doc! Thanks for bugging me about it!
This was the first ‘real’ carving knife I bought and it has served me very well. Still use it alongside my Flexcut tools and I like it just as much 🤷🏻♂️

I have a handmade knife with a handle that shape and don’t like it. I prefer the Lyons design. I carve a lot each day and have done so for 30 years and handle shape is very important to me. The blade looks fine.

I just got one mostly to have a knife to compare to as they are popular and has a good reputation for making a good knife and compare to my homemade knives that is my other hobby. I'm trying to do some faces like I saw in your video believe just release yesterday I'm saying I wish builders should over size the handle and like wooden handles for hammers are often trimmed to fit the carpenter's hand for proper fit. Don't think many carvers would have a problem fitting their handles and end up with a improved handle and fit. Thanks and believe your videos going to help me carving for the fun. I got mine $13 including PH but handle to small for me and slippery

@@AlecLaCasseArt thanks for the reply . I’ve only started carving as a hobby for about 18 months . Loving it , learn so much from your videos . Much thanks 👍
As a non carver, how long did it take for you to see that he is not just cutting "randomly" into the piece of wood? I saw it at 5 min, I'm stupid.
I have a larger rough out knife from beaver craft and it came very sharp. My only gripe is the handle is a little narrow and I have smaller hands. Other than that its a great knife.

Sam Skalevik.I agree and if knife builders would over size the handles I believe I would prefer to custom fit my handles are have a true fitting knife. I also fitted every wood handle that are wood as I'm a BlackSmith and most Smiths do think a fitting handle is worth the effort. I'm going build some carving knives for my needs and a few friends and all handles are going to be oversized for 90 percent of hands and advice others to fit all handles.

My hands are large for a woman and I found it perfect. They also can be used right or left handed, which is a must for me since I use whichever hand makes it easier at any given cut. I’m sure a custom handle would be only for one hand or the other, so the neutral shape of the Beavercraft is perfect for me.
