Hi i’m from Spain and I don’t agree with most of the tips you gave. The timetable was true, we always eat two hours later than the rest of the world. But you also have to understand that Spain years ago was a lot of different and independent countries so there’s a lot of difference between Basque Country and Andalucía or Catalunya and Castilla. Some of the tips you mentioned were pure topics and stereotypes I recommend you to do more research

I'm half Spanish and have lived most of my life in Spain. Some of the points mentioned in the video are true, but some are not. For instance, we do tip, but it is not a 15-20% tip like in the USA. It's usually 1 or 2 euros, and only if you want to. Tapas are usually served for free along with drinks mostly in Southern Spain. If you want a tapa of salchichón, queso, chorizo, anchoas, and so on, in Catalonia or Asturias for example, you have to pay for it. I very often say "Adiós", especially if I think I´m not going to see that person again throughout the day. As for the superstition of sharing your lighter with more than two people a day, I've never heard of it. Mind you, I don't smoke, so I don't really know. Completly agree with you andresmoisesjua. I'm 100% spanish. Here in Spain each region has its own particular lifestyle, traditions and customs. Northern way of life is so different than the Southern, also Mediterrenean Coast is different and it change from north to south. Everywhere there are such amazing as different places, lifestyles and people. McKinley, may be you should named this video 11 things not to do in Barcelona. Anyway, good job and thanks for it. I recommend you to come back and visit other places.

Casual dress in Barcelona more formal in Madrid. Most resturaunts near tourist areas cater to flexible hours. But start get crowded 830 outside in residential areas. Lunch around 2pm. Sunday most places closed, big markets are closed on Sunday. Remember no set hours except tourist areas. Politics okay with friends. Beach wear is okay most places in tourist area except maybe nice restaurants. Dress respectable for church. Some women dress sexy if real hot out in summer but not like USA. I spent 2 months in Spain last summer mostly in Barcelona. People are nice but not phony there.

Some are "true", most are bullshit. Specially the tapas one. In some parts of Spain you'll get a free tapa with a drink, but in most of the big cities you won't. Also tips are expected in restaurants, and saying "adiós" is a million times better than saying "Ciao".

It's "Three on a match" or lighting three cigarettes off of one match or lighter. By the third light, the enemy will see you and shoot your head off. It's not three in a day. It's three on a match.

Barcelona is definitely not the best place to apply the Spanish clichés... if you come as a tourist, you'll get a glimpse of them because unfortunately you will end up in tourist bars, restaurants and shops which try to look exagerately spanish and that is cringy but understandable because when one travels is difficult to avoid those things. I cite a comment i found below which i agree a lot to it (I am from Barcelona): Mikaku: "Let's talk about this: 1. No, on a weekly day we dinner between 20:30 and 22:00h. Nobody eats after 23:00, and obviously nobody have dinner for more than 2 hours. On a weekend, and if there is a social event, maybe. 2. I don't even want to talk about siestas. Sometimes, somebody have a nap on sundays after lunch. The rest of the days we are the same as any other europeans. 3. You can talk politics anywhere you want. The fact that we care about politics and we are passionate does not mean you should avoid them. 4. It is illegal to go barechested for men because you turists have no respect at all. Barcelona is a city near the sea but that does not mean you can go topless inside the city. Nobody does that, only the turists, and we had to make some laws about that. Barcelona may be one of the two most open-minded cities in the world along with Berlin. 5. Tip as much as you want if you found the service was nice. But instead of USA were you are actually paying the salary of the waiter with your tips, here we take care of our waiters. Whatever you tip them is an extra. 6. If you come to Barcelona (or any other city in the world) to watch a bull die in agony for 2 hours, you are just a terrible person. As terrible as any other spaniar who still think that bullfighting is tradition and should be preserved. 7. Say "Adios" whenever and wherever you want. It's common and usual to say adios if you are leaving a place to not come back in the near future. If you are comming back in a bit, "hasta luego" means "see you later". "Adios" will be used 80% on the times. This is bullshit. 8. Thats because we usually serve the correct amount of food, not an extralarge version on whatever you ordered. Even so, if you want to take to your place what is left, ask for it. All restaurants have special plates nowadays and if not they will wrap it for you in some form. 9. Please, forget about tapas. Please, forget they exist when you visit Spain. Don't look for tapas. If you order a beer you get a tapa in some places in Spain, that's all. Sometimes you get peanuts, so do not expect to have luch by ordering a beer. 10. WTF, the only advice that is actually true. Good job. 11. I refuse to comment the last point. So much bullshitery."

Hey Cal, I love the way you edit and also videos, especially ones about Barcelona where I use to live!!! Just a quick note about one of "not to do in Barcelona" where I think is not right saying not to tip people there because ( #5 at the minute 2:49 ) I lived in Spain ( Barcelona mainly ) for many years and I do know LOTS of people working on service industry and tourist. They get very low wages and when they don't get tip it is very frustrating!!! Obviously, they should work for the reward otherwise I don't advise to tip no one nowhere on this planet!!!! Also, there is a lot of travel agency that collects money for arrangements abroad including "tips" but it never arrives for those who have really done the final work!!!

You can tip wherever you go and most of the times it will be very welcome. But it isn't the most common. BTW! Travel agencies can't include tips in their prices since it isn't required at all in Spain. If some agency does, then is cheating you. It's a voluntary option. You decide.

You got so many things wrong!! First of all, if you dine in a restaurant people DO expect a tip, but it is not something compulsory like in other countries. I've never heard about the superstitions, and also about the tapas, be careful as it is the norm in the north of spain but in the south they don't give out tapas with drinks.

Funny enough, when traveling through Spain their trains and coaches were far more punctual than UK's. And two things to be careful in shops, they have queues, but the people don't stand in queue, ask who's last ("ultimo por favor?") and you go after that person, and don't delay the too much at the counter, they may get somewhat angry.

The trains and coaches in practically all of Europe are more punctual ( and considerably more cheaper) than UK's

I can help you with the lighter thing Cal. It goes like this. During the war the third person to get a light from the same lighter would get shot because the shooter could see the light and aim and shoot, usually the third would get it. So it became a custom not to light more than 2 cigarettes at the same time.

I love tapas especially the little tiny fish they just dip them in a light batter whole and deep fry them they really tasty.

Wow! I didn't realize Spain was this awesome.

You don't share a match for three cigarettes. I've never heard it for lighters, but I guess it would apply since matches are rarely used anymore. Also, about the siesta, it's definitively a "thing". Most common ones are 20-30 minutes long between morning and afternoon work, right after lunch. On a weekend... there's no limit :D On tips, it's very common to tip on real restaurants (not fast food ones) if the service and food were good. Tipping on fast food places, bars or clubs is certainly not usual.

Tipping is fully expected in Spain.

La propina se espera, en Madrid al menos.Los madrileños dejamos buenas propinas. en el resto de España la cosa varía, pero es cierto que se deja menos. Yo dejo buenas propinas allá donde vaya. Se espera la propina sobre todo de los extranjeros. A mi me han dejado hasta 100 euros una mesa de dos estadounidenses, y los billetes de 20, para una mesa de dos pax, es mas habitual, lo estandar entre españoles, son los billetes de 5 o 10 (para 2 pax), y la gente de "provincias" (con cariño, soy manchego) suele dejar monedeo la mayoría de las veces. Chao. Chao.

Dios me paso a hostelería ajajajajajajaja, aquí en Bcn no es común... No lo sé si especialmente en hostelería, pero no es común. Probablemente los extranjeros/turistas si que dejen pero porque vendrán de otras culturas.

If you are in Barcelona it's not called "siesta"; It's "vacaina" or "migdiada". Here we speak more catalan than spanish :D . Also, we don't do bullfighting here. It's something more common in Spain. "Adiós" is actually common in spanish, I don't know who might have told you about it not being used often :/ but you can say "hasta luego" or "hasta pronto" as well.

I'm spaniard and this video was very funny, only one thing to say, it's true that here the lunch time it's later than in other countries but this is because in Spain the "time slot" should be more late too, and here a dinner not end until the members get up from his chairs because in Spain a dinner is more for socialize that for eat. One advice, never eat quiet if you are with more people, the others can think that they are no welcome.

Well, fist of all I'm spanish. Thanks for the video, it's cute to try to help people the way you do. Many people had written that all your info is wrong. Not true. Of course there are thousands of considerations and details, as a country we are far more complex and different from place to place. But in general, this 11 things are a good beginning (except for the "tapas" maybe, dont expect too much if any). Allow me to add one more thing, we spaniards drink in a very different way, the main objective is to maintain certain joy without losing control, it's an art that takes years to master and lots of practice (and fails). Enjoy your visit and please, don't go drunk and jump from a balcony trying to pretend something, we are used to it and we are not impressed anymore.

Tipping is not an obligation in Spain, but it IS something we do and that is greatly appreciated, specially with food services. A to-Go box is perfectly fine. "Tapas" is a tipical thing, you WON'T get them everywere tho, since in some places you have "pinchos", for wich you have to pay and wont come for free with a drink. The lighter thing isn't true. In all countries of EU its prohibited to visit churches with "short clothes". A recomendation, if u wanna see the topics of spain, do not go to BCN, u wont see it. Next time go to another place like Andalucia or Madrid, youll see the "siesta" and many other things. And a quick explanation of our timeless (launch and dinner), its normal to launch and dinner late cuz our weather its better than the other EU countries (well the same than portugal, italy or greece). U may research better next time.

Spain is the best. Food is great, people are very chill, very scenic, so much to do there. You need to go to Malaga for the summer festival in August, biggest party ever.

This video is full of omissions. Ex: In Galicia they do not have siesta, you can eat early, they have dinner very early. Do not Generalise when you apply anything in Spain. Peace

The lighter superstition stems from the war. You are almost correct but the superstition is that you should not light 3 cigarettes from a single strike of a lighter or match. In the war in the trenches the sniper would watch at night for a lighter or match to light cigarettes on the first cigarette this would be where they got ready to fire the second cigarette lit would be the aim and on the third they would fire. The superstition is that if there are more than 2 cigarettes needing lit than you should use a new match or relight the lighter after the second cigarette. The salt shaker one I have heard before that is correct.

That lighter one is pretty significant if you're wearing green shoes on a Tuesday, especially if that Tuesday is the first or third Tuesday in a month starting in an A but has more than 30 days then it's customary to change your shoes for sandals or white flat sole sneakers spin in an anti clock wise circle while singing Mary had a little lamb to the tune of row row row your boat but instead of gently down the stream you say briskly home for tea and then you can use your lighter as often as want as long as you keep your green shoes on, in times of war though it would be pretty silly to use a lighter to give your position away.

If you go to a restaurant and you dont finish your food you can ask them to wrap it, and they probably will. We dont use that much those to-go box

About the dress code... I've never seen anyone get fined because of what they were wearing, and ofc you must dress properly in Sagrada Familia, it's a cathedral, you have to dress as in any other church. Also putting footage of Barcelona (Catalonia) in a video about Spain is gonna create a lot of controversy ^^'

One tip that is very important in Spain that you forgot well 2 which are most probably the most important things to remember. In Spain a disco is what everyone knows as a nightclub for dancing in Spain a nightclub is a whorehouse . And the most important thing to remember is that in Spain a clinica and a hospiten are different one is private the other is free as long as you have an ehic card the service is exactly the same as Spain has the best hospital care and service in the world !

Here, if you order a beer or some other drink, as you say, they will always give you a tapa. It usually is some olives or "patatas bravas". Sorry for my english and nice vídeo ;)

The thing of the lighter has it's origen in the Spanish Civil War I think. If you were at the trench with other two and started smoking when you turned on the lighter for the first time a sniper located you, then the second time you turned it on the sniper aimed at you, and then the third time he shoted.

one more tip, DON'T teach people how to live, unless you've been in Spain for yourself. I'm a frequent visitor of the country, even thinking of buying a house there. I got lot's of Spanish friends all over the country and friends who moved there from my country. So none of the above matters or needed to be known at all if you wanna visit Spain.

Good video man. Couple of small points. I would agree slightly with the more relaxed timetable, but would add that the public transport is some of the most punctual and well-run on the continent. Adios is fine, people do say it, but I would agree that hasta luego is the more informal and more prevalent one these days. And the superstitions thing is fun, but not really followed by anyone. I reckon more than half of my generation wouldn't even know about them :) Keep up the good work!

Not really common. The most used is "hasta luego" or simply "chao" like in Italy. "Adios" is ok too but it isn't very used currently. Anyway if you say "Hasta la vista" everybody will understand you.

#12 Don't do a video like this after spending one week just in Barcelona

Not sure about the lighter thing about lighting 3 different cigs in a day, but in both England and Germany it is considered bad luck if you light more than 3 cigarettes from the same flame on a lighter. In other words if you have 3 friends that also smoke then by all means light them up but before lighting you own cigarette turn out the flame then re strike before you light you own. This comes from a superstition in WW2 where a sniper would see the first strike of the lighter use the 2nd lightning of a cigarette to gauge the range and distance of the target then use the 3rd lighting to fire.

I’ve been to Barcelona and I loved it. I’ve also been to the Southern Region of Spain it was OK. However just like most places around they world the sub culture can be different.

#12, just because they speak spanish doesn't mean they Mexican

Tapas are not served in the whole of Spain, certainly not in the north (see the film The Way set in the north of Spain for a clear example). You only get a tapas if you have an alcoholic drink. The quality of tapas has declined over the years, you used be able to get slices of chorizo, grilled sardines, but not anymore. The tapas are served as a matter of course with your alcoholic drinks, it makes you wonder how they make money. I have seen vegetarian foreigners rudely rejecting the tapas and demanding other tapas, they have the chick!! You get crips instead these days, they are playing safe :-(

If they are not free they are not tapas. And yes in Galicia and Asturias they usually call it pinchos but they are esentially the same thing: FREE food that you get with your drink (which btw Alex Smith it doesn't have to be an alcoholic drink)

Si miras los comentarios veras varios Alguno mío) que dejan las cosas claras. Es una superstición que arranca en la primer guerra mundial. Por lo tanto NO es española sin ose +l resto de Europa y de USA. Tal y como la cinta es un delirio, pero en realidad lo que dice es que encender tres cigarrillos con la misma cerilla trae mala suerte, porque localizan al de en medio desde la trinchera enemiga y le disparan. There's a couple of wrong thing in this video, ''adios'' is used MOSTLY when someone is going on a trip or you aren't going to see it for a time, but you can use whatever expresion you like to because in spanish there's A LOT of synonymous and you can pretty much say the same with 4 or 5 different words with almost no diference. Not all the ''Bars'' give you free tapas upon ordering a drink and... WTF not sharing salt or lighter? Even though you can find supersticious people they are very old, don't cut off sharing the lighter or the salt upon your friends or family or even an stranger who may need it. Just to clarify I'm spanish and I hope this is helpful to someone, sorry if I've made gramatical mistakes :p

the third light thing is from ww1 when third light from match usually was enough time for sniper to locate and get head shot

hiii most of the things you said are true! but i have to say i never heard before about the salt shaker and the lighter superstition!😂 also i think in spain we dress pretty formal compared to other countries like america or canada, but it also is very liberal compared some others, so you shouldn’t worry about what you were! just don’t go naked! that is a really good video!💕

the lighter not being shared 3 times is true in the Australian army but it is any flame. It comes from the trenches of WW1 where the cigarette lights from one flame gave a sniper time to take a shot

David Storton you're right that applies to Barcelona though, in the rest of Spain, or many other places at least, tapas are stil usual

With European Summer Time though (GMT+2), eating at 10:00PM means that in fact you'll be eating at 8:00 PM, so at about a classic dinner time

In the Valencian Comunity, people don’t speak catalan, they speak valencian, which is very similar, but not the same. Valencians are very sensitive about this and lately, it’s getting normalized because of the catalan independence conflict and it’s really sad because every time it feels like, in Spain and other countries, Valencian is a dialect of catalan and it’s losing importance. Please be careful and get the most detailed information

Alicia Montes Fernandez I'm Valencian and I agree with what you said. Personally I don't give a shit if Valencian and Catalan are the same language or not but we have been calling the language Valencian since the Middle Ages.

The lighter thing I've never heard of, which doesn't mean you're wrong. Regarding dinner time I reckon you 've exaggerated quite a lot about dinner time lasting some three hours. It is true that we tend to have dinner somewhat late, mostly from 9 to 11, 9 in my case, but these are not that long-lasting. As far as lunch time is concerned, that's another story. These may really last just about an hour, but on family gatherings days, mainly, not on week days. Good job, keep it up...

Well... you may ask for a "to go" if u want, its not so common but thre might not be any problems, and about the lighter.... i have never heard about that!

Good vid, the lighter thing though, not about all day thing, it goes back to army days, and it’s three people, sharing the same lighter at the same time, as one strike, a sniper can see you, second strike, sniper takes aim, third strike of the lighter, sniper fires. What my army mates have said, and learnt. Just my two pence worth.

There’s no problem for you to ask for a to- go box. Even if it’s true that we don’t really use it, I sometimes have asked for it and there was no problem.

Regarding lighting ciggies, beware the lighter policia. They keep track.

I'm sorry to say that some of the information is quite misleading and I feel the need to correct a couple of things: 1. Trains are very on time and you can eat at practically any time in big cities. 2. Siesta is still a part of the culture, specially in weekends and in Summer. 5. Tipping is expected in restaurants, hotels, car valets, etc. Please do tip 😊 8. You can ask for doggy bags. It is quite normal nowadays. I'm spanish and I've never said or heard "chao" to say goodbye. "Adiós" is correct, but we say it when we're not gonna come back soon. I think a good comparison could be Adiós = Goodbye, Hasta luego = See you later. Also, about the lunch/dinner. First of all, we don't take two or three hours to eat, usually takes one hour or less, it depends on the situation. And we don't have dinner at six because we are still working, not because we are very "relaxed", we eat around 9 PM, not 11 PM. And the siesta thing, come on...

This is not mine but It's so fucking accurated, and people need to know this things :) 1. No, on a weekly day we dinner between 20:30 and 22:00h. Nobody eats after 23:00, and obviously nobody have dinner for more than 2 hours. On a weekend, and if there is a social event, maybe. 2. I don't even want to talk about siestas. Sometimes, somebody have a nap on sundays after lunch. The rest of the days we are the same as any other europeans. 3. You can talk politics anywhere you want. The fact that we care about politics and we are passionate does not mean you should avoid them. 4. It is illegal to go barechested for men because you turists have no respect at all. Barcelona is a city near the sea but that does not mean you can go topless inside the city. Nobody does that, only the turists, and we had to make some laws about that. Barcelona may be one of the two most open-minded cities in the world along with Berlin. 5. Tip as much as you want if you found the service was nice. But instead of USA were you are actually paying the salary of the waiter with your tips, here we take care of our waiters. Whatever you tip them is an extra. 6. If you come to Barcelona (or any other city in the world) to watch a bull die in agony for 2 hours, you are just a terrible person. As terrible as any other spaniar who still think that bullfighting is tradition and should be preserved. 7. Say "Adios" whenever and wherever you want. It's common and usual to say adios if you are leaving a place to not come back in the near future. If you are comming back in a bit, "hasta luego" means "see you later". "Adios" will be used 80% on the times. This is bullshit. 8. Thats because we usually serve the correct amount of food, not an extralarge version on whatever you ordered. Even so, if you want to take to your place what is left, ask for it. All restaurants have special plates nowadays and if not they will wrap it for you in some form. 9. Please, forget about tapas. Please, forget they exist when you visit Spain. Don't look for tapas. If you order a beer you get a tapa in some places in Spain, that's all. Sometimes you get peanuts, so do not expect to have luch by ordering a beer. 10. WTF, the only advice that is actually true. Good job. 11. I refuse to comment the last point. So much bullshitery."

About the third superstition, it is not about lighters, but about matches. Because if keep passing them on somebody is going to get burn.

Usually with every drink you get, they will bring out a tapa for those who ordered drinks. If you are in a group, they will bring out a tapa for each person that ordered a drink NOT 3-6 tapas per person haha.
