If you can find some sections of any old oversized bandsaw blades the steel is good enough quality to hold an edge well. The tricky part is to properly grind the initial bevels and then to curve them well enough then sharpen the edges and also temper the blades properly. If you can heat till the blade is non magnetic then quench in oil then heat the blades in a toaster oven for a few hours a couple of times you should have a good blade for carving. Just don't forget to cool often when grinding the final edges.

You should forge a large Yarri Kanna next. It is one of my favorite tools. The Yarri Kanna leaves such a nice subtle texture that makes the difference between handmade and machine made. I would make it out of blue steel and wroght iron if you can.

Carving easily often depends on more than one aspect like a sharp tool. The moisture content of the wood makes a hell of a difference. Dry wood is hard to carve but green wood is so much easier.

I have made a small draw knife and some violin pattern carving knifes for carving guitar necks. I used an old circular saw blade (without carbide teeth) that was scrap from a lumber yard (sitting in a bin). It was about 3mm and the most difficult thing for me (no metal shop) was hardening the blades and tempering. IIRC, there are couple of videos that document the setting up his metal shop and the learning of basic blade making techniques. His grinder is a pretty pricey piece and I think the forge is an off the shelf item.

GuitarWithJamie sitting while forging isn’t good for your body. Forging is a lot of stress on your arm and shoulder to begin with. If your sitting you will be a using more. If your standing you can change your body mechanics so you reduce the stress to very little, and let the hammer and gravity do the work, and not your shoulder and arm.

Those forge flames are purple carbon monoxide flames, not nice blue ones. You're in a T-shirt, it looks warm and cosy in your workshop. It's single digit Celcius outside, so how much ventilation have you really got in there? I mention this not to be a safety nanny but because a close friend of ours is now into her third year of rehab, with over a year in hospital from a very nearly fatal carbon monoxide poisoning. The first sign is a headache in the top and front of your head, feels like pressing and then your vision can seem a bit greyed and dulled. Have you felt any of that? There's not very many minutes between that and the dizziness and coma. Take care my friend, you have a good life and live it well.
