10 Ways to Use Index Cards | HopeCopeNope.com

Have I mentioned how much I love index cards? If you've watched any of my other videos, you'll know that's a joke. But seriously, I love them for so many reasons and use them in so many specific ways that I decided to do a quick video about it. I hope you get some new ideas, and I encourage you to share your ideas with me in the comments below. As always, thanks so much for watching!

Absolutely! Cards are physical, they don't run out of battery, lose signal, or risk theft. It doesn't cost $1000 if you drop one. And if you are challenged by distraction or amnesia, they can be placed right at the point of action... Planners are great, but carrying your entire life around on a pound of (expensive) paper doesn't make sense for a lot of people.

Thank you! I just had a comment the other day from someone asking me how I store so many cards. They questioned whether or not their cumbersome. HA! My head would be an absolute mess if I didn't organize with my index cards. I heard it said once that our brains aren't meant to be storage lockers and that we shouldn't use them as such. Well, I'd rather use my card system for storing stuff!

I used index cards to organize the content of the references cited in my doctoral dissertation. Since APA format was required, I included them on the cards as well so they would be accurate when I typed them into the document.

Yes, these little cards offer full flexibility as an organization tool! I use them as routine builder for the last couple years. One card for each new habit etc. Every morning I would go over the stack - and tick off on the back of each card as I complete the habit/task. They served as a daily reminder. Wonderful to know that you found it useful as well.

What a great way to give yourself encouragement each day! I'll have to try that myself. (Currently trying to read more 📚! I should start a little habit tracker/reading log system I can tick off each day after reading.) Thanks for sharing!

I love index cards as well. I also use them as a way of scrapbooking my craft projects, but with the bigger cards. I include notes & tips about the project, a picture (small, printed on regular paper), and swatches of the material I used on the blank back side. Fun to look back at some of my craft & sewing projects.

I use index cards as monthly reminders for those things that are the same each year, so in December I have a list of January birthday cards that I need to purchase or in October a reminder to have sprinklers blown out ( we live in cold country). Then I transfer those reminders to an appropriate day in my day planner to get that done or make the necessary phone call to get it done.

I use index cards (specifically Rocketbook cloud cards; which are reusable index cards that you can scan and store digitally if you want or just erase) as a book mark/annotation tool when I am reading. I use the “blank side” (the Rocketbook cloud cards have a dot grid side and lined side) to write vertically on it and store my thoughts on a book I’m reading. I’ll file them digitally on One Note so I can access my old notes easily. But if I were to use regular ones, I’d probably store them in one of those accordians. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I’ve been looking for other ways to use these index cards. I like the idea of seeing your stack go down as you accomplish things. I might try finding a way to use them to break down bigger goals. And they are fidget friendly lol. I love how they feel when I’m sorting through them. 😊 and they just hold chunks of information, just enough to not get too overwhelmed at the sight of it. I also like the idea of being able to decorate them. I would love to try that sometime if I get my hands on the non reusable ones.

I love index cards to organize my cross stitch projects. Each project has an index card with all the info for each project. I'd never remember any of that. But i have a Hibonichi weeks as my planner. I could never keep all of those cards together in my purse. My Weeks is small and light and fits anywhere.

I just use pretty flat elastic scrap tied into the equivalent of a sturdier rubber band to hold my index cards together in my purse. Cheap and easy! What a great idea for storing all your project info!!!

Why don’t you just use notebooks? I think all the cards would be easy to lose & be so many in # that it’d be disorganized. Where is an accompanying video showing how to use them & your system?

I actually use *both* index cards *and* notebooks. I use them for different tasks. I also tend to use cards over notebooks if I'm having a flare (of psoriatic arthritis) as it's easier to handle a little deck of cards over a notebook or two. And, actually, I share a bit more about how exactly I use the index cards for my writing system in my writing caddy video! But thanks for the ideas! I'll be sure to share more specifics in upcoming videos. 😀

I felt the same @barbwall3678 @shannonmedisky we’d love to see you physically using the cards in the different scenarios you described. A “talking head” is not as easy to comprehend and seeing you do it. And close-ups of the cards too, to see what’s written on it, the filing system at home, what they’re bound with, where it is stored in the go, what happens to them as completed, watch the stack go down as the reward (alternative to ticking checkboxes as the reward) etc etc. we want to see the physical process in action. The information in your video was really helpful. Thanks so much for making the effort.
