This video answers the question: What are the signs of a leader with dark triad traits? What can organizations do to manage dark triad leaders?
The Dark Triad is made up of three traits: Narcissism, Psychopathy, and Machiavellianism
Narcissism is characterized by a strong sense of entitlement and grandiosity, a high need for power, and an arrogant and condescending attitude
Psychopathy: This trait is often viewed as the darkest of the dark triad. It’s characterized by a lack of empathy, guilt, or remorse, recklessness, deceptiveness, fearlessness, and a manipulative interpersonal style.
Machiavellianism is characterized by a cynical view of human nature, a distrust of people, and a calculating and deceitful interpersonal style.

    Whistleblower here twice at great risk to myself .I lost jobs but kept my integrity and know for certain that I cannot be intimidated or bribed. Lost everything to learn that but I'm in school full time recreating my life.

    In addition, though people with extreme dark triad personality features might be rare, I am under the impression that a massively disproportionate number of them are in positions of power.

    My first comment seemingly got lost in the dark of the web... 🙁 Okay, let's go again...! 🙂 Thank you doctor, this video was very helpful to me. It explains to me why "our dark friends" approach me very positively first (with my naive radiance they might think I'm an ideal fascilitator or their agent) and after a while, when they notice that I have very strong moral convictions, just not the conventional ones, everything becomes very hostile between me an them.     Dark triad individuals are entrenched in positions of power. And they will help each other keep it that way out of self-interest. No douchebag in his right mind would encourage "a complaining policy". Even if it serves to dethrone a rival, it would eventually backfire on him and cripple their power. They don't want to give away 1 inch of the power they have over people. So that's a no!

    I’ve noticed some of these dynamics in the workplace before; especially people getting promoted with extremely negative traits and a lack of integrity. I myself have run into dynamics where I would have a problem with the unethical way Something was being done and had no clue rhat this was Machiavellian or even was a thing. But I have had it happen to me before.

    Excellent video...perfectly describes that person in a leadership position who wreaks havoc on everyone beneath them and loves doing so. One of the worst things about these situations is that the higher ups above these people tend to overlook this behavior when they are perceived to be high performers (whether or not they actually are is another story).     When the owner/CEO is a narcissist you are totally screwed. Quit ASAP once you figure out that you're working for one. I worked for one and after 6 months he totally turned on me despite my working 10-12 hour days and accomplishing so much in a short amount of time. I was shocked and stayed with it at the time because I didn't know about narcissism and I was committed to turning the company around. I should have quit right then but stayed another year, enduring abuse from the CEO/Owner. Big mistake.

    I’ve been in the same situation, but stayed for 2+ years. It took me year and a half to figure out what is going on, and what type of person owner and son are. I did not know for the dark triade concept, and never met someone like this before. I agree that one should leave asap, running as fast as possible. This was one of the most excruciating life experiences for me, and I am not recovered yet althought I stoped working 4 months ago. Pure evil, bones and skin, and nothing else is there.

    @@brandons9027 , I left just before the financial crisis in 2007. The company was already barely hanging on so this killed it. I think he had to sell some personal assets to pay off part of his bank loan and part of it he defaulted on. He managed to salvage a small part of the business and continue. He can never quit because he has to feel like a big shot CEO. He used to walk around with a coffee cup that said CEO on it.

    @@milanabdfdfvbdf it took me years to stop being bitter and angry about it. A lot of the anger was at myself for having stayed for as long as I did and having let him treat me the way he did. I felt like a prostitute and after a honeymoon period of about 6 months I hated every day I was there. I did a lot of journaling about it and that helped. I'd like to say I've finally gotten to where I have let it go but part of me is still gleeful that his business mostly failed. And if I ever saw him again I don't know if I could bring myself to talk to him. Part of me thinks it might be interesting to do so out of a curiosity to analyze him. Now knowing what he is, it would be interesting to see how he frames things. But on the other hand, just the sight of him might give me shivers.

    Worked as a janitor for a while in a local town center. A lot of the office workers had issues with the city manager. This was mainly female coworkers from what i saw and i remember hearing it being addressed often in meetings, but nothing came of it. Nothing sexual, but a lot of snide remarks. Used to eat lunch with them, and each Friday a person would bring cake etc. This city manager would target a female intern that was overweight. He would make remarks if she had some, and one time it got so bad that she stopped coming to work on Fridays. Nobody did anything or said anything that would stop this behavior. Since i was just stepping in for another guy in this job, i had nothing holding me back from "humiliating"/talking back to this manager. The silent bystander effect infuriates me and i did the same shit i despise seeing.

    Somebody mentioned this problem is pervasive in government . The 2016 election was a choice between 2 "dark triad characters" in my view. One was more covert the other more overt.

    Ethics and good moral skills should be repeatedly reminded, together with more horizontal spread responsibilities, on which the performances of each individual can be checked and improved. So, again, I totally agree with your analysis and would add to this that it s good personal developments, creativity and personal satisfaction, which creates less depressed or oppressed people. Maybe it s even a cure to that old ceasar's believe that u have to divide to win. I think too many believe this with admiration, so they maybe only want to imitate behaviors like this. By not believing this, maybe some non core dark triad traits may actually quickly drop that part of themselves, that was maybe just coming from that wrong believe. This could be so good for each one of us and for all too. My mini opinion on this.

    It is really encouraging that corporations are becoming educated enough to understand the dangers these individuals represent and calling on psychological expertise to prevent and correct the problems. Maybe in another generation we will have eliminated the liklihood that this sort of leader infiltrates an organization, parasitically feeding on it for his own ends and eventually subverting or destroying it. The world would be so much better.

    Any else that look at narcissism as a super weak personality trait? I think narcissists are the easiest persons to spot and read. Then being able to manipulate them much easier bcs they love attention, so you give it in small doses so they get like a drug, but in a controlled amount Psychopaths in other hand are much harder to manipulate bcs you always need something they need in order to gain their attention. You cannot never ever give the thing they want from you and never ever trust a psychopath wont attack, so never be alone with one Psychopaths are much much harder thought bcs with narcissists all you need is words and they buy into whatever you are selling. They are so high on their own farts that they miss out on obvious cues with psychopaths being so low in consciousness makes them more awake in the moment and can analyze everything you are doing, having much higher chance of not being fooled

    Yep, it needs some balls and authority in the first place to do so. You can't enforce that without authority, and authority seats are already taken by massively douchebags who will certainly view this kind of policy as a threat to his own position. So good luck with that. I live in Brazil, a place ruled by assholes. If you stand up for their abuse or denounce their misdeeds, oh boy...better be ready for retaliation. Because that axe is coming straight for your head and no one is gonna side with you if you don't have power and influence in the first place. So sometimes what we see is actually these social predators committing mutual destruction and engaging in confrontations to determine who has the biggest dick. Like a federal police officer stoping a drunk state officer and trying to arrest him only to be met by a very rude and aggressive entitled behavior that he can't be arrested. "Do you know who I am nigga? I'm motherfucker state police modafucka!" And they both do this pathetic dance to see who comes out on top, but at the same time they don't go all out at each other because they both are armed . Now this scenario with a civilian, totally different. If you show any kind of audacity towards an officer, you will probably be assaulted, have a gun pointed to your face, verbally abused, spanked, possibly killed (if there are no witnesses) and they will just put on their report that you are a dangerous person that tried to resist. No punishment or accountability at all, they will just be on with their routine in no time. Public offices and police in general is very tempting on these dark triad traits, specially in a country with unarmed population. They basically can do whatever they want. Even there are many good hearted, the temptation will be there. Power corrupts the best of men. And some aren't even good-hearted in the first place, so they already join looking for the perks of being an douche and getting away with it.

    Question: How would characterize management's willingness to downrate almost all of the staff as a condition of the managers' having their salaries raised? Believe or not, this is something the OPM required some time ago -- which management readily went along with all the while telling the staff the motive for the downrating was something else (a general raising of standards to a perfectionistic degree for which no credible justification was even offered or explanation of how this would help the staff produce better work). The shift of standards however was used to drive out older employees while protecting management from claims of unlawful discrimination. The new perfectionistic standards were, of course, applied in a subjective way --- giving management a wide berth to force out whomever they chose -- many decades-long employees who had received very good ratings throughout their careers and all of a sudden they supposedly weren't good enough. All the while, the managers salaries were raised. Thank you for any insight you can provide.eeee

    Maybe forcing them, and punishing bad deeds might work. Just like disciplining a naughty child, and ostracising him/her if it doesn't work. Some people are just too dangerous or unfixable, so you should emasculate them. It sets an example and free good people of headaches. Just my view of things. A little bit of douchery is fine, but let it going unchecked can be very destructive to the social fabric of a company, a family, a country, or the whole world...

    There are always ways of wielding "soft power" - even someone who is not a manager still has the ability to speak up and to influence others. It works best if they can be as calm and objective as possible while still being firm that the behavior is not acceptable (just imagine Dr. Grande). It's most effective when this is done early, before things get out of hand! However there is a certain point where the situation becomes irredeemable, and everyone has to decide for themselves when that is, it's not always obvious. If you're going to stay be sure you're one of the ones speaking up -- if you can't do that, it's time to go. Never let yourself become a bystander (or conspirator!); you will lose your self-respect, and that is much, much worse than losing a job.

    Do most narcissists behave at work as they have at home? I was married to one (or at least our marital counselor told me he is a narcissist) for many years and his control/abuse was covert but increased exponentially over the years. I've wondered since I left him how he gets by because I assume he needs a target to help regulate his feelings. He always seemed to do well at work from what I saw except he would manipulate situations so he didn't have to attend meetings and he would insist the company invest in his ideas regarding technology or investments. Living with this kind of person really leaves one confused and obsessed with finding answers to make sense of things.

    Hello dr. Grande. Would you like to do a video about free will. As I understand neuroscience has not been able to determine whether people actually have free will or not. To me the premise of free will, which also could be described as a 'causless cause', seems like magical thinking that has a profound impact on an individual, as well as society as a whole. Perhaps this topic is too philosophical and comprehensive to discuss, but I would very much like to hear what your thoughts are on the possible individual benefits and disadvantages of thinking a person has free will or not and perhaps the effects this proposition has on society: for example, parenting, legal system, the approach to addiction, financial reward system, the cohesion of a community. It sure is a Grande topic!

    @@raymonddeflaviis2306 I mentioned that it perhaps was too philosophical. I don't know the answer to this question, even if I did, I still would be interested to hear his response. The influence of financial motives within the pharmaceutical industry do not invalidate neuroscience in my opinion. P.S. even though it is philosophical, the proposition of free will may have an enormous influence on every aspect of psychology, both individual as societal. So it is a very relevant question I think.

Apart from the fact that the pharmaceutical industry seems to be motivated by financial gain as well as improving mental health, I do have faith in the good intentions of individuals mental health practitioners in general. Psychology as well as psychiatry is and has been evolving over the years as a result of scientific findings and clinical experience. Exactly for that reason I think the topic of free will is important to keep in mind. Allthough I'm not sure what would or should change regarding therapy (and the topics mentioned above) if it turns out free will doesn't exist.

    @@raymonddeflaviis2306 Thomas Szasz has indeed an interesting take on mental health for as far as I can tell from a view KZread video's. I agree with him that it's not a good idea to coerce people to take medicine or to undergo treatment. Where I live (The Netherlands) it's not even possible to coerce people. I also agree that it seems there's a diagnosis for every state of being that can be distinguished and that it's getting worse, this is likely at least partially motivated by economical reasons. I have personal experience with mental health practitioners, I might have been lucky but most of them seemed to be aware of the things Thomas Szasz refers to. Ultimately it depends on individual mental health practitioners I think, perhaps it also depends on the laws and regulations of the country you're living in. Even though a person may desire a different situation than he or she is experiencing and it's the job of a doctor/counselor to guide this person to 'get there', saying a person is ill is always a matter for debate, even when someone has cancer I would say. In essence everybody is a product of nature, who are we to make a judgement.

    ;-) Dr. Grande I am going to let all of the leaders out there with dark triad traits manage themselves by not inviting someone like that to work with me, by not allowing them back into my life, and by never encouraging those traits in anyone whom I am working with and if they continue to express those traits after I point out that I am not comfortable with doing things their way then asking them to leave or limiting my cooperation with them to the bare minimum is best because I am never going to be wise and smart enough to change people who insist on expressing their dark triad traits while having to depend on any income from being associated with one or more people who insist on being like that.

    I have a leader now and I think mostly she does well, but I could make some suggestions :) and i don't see her as "dark" in any way..I was self employed much of my life and I would suggest people with rotten leaders might think about escaping to self employment

    i went to a charter school whose creator/CEO/superintendent fit many of these characteristics. no wonder so much went horribly wrong while she was out winning awards for the "good work" she was doing....

    But does he fulfill the objectives of the mission statement? Whether it’s a new start up or a high end profession, when the individual is highly productive then why would a business choose to release or replace such a person if they’re not destructive and productive? The traits that may lead to such a diagnosis sound quite suitable in professions where morality and legality are distinct by design.

    Girl from the house to get her stuff out and I was wondering what I should do with the final plan for this week and if you have had to move out of town for a while but they never let anyone know she was going to be doing it until then because I was able to go up to my place to see what he was doing with her about how he would cost his children if he said no to me and he didn't want to be there tomorrow night if we were planning on coming up with them on Sunday or that he had to make sure she had a little more time to talk to him and she didn't even bother to tell him about the house and if he was going to go with his friend to the final stages for her to stay there tomorrow night because of a short trip to the family and I could be there tomorrow night because of that he is going to make sure she gets back from her family that she is going to stay with this weekend and we decided to go to the house to get her to go with the final stages for this job and I could be there to take the best of my first one to get my last name on the phone with her about it would have been better for her to go with the offer I had given her but now it's too late

    I'm a psychology student myself and I strive to be in a leader position some day. Turns out I score pretty high in psychopathy and machiavelism, not in narcissism though. Doesn't surprise me much, in the past there were always hints of the dark triad in my behaviour. I guess being reflective on my own behaviour will help to dim my own psychopathy to be a better leader.

    How to have more ethics in business when many (if not most) who ascend to the top of companies of all sizes tend to be Dark Triad personalities.........hmmmmmm. All these companies advertise they have high ethics and desire to serve the public, but how few actually live up to it and aren't just ultimately serving their investors?

    Unfortunately many institutions, including higher education, healthcare, and industry are controlled by individuals who have one or more of the traits of the dark triad. Having been in healthcare and mental health care for more than 50 years I have seen it many, many, many times. These traits combined with analytic intelligence and education are the main assets for success in our society. We live in a declining civilization. The behavior of large institutions, government and corporations and the mundanity of injustices small and large have resulted in a vast number of people here and around the world to distrust government and organizations. This distrust has been exploited by the very people who have the dark triad. They poison the water , then tell all that are sick from it, "someone else poisoned it" and they will purify it.

    I don't normally make negative comments, but... the notion that a person's true traits are portrayed when they have more and more power, is I have to conclude, false. That would be like suggesting a person reaches their ultimate self when they achieve infinite power. I would suggest that each person has a threshold of morality / power balance, after which point adding more power to that person ( in that situation ) brings out characteristics of the dark triad ( and/or other negative traits, like sadism ), and those characteristics are a natural deviation of the human being in situations of excessive power. We can only make so many moral calculations. Different people have different capacities in different situations. And, of course, some natural level of power distribution is a good thing. Not disagreeing with that. An interesting juxtaposition is people with too little responsibility or power. What traits does that bring out !? And in both situations, it seems self evident that good exercise of moral decision making and nurtured moral decision making, makes it easier to keep a moral balance in daily aspects of life, and challenges.

    We are all set up for this job and she is getting sick of her life so he is not going through the final plan of our last game to be my friend in order for us all to use the house to get her to do my part of how I work and have a great time doing it until she gets closer to the house for the team to go on and to generate some more fun than the last time together to be my first one to be able to help her to see her being a part in her being my wife and her being out of work to generate a little bit of money to move out of here since we were all set up for this job
