I am 70 y/o. One thing I have learned is that humans are more flexible that they realize. I have had several careers not because I wanted to change because I had to. Farm labor, flour mill work, clinical pharmacist, large scale organic farmer were some of the major things I did. I would have loved to farm all my life. But I had a special needs child and I needed health insurance. So I went to pharmacy school for three years when I was 34. I studied seven hours a day and finished near the top of my class. Some classmates called me "geezer." I did pharmacy for a number of years and made good money and had health insurance too! When my son got into college he could get insurance, I returned quit pharmacy and returned to farming. I would not have made all these changes unless I had to do them. And I found I got a lot of satisfaction by learning new things and doing them well. Life is an adventure!

Don't know if someone is reading this, but if you are: it doesn't matter where you are right now on this planet, I wish you a wonderful day and a happy, peaceful life where all your dreams come true. You are amazing and beautiful! I believe in you!

don't know how old YOU are, but that is one of the nicest things I've read on KZread. My own grandmother lived to 106, she also had the same mindset and smiled 24/7--------She believed in a Supreme Being, and she had 6 sisters, two of which lived to 109! I wish she had written a book.

I am in my early 60s and retired at 53. Lots of people gave me pushback because they had difficulty grasping the concept of not working if you don’t have to. I looked at my life as stages. I earned everything I have now through a lot of hard work, but I owe it to myself to “stop and smell the roses” in my final stage of life. In my case I left the country after I retired and live in Latin America. It allowed me to get away from all the negative things happening in America while appreciating my new environment. I have yet to meet anyone who regrets retirement.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement.

This is true. I'm in my mid 40's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than a million dollars by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

I sat and talked to my wife’s grandfather a couple of years ago before he passed at almost 100. I asked him about his experiences in WWII and he was telling me stories in great detail of bombing missions over Germany in B24s like it was yesterday - It was crazy!

My grandma just passed at 104 and she talked about love, angels and eating close to nature. Family and love ❤️ first. She reminds me of my grandma. Great interview. Thank you. 😊

At first I saw that she was an MD and was probably quite wealthy and I thought "Well, of course she has had everything one could ever want and probably never had the pain and rejection I experienced". Then she mentioned her husband wanting a divorce when she was 70 and I immediately connected with her because my husband wanted a divorce when I was 60. Regardless of our education, social class and profession, we are all human and have had the same challenges, pain, rejection and sorrows. That alone is enough reason to have compassion for each other and with compassion, grows love.

I have an engineering degree, am white, and a boomer. Therefore everyone assumes that I'm rich, never had a hard season of lack, and that I owe the world a quick, timely death (nice, huh?) But a gray divorce wiped out my retirement plans, and it's a hellva thing to have to start over at 60. I watched this video hoping this lady could offer some inspiration to go another 40 years, and not just 'endure', but maybe find some joy again. I've started a business, and there's no reason not to believe that life can be fun again. I love my daily walks with my dog, but the divorce changed me and making friends is harder, even when I'm more than willing.

@@shoshanna8475 I can't remember what fun feels like. Everyone is wrapped up in their mate/kids/grandkids. The pandemic helped with that. Young people have to mix due to classes at university. After that, people just seem to stick with their immediate family. Divorce also takes away your 'couple friends'. They all disappear. No one is interested in hanging out or going for a coffee....

I would enjoy having someone to walk or hike with, go to the theatre with, talk over coffee, play Scrabble and board games and just feel connected. Loneliness is real. If I was an artist or musician or had a passion like those, I think Life would be easier. I do have some talents, of course, but art and music seem to really get people involved with Life. Thank you for your comment. It is so true.

@@l.5832 Right? And the last time I tried tennis, it was 'old lady down!" It was hotter than heck out and I'm flapping around on the deck because it burned, but my knees were all twisted up. I realized I better haul my carcass off the deck before the guys in the maintenance building called for help (lol) Hopefully, that at least gave ya a grin... But yeah, all the things I really loved to do have sorta changed as I 've aged. I went rollerskating for my 57th birthday, but I think that was a last time (my coccyx bone agrees), and horseback riding is a little tougher on my knees. I used to like to do all these physical activities (dance, swim, tennis), and I don't drink or smoke anymore, so it was down to the Ladies' Homestead group. But same thing - unless you were married with some form of kids, they didn't embrace me. It's like my 'singleness' might be contagious. And yep, all my supposed couple friends/neighbors disappeared after the divorce. It's okay, for the moment, I'll put all my energy into my business. Maybe in the next decades, like this lady, I can find a tribe again.

This lady's brain is still so sharp...at 103 years old its incredible!! She is truly blessed. ❤ Love to her.

One of the things I notice about her is she doesn't get hung up on grief and loss, and I am sure she has had a lifetime of it. That is a tricky one for people to navigate. Grief ages people tremendously. The pain is practically etched on their faces. Finding the joy in living no matter your circumstances is mandatory in living a happy life. There's no getting around it.

Yes, I agree so much. Living so long definitely had some serious bumps on the road. Like she mentioned divorcing in her 70s! I bet she was wishing to care for another when being old, as people do in marriage, and it was taken from her. And she is still quite happy, that's admirable. And brave.

Grief and loss are held in the body, the nervous system, though. I never held on to the multiple losses and all the grief and anger in my life, cognitively. I lived on in joy. But my body knew, and I became extremely ill and housebound at 49 right in the height of a business that was going very well, a beautiful romantic relationship, one child going into grad school, and the other one in high school. I learned that when there's a lot of trauma and stress in your life, your body will break down and get sick. Even if you cognitively do not realize it. I recovered 70%, and did trauma work, slowed down, (no choice), and enjoyed people for the play, not for work, I did not push myself so much and did more things that I truly enjoy. But then I got sick again because of the shutdown, a part time job I loved lost, activities that kept me healthy were gone, and could get my trauma therapy. So this is what confuses me. Our body holds on to the grief, and traumas, etcetera unless we do so many exercises, inner work, etcetera, to get rid of it. Many of us don't hold on to it cognitively, just like I didn't. With this experience and learning about the nervous system, I think there must be something else to this. My grandmother on my dad's side lived to be 1 month shy of 106. Not 1 of her 6 uncles, aunts, dad, mom, etc) lived anywhere close to that age. Chemicals in Foods now, our push push hectic lifestyle,has a lot to do with it, and lack of community in the last 30-50 years.

Advice: Always be aware of GOD whom we have to be returned.

I was homeless, got into drug's went to prison and then I got to know Jesus and he changed my life...Heaven came through for me in my finances too, getting $36,000 in 2months . I can support God's work and give back to my community. God is absolutely more than enough! Now I have a new identity and a child of God.

@@1Date2Love as i get older and at 74 i can relate to a lot of the things she says i have lost so many good people along life's highway and loss is something if I'm being honest I've never quite come to terms with but this.lady is so wise and really we just have to get on with life make every day an adventure and the following day even more so i am so lucky in that i have good health and there really are millions less fortunate than myself

How wonderful is it that she was born in India because her parents were missionaries travelling and working across Indian villages and the lesson she keeps saying her mother taught her is actually a Hindi phrase "kuch parwah nahi" which means it doesnt matter as rightly translated by her.

Dr. Gladys lives a small home filled with amazing treasures. Plants, old seeds, jams and jellies for the tea she offers her guests. Try the advice she just gave- LET YOUR PROBLEMS GO. Release the doors you locked so tight. Good things will visit you. I know I am One of her old patients, She is my friend, she is my mentor.

A lot of what she says reflects exactly what I learned towards my late 20s. I felt trapped in society and took 2 years off of work to just travel, meet new people, work on myself, read many books, built a community wherever I went, etc. Over time, I learned a lot of what she’s saying right now and I’m completely elated to know I’m on the right path. I’ve always instinctively knew this was the right thing to do, but having someone who lived up to 103 say the same things is a very strong reinforcement for my faith.

Just had this conversation with my older sister. I told her how I intend to teach me kids that they could travel learn about different cultures and that there is absolutely no rush to settle down

I've seen several interviews with her. I'm 57 and do a lot of charity work here in Myanmar that gives my life purpose and brings joy to others. I still work full time as a teacher and I taught myself KZread.

I love this interview. At 103 years old, that woman is sharp and possesses the wisdom gained through maturity. Her '5 L's' lessons in life are truly impactful.

if I close my eyes I feel like I'm listening to a 30something-year old woman. What a lovely soul filled with so much wisdom.

I am 71. What has surprised me is how much easier it is to enjoy life in older age. Often things that caused me sorrow or anxiety no longer upset me, and I have also made tough decisions. I finally came to grips with the reality that some people in my life are bad for me, treating me as a lesser being or treating my dreams with contempt (narcissistic or borderline personality disorder) and distanced myself from them. These are relatives I loved who used me as a psychological punching bag when their lives disappointed them. I stripped much of the complexity from my life to make it richer (less is more). Being a naturally solitary person, I do not interact much with my community, but I do recognize that it has systems that help me enjoy my life. Even in my unhappiest times, I have loved learning. That helped me return to the light.

Those stories are so hard for us to tell. It’s a double edged sword. You can’t tell the good news of it without telling the pain. Overcoming dysfunction and poverty is rarely ever done, and it has left me with the perspective that any difficulties I face I have already overcome so much worse. It leaves you knowing, you shouldn’t even be alive, so anything you have is gravy anything you loose job house, anyone you loose by break up or other, I’m too busy being grateful for the time I had it with them to be sad about loosing it. I want to be a loving person regardless that has always been and continues to be the goal. I cherish life no one is promised tomorrow and I try to be in every conversation as if it could be mine or the other person’s last and I don’t want to be responsible for that person having a bad experience. I learned compassion. It’s grueling hard work and I find peace in knowing the rest of my life it’s self is healing because it’s another day of compassion and gratitude. Thank you so much for seeing us.

@@priskruger314 Yes and the ones that are out there, it’s very painful to revisit. Along with it all, you feel guilty for the ones you left behind. You couldn’t save. When you have reached that point of peace you just want to stay right there. Also for us who have been at the very bottom of society we can relate to most once we are self made, but not many can relate to us. We have had nearly every human experience but most have only known what they have always known. At least this is the feeling we struggle with.

Having stayed in a job I hated and regret, you might want to decide what you’d really love to do and take baby steps in that direction till you can make a change. That’s my recommendation.

I love that you spoke with someone who has so much wisdom, which often comes with age and sometimes painful experiences. Doing something you love, and having a community, are both so very important.
