120522 SH 249 HEAD ON FATAL CRASH

At about 5:45 pm a 2015 Dodge Larimy pickup driven by Douglas Wooten, 37, of Abilene was traveling south on SH 249. As he crossed FM 1488, for unknown reasons he ran off the left side of the roadway. His truck hit the barrier wires separating the northbound and southbound lanes. The driver then entered the northbound lanes and hit a Nissan Van head-on killing its's 53-year-old driver and his pit bulldog. A GMC Sierra pickup traveling north on the freeway and exiting FM 1488 was also struck on the left front of the truck. That truck driven by Jerry Brake of Magnolia and his female passenger were uninjured. Wooten was transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition. Magnolia firefighters spent just over 30 minutes extracting the victim and his dog from the truck. It is believed the deceased driver was heading for the Ren Fest. SH 249 northbound main lanes were closed until just before 10 pm as Troopers investigated the crash. The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office also assisted in the investigation. The vehicles were removed by Milstead Wreckers.

I have been a first responder for 22 years and let me just say that every second of life is precious. When you walk out the door say I love you because stuff like this happens every day and it’s heartbreaking. Cutting deceased loved ones out of vehicles is awful. Just this morning we responded to a fatal where a semi crashed into the back of an SUV that was stopped in traffic on the highway and killed all 5. I tried to save the baby who still had a heartbeat but lost her on scene waiting for a helicopter. Be so careful, drive defensively and pay attention to those around you, but most of all, love hard and live every day as if it was your last.❤

One moment you're heading to the Renaissance Festival with your dog, and the next yours and your dogs' corpse is being extracted from your vehicle. This is why you NEED to let everyone you love know exactly how much you love them, and to NEVER let politics or ideology or whatever get in between you and the humanity around you. People have much more in common than how they differ. Life is short, freedom has no guarantee of safety and you never know when it'll be your time to exit this mortal realm. They are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They get paid; its a job. Many many people, all of whom are not particularly special.Like trauma doctors and nurses who also see gruesome and horrific injuries.Does not require ANY particular strength of Character; their are lots of bad cops and bad people doing this job just as well as good cops and other good people.Stop writing this silly, unintelligent nonsense and junk. People are not heroes just because they perform a job they are PAID to do.Not every soldier in combat is awarded the Medal of Honor, if you get it.And BTW there are many many jobs far more dangerous than law enforcement. In fact, shooting and killings of cops are at all time lows throughout the country in the past decade. Most cops when they retire say they never drew their weapons, to illustrate what should be, but isn't, obvious to everyone, both smart people and the many simple minded people.Examples of true heroism are very rare, but many dumb people are always ready to cheapen it.

Not only the blood, but the smell of alcohol mixed with the blood along with the fluids from the vehicles. Mix in the smell of the diesel from the rescue vehicles and you are so right, it creates smells that you never forget, then add in the things that you see that are not in this video. 12 years was enough for me. My first wreck (2001) I could hear the brakes and knew I was about to get hit. I just had a severe wreck a month ago. And let me tell you that you might think you have time to react but there's a high chance you won't have but 1 second or might not even know when it happens. I was going 55mph down the highway and everything was just fine then all of a sudden a guy ran a stop sign right at the very last second. I was already about 10 feet Away with no time to react. I slammed by pedal so hard it broke it. But didn't leave any tire marks were I had less than a second to respond. No warning at all. Totaled my car, fractured 4 ribs with deformity, 1 compressed fractured vertebrae with blood marrow edema, and 3 vertebrae with discs that went out, internal bleeding, both knees hit dash even with all air bags going off so damaged them. Seat belt cut through neck and hips causing a massive 7 inch by 2 inch blood clot under my skin on hip. Broke toe and other misc injuries. Seat belt saved my life and I'm lucky I'm not paralyzed. Had no idea what had even happened and have no idea if I blacked out because I don't rem the beginning. So please be careful and never trust other drivers and be prepared for the worst. Even though most of the time you can't react having no time. It did comfort me knowing the friends I lost in severe wrecks probably didn't feel a thing and had no idea what happened. It took about 20 minutes for my shock to pass before I felt anything. Still healing a month later and will take many months.

That is SO true! People just don't take driving very serious. They're always messing with their stereo, phone, make-up & whatever. All it takes is a split second & that could be it. I instilled that into my son regarding driving, reminding him that he's in control of two tons of steel & can easily kill people if he doesn't pay attention, it's no joke. Always be aware of your surroundings, check your mirrors frequently & always be prepared with some plan of a way out in traffic in case something goes wrong. If you're aware there's no car on your right & something happens it's better to know you can just go in that direction without looking because the time it takes to turn & look could very well cost you your life & maybe others. When he was learning I'd be in the car with him & give him a 'pop quiz' on what cars are near him & where they are. He's turned into a very good driver, almost as good as his father. Lol. Sorry about the loss, it's not easy to go through. God Bless everyone & stay alert & safe out on the roads. And if possible, have a merry Christmas.

I drive calmly and cautiously here in Florida while I witness vehicles with "Choose Life" vanity plates weave, speed, and cut off other vehicles with kids in the car. To everyone who will never know the gratitude in our hearts. You never know, you may be standing next to a hero angel in line at the Grocery store. Be kind and forgive. This is the extreme in motor vehicle accidents large heavy 4x4 truck somehow airborne over the cables at highway speed landing square in front of the oncoming small van that is probably half its weight . The van at 70 mph is covering 103 feet per SECOND. Yes that is correct per second at that speed. The truck landing in front of that van on the opposite side at just the 2 /10ths of a second it would be across that lane is the worst possible timing and resulted in a what probably was a 105 mph combined speed accident. It would be interesting to know if the pickup driver survived or died at hospital . No one realizes how small and vulnerable these all vans are. But at that speed and terrible timing ... its really bad. The timing and terrible misfortune on some of these wrecks is amazing when the numbers and measurements are put on paper. If that truck landed at let's say 50 mph and assuming momentum was mostly forward. He was only in the impact zone for 5/10ths of one second . Think about the chances of that occurring out in the middle of an open interstate highway .. I had 30 yrs fire/ems. When we ask how could this happen The crash investigation teams showed us.

I remember driving home on Christmas Day after a night of snow and ice.. Nobody drove the conditions, they zoomed along and passed me. Then we came to a dead stop. No more than three cars ahead of me (once I caught up to them) there was a very bad accident. The ambulances took their sweet time, indicating to me the parties were deceased. They loaded several stretchers and did not rush. I continued on my trip and never exceeded 30 mph on the expressway. A five hour trip took me 11 hours. Merry Christmas.

Send my deepest condolences to those involved! 💓🌸 Last year I was in a head on collision myself, got hit by a wrong way drunk driver. Probably the scariest thing I’ve ever been threw. Thankfully my one second reaction was to cut the steering wheel as hard as I could, and thankfully the drunk driver didn’t cut his wheel in the same direction I did. The drunk driver actually had no reaction and just kept his wheel drinking straight threw. After the impact the drunk driver got out of his car, which was no 1/4 mile down the highway from my car, and ran across opposite side of the highway. Their was a 45 min police manhunt for the driver, they were able to find the driver and brought him back to the scene of the accident, where he then blew a .2BAL, nearly an hour after the initial accident. I later find out he was arrested for a DWI a year prior. It’s so selfish to be drinking and driving, forget about hurting your own dumb ass for doing it but many other innocent people are involved every year by this selfish act. This day and age there’s absolutely no reason to be drunk driving with all the transportation their is out there. A year later I still haven’t returned to work.

Sending healing prayers 🙏 ❤️ for you 🙏 ❤️....I'm sure you're STILL dealing with the trauma mentally & physically from what you went through!!!! I was in a head-on collision when I was 19 years old, the other driver was 18 years old out driving his daddy's brand new convertible & paying MORE attention to the radio than the road, drifted over into my lane & I couldn't figure out what he was doing!!! Luckily, I slowed down, thinking he was going to turn into a business on my side of the road, BUT then before I knew it, BAM it was too late & I was hit head on!!!! This was in 1989 before seat belt laws & I was in my mother's vehicle, which her seat belt was broken anyway, so I had no seat belt on & just had to brace myself for impact!!! The ambulance paramedics said I was VERY LUCKY that I had NOT gone through the windshield & was lying on the hood of the car when they got there!!!! My head hit the windshield in 3 different spots & cracked it in all 3 spots, my face smashed against the steering wheel, among other injuries!!!! So, I know a bit of what you experienced, not exactly, with yours being with a drunk driver & your injuries may have been more extensive than mine!!!! But, I do know being hit head-on is VERY traumatic!!!! I will keep you in my prayers 🙏 ❤️!!!!

I was a full time Fire Fighter for the City I was raised up in.... we responded to many MVA's on Route 1, Route 1-A, Interstate 495, and Route 95 going through our area.... with tons of Mutual Aid calls to other Cities who were super busy or short handed..! Yeah, I saw some pretty gut wrenching stuff, some I'll never forget, it's darn crazy what a vehicle can do to the human body...! My time there was the early 70's... and a lot has changed since then..! EMT/IV-Tech's were a dime a dozen but we saved lots of lives...! Speed & Alcohol were the biggest factors but some were due to mechanical failures, bad road conditions (ice, snow, heavy rains, etc.). We worked rotating shifts so everyone got to see a piece of the action day or night..! Today, I'm in my 70's and as I drive locally to the store and see some idiot doing 100 MPH on a side street..... I just cringe...! Because the tiniest little screw up and a lot of folks could die, very quickly..! I'm sorry about all the losses that people have to suffer with Because some idiot feels he has to drive 100 MPH to go to the store or to get home fast.... he has no consideration for himself or others...! It's not only vehicle drivers it's just as much Motorcycle riders too..! And don't forget the super fast Sports cars like Lamborghini's, Ma rarities, Porches, and the likes.... Many I've seen you couldn't even tell if it ever was a vehicle or not they so mangled up some even in as many as 3 pieces or just cut in half..! My condolences to those lost and for ever rest in peace... =)

My cousin became a paramedic, because once he saw an accident and couldn’t help an injured lady. She passed away. So he vowed to be one.Now he’s the owner of several ambulance services. He told me if I wanted to work with him, but I had to get my paramedic license. I told him, that it wasn’t, much about seeing the horrific scenes, it was about the sadness of seeing a parent, or child dead.I thought about the family. He was mentally strong. At first when he became a paramedic, he saw ugly stuff. When he was trying to resuscitate a person, he lost them, he said he could feel the spirit, of the person, sometimes it felt good, sometimes it felt ugly, like they died in mortal sin. That’s why I tell people to always be ready, because you don’t know your time. You have to be good with God. When he became a supervisor, he was checking, the ambulances, he swore, he saw the rearview mirror move, from the ambulance. He came to me, because I was a devoted Catholic, I’m still am one. I told him Pray for them. Get their name. Light a candle in Church. As a Catholic we believe in purgatory.St. Padre Pio, (He was a priest) and famous stigmatist also.souls appeared to him, God gave them permission to go to padre Pio, to ask for his prayers. If you made it to purgatory, congratulations, your going to heaven. But purgatory is a place of purification, with fires hotter than anything on earth, people could stay there for years or centuries, until you are cleansed of your sins.I haven’t seen my cousin in years. I know he’s good, because of my aunt. Stay safe, drive safe. And say your prayers, before you drive. In Jesus Christ name.

Maybe in your Bible but the best one to learn from is kjv. I will pray for you and people in your religion. If you read the Bible also you will find out we are his saints. Not man made saints. Also pray for your pope since he is starting a universal religion and church. With jews and muslims . These are non believers of Jesus. The physical church should be done being built by 2023. But all in all pray for everyone and not for intercession from mary either. Did Jesus say pray for intercession. No pray to him. You should know the Our Father it came from the Sermon on the mount. Our pick up broke a rear axle while towing a travel trailer on a four lane on Labor Day some years back. Sounded like a bomb went off. We came down on the road very hard while our trailer sheared its pin and tow bar and chains and skidded down the berm. Hitch dug into the berm while skidding and the trailer flipped end over end in the air while coming apart. We had just passed a church van loaded with teenagers. Got back in the slow lane in bumper to bumper traffic when axle broke. No one but our truck and trailer were involved. No injuries. Looking back, it was a miracle. I do believe that our days are numbered and on that Labor Day, it was no one’s time to depart this world. We have state inspections and no inspection would have shown an axle issue. Looked as if a knife had sliced it in half. The break was that smooth. Every time we venture out onto the road, our lives are in the hands of others. Drunk, high, angry, suicidal, inattentive, texting, ill, on medication, arguing, etc: I say my prayers, tell others how much they mean, love my husband, family and fur babies and am aware that driving safely shows my love for strangers out on the highways.

I almost died in a car accident 5 years ago , if I didn’t have my seatbelt on I would’ve been thrown out the car … I broke my nose , I had a seatbelt rash on my right side of my abdomen and a torn muscle in my back . Still till this day I have chronic pains . My side of the car was crushed we flipped across the road and into a field the guy driving who I told to slow down multiple times he was going 85 in a 45 mph back road and over corrected going around a curve . I don’t trust anybody driving me except myself . I learned a huge lesson that night … don’t take anybody for granted . This can happen to anybody .

Story: When I was about 5/6 my mother was driving me to school. My baby sister next to me. Her driving. She blacked out off a meth come down or something, and crashed us head on in to a big cement farm water pipe. Whole front of the car folded. The airbag hole turned my mom's right hand inside out. I hit my head and lost half the blood in my little body. I blacked out, and woke up to a fire man pulling my door off. I remember my mom looking back, I couldn't hear her scream but I saw it. I felt it. I was in shock. Completely numb, and not at all scared. Just high on life. I remember the ambulance ride. The paint on the freeways walls along the Arizona freeway. I remember the children's hospital, and being friends with this kid with cancer. I was there for about 3/4 days. I had gotten 12 stitches, and lost all my hair. Who ever gave me blood. I appreciate you.
