Great places You've picked up! Our summer cottage is in Fiskars and the village has developed to be a wonderful and lively place to pop into, when in need to see people and take a break from "mökkeily". And for anyone who loves beaches, I would mention Yyteri beach in Pori with nearly 6km of Finlands finest sand.😉

Nice video and I'm so glad that you've mentioned FISKARS and Raseborg, because I live in that area! :) Raseborg is also a medieval fortress btw. In Raseborg there are also cities like Ekenäs (Tammisaari) and Hanko (Hangö). Ekenäs is a bit like Porvoo, because there's also a lot of old and cousy wooden houses in the old town. And there's of course quite a few good cafes and restaurants worth visiting. Both Hanko and Ekenäs are situated near the Baltic sea and the former is famous for its archipelago (which is as beautiful as Turku's archipelago!) and the latter is famous for its many beaches. It's easy to get to both Ekenäs and Hanko by train from Helsinki or Turku.

Lapland is awesome in every season. I strongly recommend visiting northern lapland in summer (snow-free time) too. Go so far up north, there are no more trees and hike to the wilderness. Absolutely stunning.

Punkaharju and Puumala on lake Saimaa district. The whole district of lake SAIMAA with beautiful cities around and in it like Savonlnna.

Savonlinna is a must go to place , it is beautiful place to visit at summer time or winter, mostly at summer 😊

Great list and nice series! My favourite list would have been almost identical. My favourite place is Naantali in the beginning of June. I have never visited Moomin World but next to the entrance to the island there's an old church. Annual classical music festival called Naantali Music Festival is held there in the beginning of June. What a great way to start the summer there (for those who enjoy classical music) and walk along the beautiful coastline to the spa near by after the consert which takes about 15 minutes. Another great place for classical music lovers is Musiikkitalo in Helsinki. I have been to quite many places in Finland and abroad. So far I haven't visited a better concert hall to experience classical music.

My daughter and her family currently live in Türku. Since the pandemic, I cannot visit, of course. But she has FaceTime with me and taken me on walking tours of Türku, including the apartment building and schools her children attend. It has been eye-opening for me.

In Kauppatori, Helsinki theres in ferris wheel a sauna in one of the thingys that are in the ferris wheel, and a bar... that probably tells pretty much about Finns (: And theres so much sauna boats, what is like a big boat wheres sauna and sometimes theres a little pool too. (Sorry for my bad English)

My Big Fat Finnish Portfolio There’s so much to do there. During my finnish course we visited so many cool places in Turku. I think it’s a great place. Have a good rest of your weekend!

Actualy norther lights is possibly see any winter. It´s more about luck than year that defines are you going to see them or not. Also Lapland ain´t only area to see those. I´m from Kokkola and i´ve watched those from my balcony several times. Kokkola is at the same hight as Reykjavik witch is capital of Iceland. Still from here to arctic circle is almost 300 kilometers (almost 200 miles) and better possibility to see nordic lights is in Lapland. Those usualy can see from fall to spring. Fall time it´s cool to see if sun is just going down but ain´t dark jet and auroras apear to sky same time. It truly is beautifull. Best time to see those are still at night. I´am night person and seen those many times becouse i´m up many nights and when i go for a smoke at my balcony i´ve been lucky enough to see those wey more often than regular dudes who live at day rhythm.

@@Coreyclassic We are getting subpar winters in Southern Finland now, too. In fact, the thermal winter of 2019 almost failed to start here - we would still be in the autumn of 2019 if the transition rules are followed strictly had it not been for the cold snap in the end of Feb 2020. As it is, the winter started on Feb 25 and ended on Mar 1.

Thank you Rachel for all the videos! Watching them helps to see mundane things (for a finn) in a special light. :) And btw, have you seen the video about the finnish prime minister by Trevor Noah? :)

Hi...thanks Rachel you made nice video again of my homeland... I've been all those places in your list except Nummirock ...my next plan is travel to Rauma - small town (est. long before Kolumbus found America) in west coast area and it's old town belong to UNESCO heritance. And then car road driving from there to the cosy small towns like Kiuruvesi, Mikkeli and Joensuu, near east border (there I was born). But there is lot of to explore in my home City Helsinki too...one more must do... if covid-19 don't f@ck us next SUMMER, I'll go and enjoy "Hamina Tattoo"...small town Hamina, military town, quite nearby Russia. Military bands from all over the world gives good shows in Old Bastion there... waiting for next Friday... have a nice weekend.. avoid Oregon and California

I live in Finland and a wierd thing i live in the dangeros city in Finland (Jackobstad) and noting hepends here and rhe safest town in Finland is the neareat town here (Larsmo/luoto) and a fun fakt Finland is one off the safest place outsaid but dangerus inside

I love Turku in spring and summer but I'm not sure would I like to live there. Were you on Swedish ferries or Ruisrock? I would definitely recommend Ruissi, Flow and Provinssi out of the festivals, you really need to be into metal to go to Nummirock, otherwise it can be too much for most foreigners 😊

Hahahaa!! I think Turku is not that pop thing in Finland at least in winter time. In summer time it's completely different thing. At summer time I think all coast line cities where they have an archipelago, are REALLY nice places to visit(as you mentioned), example Rauma(next city from Turku to north) or Vaasa(bit more to north) But one thing from Finland what I would like to raise is an archipelago between Turku and Ahvenanmaa (It's actually part of archipelago). That's a magical area! I have been grown up in edge of that area and I need to say that the older I get, the more i miss that. All the good in there other side of world. :)

Definately need to check out Suomenlinna sometime, have been too Helsinki three times in total but never to Suomenlinna Also, I understand this wasn't on your list since you have never been here but Ahvenanmaa/Åland/åland Islands (finnish/swedish/english) is definately a must see place aswell, I might be ab it parial since Im born and raised here, but it really is amazing, similar to the the Turku archipelago but still different Roughly 3500 named islands of all sizes, very unique red granite cliffs that look absolutely stunning during sunrise/sunset, red granite doesnt exist in the same concentration anywhere else in the entire world, which is why all our gravel roads are red and our tarmac turns redish as it gets older There's something for everyone here, lots of interesting history, local craftsmen of all sorts, amazing food, nature, everything! I personally can not see myself ever living anywhere else in the world, but IF I were to move away sometime, It would have to be within no more than one days travel to get back here whenever I want!

Also if you are religious christian there is also this this thing called MNF festival that happens in turku during november.

Having lived in Turku for 27 years and in Porvoo for 20 years, I approve of this video. How lucky am I? Wanna trade places with me? The two of you can stay in this newly-decorated flat while I move in to your newly-decorated camper. Leave the dogs, though, I need the exercise. I’m glad you drew inspiration for your section about Porvoo from my e-mail. Brunberg is a Swedish name and should be pronounced as such. Your second try was better but still way off beam. Anything and everything old in Porvoo is in Swedish. It’s hardly surprising because the town is almost 700 years old but only recently have the Finnish speakers gotten the upper hand. It was in the early 1970s when the Finnish speaking inhabitants outnumbered the Swedish speaking inhabitants for the first time in history. It was at that time when all the road signs were changed so that Finnish came first. My late father’s mother tongue was Swedish. He was of that generation. I’ll have to put my history professor’s hat on for this. There is a large letter C on the coat of arms of Porvoo. It comes from the Latin word of “castrum” or “castellum” meaning “castle”. In the Medieval times, Danes operating in Finland built a wooden fortification on the river that ran through the place. They built it for trading purposes. It hasn’t survived, but they gave the place its name in the process. You see, the Swedish name for Porvoo is Borgå. It’s a compound name even though it doesn’t look it. It consists of two words: namely “Borg” meaning “Castle” and “å” meaning “river”. So, the town had gotten its name, Borgå, meaning Castle River. When the first Finnish speakers started to settle in the town, they had a problem: they couldn’t pronounce its name. It had some very difficult letters like B and G that simply went above and beyond their comprehension and abilities. What to do? Well, as I see it, they had two options. Option One: translate directly from Swedish. If they had gone that route, Porvoo would now be called Linnajoki. Not too bad, is it? However, they chose Option Two: try to say the Swedish name as best you can. That’s what the Finnish speakers did and Borgå always came out as something like Porvoo. No more difficult letters and everybody could say it. The name stuck and the town now had a Finnish name. Fun fact: the junior high I went to here in Porvoo is called Linnajoen yläaste. So even though “Linnajoki” didn’t make it as name for the town, it can still be seen here in this day and age.

You know that the technical university students in Tampere make trips to Turku. They go to the marketplace and jump in the air in unison - they try to sink Turku into the sea. They also drive to the border of Turku bringing shovels, trying to dig a ditch and separate Turku from mainland Finland ;D

Meanwhile, me, a finn, haven't seen most these things, but I did rent a cabin, or cottage if you wish this year, like most years and had a merry good time. And while I may have missed the joys of Turku and the river Aura, I have greatly enjoyed the Aura mustard, as well as the Turku mustard, the pride and glory of finns. And I was privileged enough to be raised on the great shores of Puruvesi, the home of the worlds best vendace, you haven't had vendace until you have had Puruvesi vendace. :)=

Aura Cheese is imo best thing ever came from Turku. However couple of my Helsinki-based friends (I live in Helsinki too) are fans of Turku Ice hockey team TPS. Neither of them have ever lived in Turku or even near. But it is something you adabt in childhood and it stays forever.

@@kristenaijala8925 My great-great-grandfather was Matti Äijälä from Kuru. He lived in the US for many years but eventually returned to Finland. Some of the Aijalas in the US are descendants of his brothers, I believe. 🇫🇮🌍🌎🗽

If you want to go hiking in the wild in Finland you propably have done some research before. So if you visit Helsinki, you have National Park Nuuksio near you, even so close public bus will take you there. In Lapland we have many National parks, let me just name Lemmenjoki, the UKK (named after former president of Finland Urho Kaleva Kekkonen), and Vätsäri. All these three I mentioned are real wild-woods so not for beginners. In national parks as general hunting is prohibited, fishing with rod is allowed but no fishnets or other kind of passive traps. No forest harvesting for commercial use is happening in national parks. You are allowed to lay your tent down and make a camp almost everywhere in these parks. If you want to make a open fire (bonfire as we Finns understand open fire) check the local rules. Usually allowed at least on pre-made places (dunno what nuotioympyrä is in English) in camping sites.

THE WOOD pathway in the fortress makes me think at the one in the fortress of "the Wall" in GOT. pEhaps a source of inspiration ?

I think you covered many things really worth mentioning. And I like Turku. It's definitely one of the most beautiful cities in Finland!❤ Then again, I'm not from Tampere, so perhaps that explains it. 😂😂 Perhaps you could do a second video with more places from the capital Helsinki? And what about the fact that, unlike many Americans seem to believe, Santa Claus doesn't actually live in the North Pole. In reality he lives in Finland in a place called Korvatunturi. 😘🎅 (There's Santa's Village in Lappland, above the Arctic Circle near city of Rovaniemi.) Lumilapio dearest Rachel! You're one of my favorite foreign Finns! 🥰

And the actual Korvatunturi is located so near Finnish-Russian border so you can't visit as a civilian. Rajavyöhyke = border zone. And nothing much to see there, either. We have some 100 or more similar low "tunturies" meaning slightly shaped very old studs of ancient mountains.

For us finns sauna is sacred place,almost like a chucrh.

That was very interesting and educational. I didn't know FISKARS' orange-handled scissors were Finnish!! As a connoisseur of all things useful, yet inexpensive, Fiskars' scissors hold a special place in my heart! :oD That's so amazing how everything there's so freaking OLD - like built around 1,500 AD!! Here in California, most buildings are under FIFTY years old (but there's a few around 130 years old as well). I still think Finns are nuts, though because: 1) That whole "sow-na" thing. EVERYBODY'S got one?? Seems like they'd be a lot of work and expense to maintain! ...and what do you DO in there without a TV or PC?? :oO 2) DARKNESS and COLD. I don't know why this bothers me so much - I never leave the house. Oh, I know! I couldn't GARDEN!! Could I?? Do Finns have gardens?? 3) NO PEANUT BUTTER. I'd DIE!! 4) MUST REMOVE SHOES INDOORS. As Burt Reynold's said to Sally Field in "Smokey and the Bandit": I only take my (shoes) off for one thing..." :oD

@@pasanen3 On the Peanut Butter, I heard (from Finns) it doesn't taste very good for some reason. What can y'all grow in gardens there? Here in California's hot weather and long growing seasons we can grow super sweet tomatoes and watermelon, which I particularly appreciate.

@Nathan Our peanut butters seems to be 99-100% peanut (1% is salt). And I think that they are all imported. I don't know how they differ from US versions. Our summer is quite short so we have to grow things that are ready before winter comes. Tomatos are possible to grow outside too, but you get better results when grown in a greenhouse. Herbs, peas, carrots, lettuce, potatos, differend berries, cucumbers and pumpkins for example can be grown in gardens.

I live in Ekenäs/Tammisaari and an originally from Denmark. Pps mostly speak Swedish here my excuse for not learning Finnish 😬. Finland is indeed a great country.

Excellent list. Turku is great, but Helsinki is better (my home town) ;) If you are gonna make part 2 for must see, you could mention Finnish architecture peaces such as Oodi (central library) and Löyly (public sauna).

Need to say that when mocking city of Turku, most of that is just having fun (Specially in group, where some one is from Turku...It is something like "Roasted" show in TV). Also need to say that Turku is not only city/place to get roasted,every one will have own "Roasted show" on some point, when time and place fits together. Now, when asking more tips where to go and what to do, my tip is Southern Carelia and lake Saimaa(Cities: Lappeenranta,Imatra and Savonlinna)....But go there at summer, winter time is for Lapland. You can travel there also by museum train (At summer time train company have some scheduled departures from city of Lahti or Kouvola). Some do it jokingly, but some do not. Sometimes the hate is real. And it is awkward as someone from Turku to go into a job interview in Helsinki and receive a Turku -joke right after introduction. "ehhe, I guess that's funny, for you".

@@TTK2013 Sure, but don't you think it is a bit too much, when a foreigner goes and says something good about Turku, and then Finnish crowd is like "hööö, don't say that!". At least they should understand that their bias against Turku is not a universal fact, but just a cultural thing. An unhealthy cultural thing I may add.

In Finland, it is also worth visiting Oulu

That has to be checked carefully as European countries keep being placed on and removed from the UK's red list of high risk countries that one has to quarantine upon return. The same in reverse upon arrival in certain countries travelling from the UK. Can be checked on the UK Foreign Office Website for the latest info.

Tony S let me make sure I’m understanding this correctly...even if your country is on the ban list, as long as you quarantine for 2 weeks you will be fine? I would be coming in from the US. All I have to do is quarantine for 2 weeks in U.K.? And from there I can go to where I want in the EU?

@@ManosphereCentral No, individual country's have their own list of country's that require two weeks quarantine or test on arrival from and a repeat test a week later with a seven or ten day initial quarantine. There is no ban on travel to a country on the red list, an advisory of not travelling to unless essential and a two week quarantine on return, so travelling to more than one European country could involve a total of six weeks spent in quarantine or more in different countries depending on the number of countries visited. The lists can change with as little as 24 hours notice. I would not travel to another country until this virus is under control by some more effective means or has died out completely.

In Turku they have a bit of attitude towards people in Helsinki and vice versa. It is pointless I think, but what can you do. People in Turku like to call Helsinki "the temporary capital by the road to St. Petersburg" :)

I quite like Turku. Been there a few times. It's a bit of a ridiculous thing and I can't think of it as totally serious, this opposition to Turku. I think it's more like a joke, and don't think many people actually, when it comes down to it, have anything against Turku. 😊 There are lots of beautiful places in Finland, and this summer, with the Corona crisis preventing international travel, and me losing my job and having to take a little bit cheaper vacation, I've hiked a lot in different parts of Finland, and it's been really nice.
