Why people have to go to another country for retirement? Don't they like their own?

Surprisingly the author ranks the Albanian Riviera as number 1. We are retirement age and are here now on holiday. I’m sorry to say that if you are looking for a coastal idyll this area purports to be - it’s already gone. It has suffered terribly from rapacious development and weak regulation which has resulted in the destruction of its scenic beauty and charm. As I write a procession of concrete trucks trundle up and down the road into Dhermi. While housing may cheap food and fuel is not and there are serious limitations the range of foodstuffs on offer in the tiny supermarkets. Road infrastructure is poor and driving (even walking is very dangerous). The culture and practices of local drivers has adapted to poor roads by taking MORE risks. I would seriously consider bypassing this location for retirement. If you are in love with the climate and beauty of the Ionian region, as I am, consider western Greece.

If you are over 65 and plan to retire in Greece you need to consider the distance to big airport to let your children easier visit you, distance to large private clinic / hospital to help health issues recovery, easy access to your house without million ladders and steep slopes, not to be close to forest due to fire risk. May be focus your search on north to avoid killing heat in summer. And be ready to spend 5-9 months to buy a house due to bureaucracy as we did. And be ready to very low quality of houses.

They clearly didn’t research gang violence. Mobile Alabama is full with gangs. Baltimore Maryland is ridden with gangs as is Myrtle Beach South Carolina. It’s a surprise me though and he did not mention Gulf Shores, Alabama, which is safe and so beautiful.

Please make sure you don’t ruin the prices for everyone with excessive tipping and overpaying. Seen enough of that “you deserve a tip” nonsense in Asia, where tipping is not customary but gets brought in by American tourists.

It amazes me that you totally missed Monaco. It is the most expensive country to live in and it is also a tax haven. Plus, it is probably the safest country to live in, in the world. It has a comfortable climate year round. How do you keep failing to mention this country ?

Nicely made video, thank you. I have though, to share my own perception, and that is, that beyond all those charming places and great affordability- why would anyone (who is north American for that matter) choose to retire in a place, charming as it may be, far away from his/her heritage, culture, family... what about language barriers and mastering a new language at an old age (and I know Italian can be tricky, especially the southern dialects, as I speak it relatively well); what about proximity to Medical facilities; what about proximity to major airports, what about cultural events and social activities; and mainly what about residency and the ability to actually legally stay there more than 90 days (tourist Visa to Schengen, all Schengen countries, that is you cant just pop up to another European union country to renew your visa). For me, there are many factors in retirement, some of them are pure technical/legislatives/comfort. And BTW - are those quoted 1,000 Euros monthly expenses includes rent? That means rent there is pretty cheap. I rather just visit these places, instead of the challenges of permanently residing there (and BTW, as a side note, Hotels there are not that cheap, just the hotels will cost more than 1,000/month, much more)
