In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

Best tetris match of all time actually. The most exciting, from the beginning to the end each point was won by a thread, and always with enormous scores. I still can't believe Richy lost the last one, I was thinking "it's the end Joseph has lost", but no. Amazing. I don't watch every monthly tournaments so I don't know every single match, but no match I've ever seen come close to the one in this video, by a large margin. Clearly the best shit ever.

@@kacperzimowski4626 You should stop randomly assuming stuff about people. I was rooting for Huff in this top8 and though I find Joseph very impressive as player, I don't especially prefer him over the other great players. I don't even know why I'm justifying myself to a kid (or a troll) like you. But clearly I think this match here was the most exciting, though the demi-final Huff/Joseph was almost as great too. In the final, I felt like Dog was a little too dominating, so it was a bit less exciting. But that's being very picky, it was still great.

He's nowhere near ready to use that yet, he almost doesn't even need to really to be honest just like Dog there fundamentals speed and etc are essentially maxed out, the problem is thanks to roiling its getting to the point where you can basically play a perfect game get to 1.23 mil every time on level 29 and the roller will always have the advantage.....so catch up games will become more and more a factor. Which is totally fair not complaining even if I dont entirely like that aspect and where its going but its all legit fair and takes supreme skill but it essentially means eventually even Joseph and Dog will likely have to adapt or try and be in the lead by 300 k by level 29 and hope rollers cant surpass them with post kill screen play....this especially unfortunately applies to elites like Koryan and even Nenu who are a 10 out of 10 in there stacking/ iq/fundamentals but there speed even for hyper tappers is really just average to slightly above average at best so they risk being left behind without rolling unfortunately.....but for now its not a huge factor but its already starting to be for sure....Josephs just pure natural skill and amazing stacking for now get him through though, the mans a true great straight up as is Dog!. Meanwhile Richie and Huff and Hydrant and Cheeze here's potential is unknowable however for now Dog and Joseph there stacking is blatantly superior as well as there maxed out hyper tap speed for now and that gets them through without rolling!..for now!...For now!.

I'm on my way to the door, but before let's just put it this way: even in college (already far, far beyond the life complexity levels Dog's or 16 yo Joseph were facing), I literally had time to waste my entire pockets on Dreamcast games and other 6th gen consoles and play them to no end. Life was simple as that. Now at 40, I barelly have time to do the extremely important, extremely urgent, extremely fundamental and actually life dependent tasks. If each day had 48h, it still wouldn't be enough. I haven't powered on my favorite ever console in 3.5 months. Other consoles weren't turned on in 12 months and counting. And I really wanna play them, I just can't find time or energy. Hope this puts it in perspective. Damn. I first started watching competitive tetris back in 2018 and I remember Joseph being so dominant with his tapping - he could pull himself out of what seemed like impossible (at the time) situations, and the elite DAS old guards had to rely on superior tetris rates in the early game to compete. Not even 5 years later tapping is looking slow compared to what the rollers are doing and Joseph is finding himself in the same spot as Jonas was back then. It's absolutely unbelievable.

That second game where Richy gets 1.34m. That's his personal best right there! It's insane because you'd never know it by watching the level of play during this match. He goes into the kill screen and hits 4 tetris's and gets just about 200k in kill screen. Rolling is the future, this game is an instant classic based off how shocking that end game was. This match alone will go down as one of the great matches that heavily influenced the shift of Tetris and how it's played. It's hard not to feel that way after watching this match. Who better than to help showcase it than that of Joseph, one of the real GOATs and paneers of Tetris. What a match, an absolute classic.

I still think Joseph can defeat Huff and is the better player overall, in fact how well Joseph did in CTWC 20921 against an even better version of Huff then last year was really amazing to see, I know for a fact Joseph put in way less overall play/practice even tournament competing time then most of the other say top 30 players did for most of the year 2021 I think he won like January or Februarys CTM dude was clearly depressed about Jonas poor kid but he played great won that CTM then pretty much went into hiatus played few more events at random in 2021 and yet when the main event came he was able to beat all these amazing players tappers rollers and he actually played better then Huff all around Huff was just barely able to beat Joseph by literally pulling out 2 crazy post 29 rolling chase score games ya know. Point is thats how much of a natural Joseph is still. Anyhow Huff deserved the win in the end and Joseph is officially down 0-2 to Huff in CTWC tournament play but I think hel win next time even without rolling whether he can master it or not.But will see.

What an awesome round this was!!! The pandemic and letting these guys play from home is what is making this tourney what it is..IMO So many guys with the talent, but could not make it to the live tourneys. I for one hope that this format is here to stay and those guys who cant travel still get the same chance to win.

Rewatching this game with the context of the others made me realize that these two dudes would be champions any other year. It was a brutally well played game each time. Jonas would be astonished and proud that the game he once knew could be played at such a level consistently.

Joseph is truly amazing the kid is simply a natural......He has probly practiced less then any other elite in 2021 just in general for many reasons ether things in life at this time etc...and yet even still he's such a freakish natural and his stacking is so damn good he can not only keep up with elites who practice 10 times more but beat most still as well! truly amazing a genuine legend the man is!.

44:14 having a parent with friends a generation older than I am, playing track and field, but moreso tecmo super bowl against them as a kid forced me to figure out ways to cut corners since they could outsmart me. Never knew there was an entire community that classified hypertapping and this rolling skill is even crazier (although it's impractical for games like tecmo super bowl, both nes contras, and brawls in nes ice hockey.) Scout did present rolling beautifully.

It was amazing really while heartbreaking for sure I mean Joseph genuinely is a better overall player then even Huff! his stacking is blatantly objectively superior! the literal difference was rolling/post 29 play to Huffs credit there's nothing wrong with that I'm not whining I'm just saying it was quite literally the difference maker and even with that he just barely just barely beat Joseph! thats how great Joseph is and Huff has probly practiced what 20-30 times more then Joseph has this year! thats how much of a natural great and amazing stacker Joseph is and will always be! but yeah the writing is on the wall eventually its simply gonna come down to either the non roller has to be up by as much as possible by level; 29 and hope the roller cant chase them down using there tapping and better stacking fundamentals....or they will have to adapt and learn rolling to....Huff is amazing elite maybe even 3rd best in the world dont get me wrong....but Joseph in way impressed me even more then Huff did this year despite losing just because how amazing he played perfect stacking maxed out hyper tapping speed a total natural, well played chase downs by Huff though for sure!.

@@danielhicks4826 yeah exactly Joseph is most definitely the most naturally gifted dog coming a close second. If Joseph had been with the times and not had the exam and educational pressure and learnt rolling way back along with his stacking knowledge and a lot more time to practice he’d be hitting consistent 1.5s and 1.6s what these now newly formed rollers have pbed on. With Joseph’s micro adjustment and more freedom with rolling 600K possibly 700k 19- transitions would be very doable for him allowing those high scores. If he does learn rolling which I believe he has been and practices he’ll be the first 2 mil score not on PAL.
