As Mexican-Americans, and retired, my wife and I purchased a condo a 30 minute drive south of Marbella. In a small coastal town of La Duquesa. Our terrace offers beautiful views of the Med. We have Roman ruins from first century, a 17th century fort, and a marina with tons of bars and restaurants. All within 10 minute walk, and to the beach. Being from SoCal, we could never have afforded living like this there. You have no idea how much better the quality of life is in Spain unless you experience it yourself.

I lived 20 years near Alicante Spain 🇪🇸 is a beautiful country with nice people, a relaxed culture and wonderful climate. ❤❤❤❤

There are places to retire in Spain that are not necessary on the beach. If you go more in land you will still enjoy beautiful weather, less crowds and a friendly atmosphere. 😊😊😊

hotter in summer, colder in winter than on the coast

Cadiz may be prone to flooding due to it's low lying level. It may have a rainy season (winter) but it doesn't have monsoons, and it doesn't have hurricanes.

Beautiful cities for sure, but I prefer being just outside the small spa town of Lanjarón, a little way up into the Sierra Nevada, where I grow fruit and nuts and a few vegetables, there are more than 20 things to eat from the garden and the local people are very friendly as soon as they hear you attempting a bit of the language. At 750 metres above sea level the temperatures rarely reach 40c and a breeze often helps cool things down. I´m off grid, but I have plenty of irrigation water, solar electricity and hot water, and everywhere I look the scenery is just absolutely breathtaking. Lunch is sometimes a beer and tapa in town, for two euros, I´ve traded avocados for fresh olive oil in a re-used beer bottle and bought lovely local honey in a jar with no label from a tiny dark shop in town. There are many small shops and a small supermarket. I don´t lock my door at night, or my car in town, and when I dropped my debit card in the street it was swiftly returned. When I first arrived, I visited the dentist, and entering the waiting room everyone said "Good morning" and I immediately felt included and welcome -- it´s that kind of place.

For a real Spanish experience you need to be a bit inland, much cheaper -- though if sea-level rises more than 750 metres I´ll be in real trouble ... What I miss about dear old England is the Indian Take-Aways.

We read your reaction to the video and really liked how you write about Lanjaron, we are now staying in Castell de Ferro and will drive towards Orgiva later this week. Unfortunately we are still completely unfamiliar with this region, maybe you have some nice tips for us? I'm happy to say in my 19 years living here that I have been to all the places in the video, although I didn't stop in Huelva. I live in Antequera but work in Marbella. As a hiking /photographer I travel as far and wide as my hobby takes me. I regularly travel to Nerja which is a fantastic place all year. Malaga City is too much like London for me and I try not to go inside much as its a real hustle and bustle but some fantastic places to visit. Granada is my favourite city and with the mountains it is awesome. Malaga is the most mountainous region in Andalucia so I'm pretty much at home here.

​@@cynthiacopland8634I'm a local, so I can't see from your your perspective, but I find coastal towns in Cádiz great for a clam lifestyle but still lively enough.

I lived in Spain for 2 years working for the US military sealift command visiting all of the coastal ports on a rotating basis and would definitely second the desirability of both Jerez de Frontera next to Gibraltar, as well as Cadiz. Malaga and the neighboring tourist trap of Torremolinos are nice as well. But I especially liked both Cartagena and Palma de Majorca in the Balearic Islands. Cartagena is the Spanish navy’s submarine shipyard and is smaller, less touristy and also cheaper than Malaga. But Malaga has its own song or Malagueña.

No-one ever points out how clean and tidy Spain is. Roads are fantastic too. Surely brits should notice that

Having been to Valencia the last 3 times in Spain (yes it's that good:) thought we'd try Malaga for a change. Stayed in old town & it was great, loads of good restaurants, some good architecture, roman ruins, Alcazaba & beach all in a walkable distance. 31°C in March was an additional treat! Big fan of Seville too, if you don't need a beach a can highly recommend :)

We enjoyed the video, it does inspire people to visit the region more often, than once! I've heard the spirit of the cities is a happy one, with talented, gifted people, and amazing sights with educational grounds instilled on them. Thank you for your hard work and sharing!

As an aside, a small correction: in the first shots of the city of Huelva (#12), it is actually the border town to Portugal called Ayamonte. However, Ayamonte is also located in the province of the same name, Huelva. A very charming town with a lot to offer for a reasonable price. 👍

Our friends moved to a white village north of Fuengirola. The weather is so hot in summer and everywhere is on a steep hill, it can also be very cold in winter. It looks lovely for a holiday, but you have to drive miles to go anywhere, it’s good for a very quiet holiday but not a place I’d choose to live

Andalusia is known for being the birthplace of Flamenco art. Officially, the birthplace of flamenco is Seville - the capital of the southern territories of Spain and one of the most popular tourist centers.

Arriate or any of the white villages around Ronda are gorgeous. Montejaque, Benajoan, Olivera, Zahara de Istan etc

Andalusia has become a popular destination for British retirees, but the changing economic landscape in the UK and the increasing dynamism of Andalusia have made it increasingly unsustainable for them to live there. Consequently, it seems to me that many British retirees should seek more affordable, long-term options in other Mediterranean regions.

You haven't been to Nerja lately I see. LOL. The place is packed to overflowing. Hotels are fully booked, airbnbs, and even private apartments and rooms. You must have never been there at least not in Summer....

I live in Frigiliana just 7km North of Nerja and it's the same here.

Nerja is extremely touristy, famous for its caves.

How about Almunecar? Might be my favourite Spanish town

Seville and most inner Andalusia towns are an oven in summer time. I had been there with 46º Celsius in August, so just beware of that. Torremolinos was built in the 60s and 70s when it was trend to build tall buildings next to each other, nowadays it is considered a terrible place. Old and historical towns are to be visited as a tourist not to live in, just my opinion. So it remains costal towns like Almeria, Tarifa and Huelva, very nice to live for some months not forever, if you don't want to die of boredom. Get a camper or a van and move around.

@babycakes8434 All northern Spain regions - Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque country, Catalonia and Aragon - are the best places to visit in summertime for those people like me who don't like extreme hot weather. There are several towns in this area, but I would recommend the seaside and the mountains. Most beautiful towns in the northern Spain are Bilbao and San Sebastian, in my view.

We have lived in Spain for 9 years in several different areas. Compsred to the UK life is way better in pretty much every way.

Many May find it too hot in Summer, returned yesterday from Seville and the daily temperatures topped 36deg in early October. Lovely city though .

We are from belgium and we bought an apartment in Benahavis.

Unless you speak Spanish there is no point that even considering all the different places he suggested except for Malaga and especially Marbella where English is practically the first language. In Marbella there are over 150 different nationalities registered in the local Town Hall and it's very International. There's always something to do and it's a great place for those who want to socialize and meet interesting people. There are over 40 golf courses within 30 minutes of Marbella and the beaches are fantastic. I'm an American and I've been living here for almost 20 years and my business is selling real estate to international buyers. Feel free to comment and reply if you would like more information. It really is the best place and interestingly it has the best climate on Mainland Europe

Why don't you assimilate and learn their language? It's the problem with Americans, you never wanna assimilate or learn other cultures. I'm from Algeria, Spain is so close to us, and I learned their language by just visiting my neighbors but you instead live there for 20 years and still want to live only where English is spoken. How is the air quality ?

The more the U.S. sinks into fascism, the more attractive Spain is looking. I went to college in Sevilla for a year in the 1970s, and it was glorious. I've returned once in the 1980s, but now my spouse and I are seriously considering relocating to España forever - either Sevilla or the País Vasco (her father was born there). This is a very helpful and enlightening video. Thanks! It merely whets the appetite.

@@freelancelady I used the phrase 'sinks into fascism,' which is not to be construed that the U.S. is a completely fascist state. The current Republican Party here has made it known that it is leaning toward authoritarianism. Just read the papers. I am quite cognizant of the history of Spain, particularly the 20th century, the Spanish Civil War, the emergence of Franco, and the rise of the Right. I have relatives in the Basque Country, and they know all too well the angst that accompanies the rise of totalitarianism. Thanks for the observation. Good luck with the freelancing!

My compliments to you for pronouncing everything correctly. My brain explodes when I hear the bastardization levied on place names by the ignorant. I lived in Andalusia for five years in the late 50's to early 60's and these recent views are pretty shocking. Most of those waterfronts were 1 story fishing villages with no four or five story apartments anywhere.

You mentioned remote workers, unless you already have residency in Spain, there is no remote work visa yet.
