I know it's about 1,5 minutes at that frame rate. With animation programs you can make a object move from one corner to another with just a couple of clicks. I don't use that technology when I animate digitally, but it makes it faster and easier for people who do.

They moved the images to the side a little bit, took a photo, moved it a little bit more, and so on. It wasn't used nearly as much because you could only see the final result after post-production, but the concept has existed for a very long time :)

The animation industry is still as tough as it was back then. The procedure changed for a lot of things but that doesn't mean everyone will switch to an advanced technique for the sake of doing it. The Anime industry is still using traditional animation for the most of it, they use a lot of pen and paper in their work. CG doesn't make it much easier (it helps animators deal with complicated stuff to draw such as bikes, weapons, cars, etc), is not as easy as pressing a button and letting the computer do the work by itself, there is still a lot of human work involved, and that work is often underrated (and underpayed), without mentioning that they are overworked.

I love the analogy at 9:20 hands are level 5 and eyes are level 10 so you think you're bad. One of the sad things about leveling up is that I see flaws in the art I used to like, pieces that inspired me 2 years ago just look like a collection of flaws now. But, this is why I've focused my time on art, there doesn't seem to be a ceiling--the art can always be better.

Basically what any experienced artist should tell you: Focus on what you're bad at, and if you're hopeless go even more basic than that. The example with the buildings, you draw from reference and if you can't even do that, learn proper perspective, and if you're still hopeless, try tracing until you get a grasp for the shapes and space. It might seem vague, but it's because we're all different and will have a different grasp of concepts that are indirectly influencing our art (spatial awareness, style, form, lighting etcetera). What works for me, might not work for someone else.

  • @seigeengine

    @seigeengine

    6 жыл бұрын

Grinding can actually be detrimental. Practice should be deliberate. If you just do the same shitty drawing over and over, you'll get better... at drawing shit. Focus piece by piece on what you're not happy with, and figure out how to do it better, and focus on the fundamentals. Lines shaky? Practice drawing smooth lines. Can't shade well? Do still life and try to shade as accurately as possible. Bad at perspective? Look into it and practice perspective. Colour confuses you? Practice using colours, mixing colours, blending colours, try to reproduce colours in your work from the real world. Study the basics of how light and shadows behave. 3d rendering software is great for this, since you can easily change composition and lighting and then relatively quickly see a reasonably good representation of how that affects things. Anatomy? Draw the thing you want to get good at over and over. Whether that involves literally understanding every muscle you can see in the body part, or just involves you, say, trying to accurately draw hands in different positions 500 times. You get better by practicing deliberately. Practicing mindlessly won't get you very much progress in comparison. And steal. Steal like your life depends on it. Stealing is how we learn. Nobody is expected to figure things out from scratch, they take the work of their betters and forefigures in the craft and copy it. Trace, imitate, and copy. Don't claim it as your own, but understand that you're shit, and they're not, and if you try to do what they did, you're going to learn a lot about how they do better work than you, and why they do the things they do, not only because it will naturally direct you towards how things are done well, but because it will force you to ask yourself how you can get the results they got, which naturally directs your problem solving in the right direction, whereas lacking that kind of a goal can lead to you wasting a lot of time going astray.

Mikey is a true sensei when it comes in drawing . I can relate on almost everything he said like the eye level , you won't really realize your improvement but when you look back on every drawing you made you'll see the great difference between the two. And yeah when you're making money outta your skill then it's fine but even so there are people who love to improve everyday to be honest I don't have any drawing material except of a cheap mechanical pencil and a regular bondpaper and a sign pen (For inking) that's all I've got But I don't stop honing my drawing skill I've been drawing since elem to 2nd yr highschool then I stopped almost 7 yrs . Lot of things happen but now I'm 23 yrs old and my interest is coming back tho I may not become what I dreamt before like an animator or mangaka because I feel like it is too late and I am self taught when it come to drawing that's why I don't really have a knowledge I just draw what I want to learn ,but now I still keep on drawing I realized that I don't want to lose that skill of mine. That's why even though there's nowhere for me to use my drawing skill I still do it. And this youtube channel helps me alot. That's why thank you very much 🙇‍♂️🙇

Such good advice! That sounds like a good way to get the "million bad drawings" out of your system! Copy paper is cheap, too, so it's less stressful to use. One teacher I had would make us interpret photos of people in the style of other artists, trying our best to make it look like something they would have drawn. The idea was that this would get us in the artist's head more than just copying their work.

In the hobbyist community, there's definitely a taboo to copy others. Cause there have been cases off blatantly stealing pictures of others and lying, that it's ther own. That's what wrong, not for studying. But when looking at professional artist, you regularly see post of master studies, where they intentionally study a painting, as an example delacroix. But it's really important that you remind yourself, to try to get into the thinking of that master you're studying. So that's more similar in the west and east

Basically when studying you're aiming to understand the piece instead of copying. If you can do fine by observation, it's obviously better than tracing, since by tracing you focus too much into the detail instead of the whole. But if you can't even draw the lines correctly then tracing will help you. My 2 cents.

I guess it depends on the culture. I know in classical Arabic the main high art if you like was poetry. A common saying there to paraphrase is,something empty or filled with bad things will produce it's own likeness. So the classical Arab poets would learn the masters and imitate them; see if you can imitate someone great at something then that means you've understood their ways. Meaning now you can create your own originals with the great art as your reference and not mediocrity.

I would say that people really should take up copying not just for understanding but it helps with skill. I remember tracing a character a bunch of times as a kid, until I could draw it on from memory. Then I decided to create my own character one day, and use the character I had memorised as reference only to discover that while my angles weren’t right, since I hadn’t studied that yet, I was able to draw from imagination decently despite that. It really helped me improve in my work. From there I think it’s good to delve into thinking and then go off on your own. But I like the step by step of develop the skill a bit, then understand the theory, then do my own thing.

They have different nude models posing usually for 5 x 1 minutes, 4 x 2 minutes and 1 x 5 minute poses. 1 Croquis Cafe video takes about 20 minutes, and usually i end up filling up 3 to 4 pages with the drawings. Style is the amalgam of all your influences, distilled into a single act of expression and moderated by your own sensibilities. In this case, drawing - but it could be music, acting, cooking, dancing, dressing, walking, talking (anything, really). When Mikey tells you to copy artists you like, for studying purposes, it makes a lot of sense. There is a need to redefine "copying" though (not just replicating), as only by actively consuming, deconstructing - in basic shapes, for instance - and reconstructing what you "copy", is that you effectively accumulate reference and develop taste. The more references you have, the more influences in action, the more unique is the final product. At the beginning, it will all look quite obvious, but give it time and practice and the mix of those influences will turn smoother - the area of influence over which your references act will go from macro to micro. Copying from reality will, ultimately, develop you realism and only that. For one, trace a parallel with composing music: You just listen to one single band, your favorite band A; your first song sounds just like band A, like a more imature version of it. Time passes and you start listening to band B; your compositions sound a lot more like band B now, especially the chorus - it is your present influence, after all -, but band A is an integral part of your taste and it still influences your verses (it is what you liked from them). Your song comes out as a super-contrasting combination of elements from bands A and B. Years and years ahead and you'll have a whole alphabet of bands in action in your brain when coming up not only with a whole song, but with a single guitar riff.

In Japan they have a style called “deformed” and is not the big head and small body we recall in the west, is just a deformation of how a real human is. Japanese people and artist have a special sense and ability for that. Common people can remember one or two character pattern (that character, from that angle) and draw them perfectly, much close to a pro. So remember a pattern from an artist they like and draw it is also similar to draw kanjis to me. Japanese people can draw kanji, wich means remember strokes order, balance and thickness of lines of a very complex ideograms. In the west, artist watch more reality, and need to understand more that in order to accomplish and achieve a reasonable rapresentation of a good scene or a good illustration. So copying another artist is just a copy of the copy (out from another copy etc.), wich means lose the point and the quality.so that’s why i think we have different approach to drawing. Animators are the most complete for me, just because they need to imagine that deformed character not only in 360 degrees, but also how to move it as smooth as possible. Same for figure modeller, called “zoukeshi”, they need to understand parts of the body of that deformed character, put the correct bones, muscles and move them in a real way, without change too much the character style. Look at one piece figure is the perfect example.

Same. New sketchbooks use to be daunting because it seems like so much art to do, but if you genuinely enjoy drawing and especially learning and experimenting, the pages start to fly by fast. At first, I didn't know what I was doing, but the more I learned, the more I saw what exactly I needed to be practicing and what I would like to experiment with. Starting out, even just a drawing a day gets the ball rolling.

I almost always use references. I stray pretty far from them, but they always help, if not at least for inspiration. When I started, I had these huge stories and ideas, but I failed with all of them because I rushed it. I think its better to start with a small reachable idea. something to work on while you better your skills. Wait until your skills match the greatness of your big idea. Maybe start with a 4 panel comic. Do one a day, and by the end of the year, you'll see how much better your art and writing has gotten. 4 Panel comics are way more flexible than manga. If the art style changes or grows over time, its okay. If you experiment with the art style for a day, its okay. If you change the tone of the writing for a day, its okay. You have a lot of wiggle room with 4 panel comics. And if you make one that just sucks, you only used up 1 day instead of months to years on a manga.

Something I have noticed about manga artists, specifically, is that most start out very creative, pushing the format with unique kinds of transitions and effects, but as they go forward the work usually becomes more orthodox, or standard. Maybe this is because it's a job with deadlines and the infatuation with it wears off, or maybe editors just tamp down that kind of experimentation. In any case, I like to hunt down the earliest published work of artists I like because it is so often full of interesting things like that.

Being innovative takes a lot of time. It's not something you can force by grinding more... and most innovations aren't good enough to keep being used. The more you have to grind, the more you're worried about getting the work done than how to do it in a new way.
