12 Reasons Why "Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!" Doesn't Deserve All the Hate

Scooby series come and Scooby series go.
Some are groundbreaking while others are forgettable.
Some are beloved by many and hated by few.
Others are beloved by few and hated by many.
"Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!" seems to be one of the latter, and it doesn't deserve to be.

It was definitely worse timing since people were still obsessed with Mystery inc. Also the art style didn’t help and for some it looked ugly. People say that they dumbed down Daphne and it was a bad choice, but I would disagree since for once, it ACTUALLY gave her a personality. I liked her more here than I ever did before and recognized her as her own character.

To me, BCSD is honestly the most rewatchable and the funniest the show has ever been. The group dynamic is also the best here for me (even more than MI tbh). I enjoyed the group chemistry here a lot because they all worked off each other really well and each character felt very fleshed out individually. I never get tired rewatching this series, it was such a shame it only ended after 2 seasons. And yes, this Daphne was my favorite too lol, prolly my favorite Fred, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby as well

@@JoeGoesOver Honestly, I’m glad “Be Cool” existed; a massive palette cleanser for how melodramatic and forced the writing is from it’s predecessor. Makes me think of how Ian Flynn does it with Sonic. I like stories to be simple and easy to understand, even in it’s ludicrous decisions (though, not ludicrous enough to be unwatchable/unplayable). I don’t want a dumb love triangle between Shaggy, Velma and Scooby just to attract people who have nothing better to do; I just want the three to be treated like a potential trio of a future family, if people were to do any shipping. Also, it might be me, but I wish Neil Fanning, who voiced Scooby in the theatrical live-action movies, would’ve made for a better replacement for Don Messick (since he sounded more closer in cadence to Don’s Scooby in the beginning of the franchise), next to Matthew Lillard who played equal role character Shaggy since the live-action movies.

Be Cool Scooby Doo is one of my personal favorite Scooby series. I enjoyed the humor since it felt like it had more punch, more bite, more oomph than typical Scooby fare, all while not losing the characters to just “everyone’s a jerk or stupid” humor- the gang still show plenty of moments of friendship and having wholesome moments. It’s easy for pure comedy focused shows to get too deep into the comedy and make it feel mean spirited. But Be Cool Scooby Doo hit a nice balance in my eyes. Like, this is a Scooby series where Scooby is legally ordained to officiate marriage, has an electrical engineering degree, and is very snarky but will also adorably note the gang are best friends with a puppet of Daphne. Fred is somehow an insane, mystery obsessed crackpot AND the straight man at the same time. Daphne’s weekly quirks are just usually one of the best parts of any given episode, though some worked better than others. In general, Shaggy is great and Velma is good with the deadpan humor. Aside from that, for miscellaneous thoughts of my own- What’s wrong with Family Guy is it DID fall into that “stupid and mean spirited” issue I have with pure comedy. Everything was about how raunchy, rude, and awful people were, which isn’t to say it’s the creator, since I kept up with American Dad a while after dropping Family Guy and still enjoyed it- it’s really just I personally stopped enjoying anything from Family Guy. And speaking of, my one last point is how people compare the art style to Family Guy, and I just NEVER got that criticism. Family Guy has spoofed Scooby Doo before, and the two shows’ renditions of the gang look nothing alike. I can’t fault people for finding the show unappealing to look at, since I also had my reservations with the art style from the promo images. I legit thought the animation would be super janky and stilted because I legitimately couldn’t fathom how this iteration of the gang could move in any sort of fluid animated way. But after watching it, I do think it looks better in motion, but I concede that it’s not the best looking Scoob out there. Art, like humor, is subjective. But this was a very nice video just because videos defending something for getting too much hate are always refreshing in the face of constant videos about and discussions on why something sucks, especially for what might be one of the most underrated Scooby series.

I feel like the main reason for the dislike of this show was the artstyle being drastically different with the visible lips, having simplistic eyeballs etc, the truth is Scooby Doo franchise kept the same artstyle for so long that any difference was seen as "Wrong" to the fans. It came out in a time where there were many adult animations with the family guy like artstyle which did not help at all.

To say something nice about all the villains that I remember: Elias Kingston - Introduced one of my favorite Daphne Gags, and had a rather scary villain, with sharp teeth, glowing eyes, and a glowing body Headless spectre - Harkens back to an old concept but a great execution(Puns😂). Glowing head hole was a lovely touch The Chicken Warrior - Fun concept, Actual danger, and a glowing mask that actually made sense Gargoyle - Actually flew, which was impressive, given the stony look to the creature The Crystal crawler - Interesting concept for a bat themed monster without wings Sea creatures - Typical sea monster, Loved that there was two of them, and if you weren’t paying attention, before you see them both on screen at the same time, it looks like it’s only one with some cartoon shenanigans Screama Donna - Glowed, Flew, had a terrifying shriek, great monster Prisoner ghost - Looked like a drowned victim, not to mention was actually scary Sobek - It’s a man with the head of a crocodile, what more could you want? The Yeti - Introduced my other favorite Daphne gag, Was a vicious gorilla like creature that wasn’t Carl the stuntman (F**king Carl the stuntman😂) The Alien - Man, it glowed, climbed walls, it was epic The ghost of baseball player - Intimidating, carried a baseball bat with a metal belt on it, and glowed The AI - Imagine a building run by a ghost, that was the AI experience. Poltergeist style, with a hint of Robotic dystopia The Gremlin - They could have died in a fiery plane crash, Enough said The Wraith - Mainly a watch for the references but still scary, plus the villains made smart decisions The sorcerer - He put in the effort to make his magic real, that screams quality Swamp beast - Honestly, I think it’s saved by the creepy atmosphere, not much else to say The snowman - Now this is an episode I love! The snow man is scary, has actual Ice Spikes on its back, and moves in the snow at incredible speeds! The Pteradactyl - it’s a mother Flipping Dinosaur!! The giant - Gigantic robot disguised to look like a cyclops, hilarious that it couldn’t get wet The scarecrow - The atmosphere is actually spooky, and the monster isn’t too bad either The bridal ghost - Kinda resembles “Mother” from a later episode, so it’s A-okay in my book El Bandito - The skeletal ghost of a murderous thief who wielded twin sabers…Epic Madcap the clown - This was no monster or Ghost, they had an ACTUAL SERIAL KILLER as a Scooby doo villain, and that is both hilarious, and bold Viking ghosts - Strong, Sharp weapons, and they had the typical glowing eyes Mutant monster - Deformed, Radioactive glow, and looked freakishly strong Dorsal foot - Stupid name, scary shark monster, that’s all I have to say Werewolf - Wow…that actually looks like it could kill you The Jester - Best Scooby doo trickery scene, it’s glowing eyes were a key part of the mystery The Vampire - It’s a good take on an otherwise played out monster Hellhound - No scooting around that, they added an actual Hell hound to Scooby doo. Not a monstrous hound, no robo-dogs, a Hound, from HELL Mystery on the disorient express - All creative in there own way, no I am not naming them all The witch - even better take on a played out monster, although I’m not sure how her costume didn’t burst into flames Kaniaku - Crab monster, sharp claws, insectoid facial features, what’s more to say. It smelled like crabs, so that’s a bonus The ghost of Paul revere I think? - Honestly, this one is saved by the comedy just a bit The ghosts of Christmas - Clever way to tell the Christmas carol Space kook - No I will not apologize for just calling them a space kook, I loved this monster so much, and with a harken back to The Aliens franchise, an epic addition to Scooby doo Mother - The “Tsk tsk” noise is forever ingrained in my brain Professor Huh? - Part one The silent star - Wow! A monster who is completely silent? And not cause he has to be like the crawler, but because he is a silent film star?! Epic Evil magic rabbit - Fine enough, clever really, but nothing to write home about Arachne - A good choice for a Greek monster since scooby’s done all the famous ones before Plant monster - Looks like creeping vines, Runs like a dog, Pretty good monster Bane - I’m not even kidding The mystery machine - Epic, maybe a little bit carried by how overpowered the mystery machine actually is in this series Ice man - I like this more than the actual caveman Gorilla - It’s a Gorilla, enough said, and it’s still better the Carl the stuntman (F**king Carl the stuntman😂) Junk monster - Trash-formers…That is all Protein Titan - Not great, but still cool Demon of Salem - Cool enough, and this one actually makes me laugh the most. Professor Huh? - Part 6 3/4😂 - Okay, Joke over. An epic villain for the Scooby gang A half ghost and a Fnaf ripoff - Not as good, still fun

The things I liked about this series was: colour palette and sense of humour. The fact that everyone got to have a recognizable character. But most importantly it knows it's a scooby show and isn't ashamed of it. It celebrates the franchise history and pops references in whenever they can which is very nice. Also scooby dressing in drag feels like a cool tip of the hat to his cartoon ancestors Bugs and Daffy (also it's hysterical hehe)

You know what sucks? I love watching Scooby-Doo with my sister but I can’t get her to watch anything other than Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? and What’s New Scooby Doo! I keep telling her to give it a shot and at least watch one or two episodes of one of the other series, but she says the animation is bad because it’s not the same as either of the two I previously mentioned. I might have to show her this video and the Mystery Inc videos to try to convince her to give it a shot.

Good luck! I had similar problems trying to find stuff to bond with my own kids. Oddly enough, I was able to get my son into video games and my daughter into anime, but in both cases, our taste in the media went in completely opposite directions. So close, but yet so far. At least my daughter and I did manage to share a love for Scooby. In fact, she's the one who kept telling me to do Scooby related stuff when I first started this channel however many years ago. Warning, though, that my 'Mystery Incorporated' video is filled with spoilers. As the series was a decade [ACE DECADE] old at the time I made it, it didn't even occur to me to warning anyone at the beginning like I do now. Thanks for watching and commenting!

As a first impression, the art style certainly did put me off. I didn't hate it for that, I was just kinda not-intersted. I never had any intent to search for Be Cool Scooby-Doo to watch it or anything, but across my collecting of other Scooby-Doo videos, I got 2 episodes as bonuses: the Halloween one where Fred reflects on his childhood and there's the Baba Yaga house again and one in Mexico with a ghostly gunsliger guy. I watched them and thought they were pretty alright. Nothing super but acceptably plain and safe (in terms of broadcasting) But now I'm kinda interested in seeing the rest of the series, especially thinking that it could be a sorta sequel to Mystery Incorporated. As a big Star Wars fan, I know perspective can change everything, I'm not worried about the spoilers you mentioned for Be Cool Scooby-Doo. My memories not great about some of these things and I'll probably forget by the time I get around to watching the whole series.

The wacky, silly, goofy cartoon had bad timing to follow on the heels of something darker, cooler, and more serious and mature, was not what fans who came for What's New, Scooby Doo were expecting or wanting. Not to say TTG is is quality entertainment on this level.

This show suffered what Sonic Heroes and Super Paper Mario suffered, I know it’s a weird comparison but hear me out. When Sonic Heroes was released some people felt that the game was disappointing since the story was simplified compared to SA1 and SA2 (besides the small control issues). When Super Paper Mario was released, people felt that the gameplay was a downgrade compared to the previous Paper Mario games. Years later these two have gotten a lot of praise, and I think it might have to do with the recent disappointing games that came out in the future like Sonic Forces or Paper Mario Sticker Star. Be Cool Scooby Doo suffered a similar fate. When the show made its debut in 2015 many people had issues with the show such as the show being a more of a comedy focused rather than being heavily story driven, and the art style. The show came out two years after Mystery Incorporated ended which many people considered to be the best incarnation of the Scooby Doo brand (which I agree), but they found Be Cool to be a major downgrade from Mystery Incorporated. They also hated the art style that Be Cool had, basically comparing it to shows like Family Guy. Basically people judged the show harshly just by the writing and art style instead giving the series an actual chance. Sure there were a small number of people that gave the show a chance and actually enjoyed it (I’m one of them), but a large number just shrugged the show off as a crappy reboot like TTG or PPG 2016. The show aired on Cartoon Network before getting moved to the Boomerang channel, and was cancelled in 2018 after two seasons. Years later people have decided to give this show a chance five years later after the show was cancelled. They started to realize that the show is not as bad as how they remember and is actually an enjoyable series with comedy to make viewers laugh. They began giving this show praise since the release of Velma and how badly it slaughtered the Scooby Doo brand. Moral of the story: don’t judge a book by its cover.

You bring up some great points, but I still prefer SDMI as my favorite incarnation (and the original series of course since SDMI is so rooted in it). I think it was the designs of the characters that people hated the most. I know some fans weren't crazy about the designs in SDMI but the writing and storytelling helped them get past that. I feel like "Be Cool" was a step back after so much happened in SDMI and I think the current show "Guess Who?" is an even bigger disappointment - seemingly dumbed down storylines rather than a desire to see how much further the gang could have gone. When you include the last several years of DTVs which are nowhere near the caliber of "Zombie Island" or "Witch's Ghost", you just want the gang to step it up, not be dumbed down. I don't know if you know this but TPTB behind SDMI did try for a third season but CN chose not to. If they had, there was a plan in place to have the gang solve a few mysteries on the road but also at Miskatonic University. I can only imagine what that third season could have been like!! Since they were rejected, the ending can be interpreted as the beginning of the original SD (although that doesn't make much sense since they went into those mysteries not knowing who the culprits were while in flashbacks they had solved those cases previously). I don't hate Kate Micucci but she's no Mindy Cohen! I loved SDMI's Velma and hoped to see more of her. Cohen in fact is my second favorite VA for Velma after Nicole Jaffe. I loved snarky Velma!!
