1000 RAMS ON THIS FARM... and I went to help shear them
The lads at Logie Durno have built up an incredible business over the last several years with the numbers of stock being sold increasing each year.
I went up the road to Logie Durno to give them a hand with their ram shearing!
Thanks to Matthew Seed the contractor for having me up for the day and thanks for the team at Logie Durno for being great hosts.
Hope you enjoy,
Cammy

ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on KZread and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

With how much of a butt kicking that sheep was giving you I'm really impressed there was no injuries to the sheep! Rams wiggling like crazy and no blood in sight! I know you are a great shearer, but it always impresses me!

hi Cammy it's great to see how far you're shearing has come on in the last couple of seasons. every sheep shore to competition standard. David Fagan said many years ago if you are rough in the sheds you will revert back to your shed shearing when you get under pressure in a final. Big Wallace Boyd will tell you there is nothing nicer than looking into a field of well shoren sheep

My dad's people came from Northumberland to Canada and eventually some came to Montana USA. Funny thing we were all in sheep! If you wonder about the statue in front of the Montana state capital, his name was Thomas Meagher, a big-hearted Irishman who shook things up in Montana. Thanks for sharing your sheep shearing.
That is a serious operation on that farm, visited them a few years ago and 3 sound men who are savages to work and the two boys are fond of a bit of craic, the top breeders of charollais in the UK, we have had sheep from them in the last twenty years.

My day’s been made - a new video from Cammy!That one ram was trying to kick the snot out of you! Are rams much more difficult to shear than ewes as a rule?
@w056007568
2 жыл бұрын
In principle yes mainly because they tend to be much heavier and physically stronger than ewes and they can and will fight you to not behave as you would want. It's damned hard work and a real physical struggle!!
@TheSheepGame

Yeah just like Dan says. The weight and strength makes it harder. They often have bit of an alpha male attitude problem too 🤣… so do a lot of shearers right enough🤣

Shearing is one of them professions where humans will surely outlast any machines/robots trying to take over. You guys rock 😎
@nyotauhura7412
2 жыл бұрын
Shearing robots / handling machines research funded by the Australian Woolgrowers association has been in the works since the late 80s. However there were complaints that it was a threat to the livelihood of people who do the shearing now it ends up getting mothballed.
@missymarie2698
2 жыл бұрын
@@nyotauhura7412 I’ve never seen a successful machine tho. Nobody cares about livelihood- if a machine could shear as well as a person, without harm to the livestock, AND being profitable...people would be replaced in a hot minute. There may be machines out there but none that meet that criteria to make it worthwhile.

Textel sheep are so ugly and uncooperative by such great meat sheep! I guess you have to decide what’s important to you. I still like my BFL/LL lambs. To market at 18 weeks at 70kg and locally we’re now getting $6.80/lb live weight. I noticed those boys have tiny scrotums! I think if my sheep had that small equipment I wouldn’t be able to sell to local breeders. Thanks for another good video! Nothing better than to come in from tending sheep all day and watching sheeping in the evening!
Does anyone know if there is a big difference between the normal shear Combes and the elite ones in terms of cutting ease?

If I had to guess, show combs are probably made to be very good for a few sheep at a time, whereas “regular” combs are made to stay decent for as long as possible.
