Yey, good idea to make a serie about this! 😊 I agree with you with the things you mentioned. For me, the shock was opposite when I went to the US for the first time: everything was bigger, distances longer (and most people used own cars instead of public transportation), no recycling, not even bottles (😳) and the food portions in both fast food places and in stores were HUGE (no wonder there are so many overweight people). So Yes, it was a culture shock. On the other hand I saw beautiful nature and well taken care of parks, beautiful beaches and great old architecture there. I also ate some of the best foods there (homecooked by relatives not at McDonalds though😂). 🤗 But I’m with you, I prefer the silence and slow pace that we have here. Less work, more free time. 🙏🏻🤗🌳🍂🍄🌞

That was such a good analysis about Finland. I've never been a very good Finn because i don't meet most of the parameters: i throw food away, love to buy new stuff and never repair the broken ones (sometimes i secretrly hope they would break so i'll get an excuse to buy a new one) etc etc. Perhaps that's the reason i'm perpetually single and most Finns don't like me. You mentioned the slow pace, it sometimes so gets to my nerves 'cos it demonstrates itself as bad customer service. It's been a while since i visited america but one thing i miss & remember is efficient customer service. Man i loved it

@@WildwoodVagabond That's the way it goes for us non-belongers. I read Corey Taylor's book (slipknot fan from the start!!). Taylor wrote that he loves to be an American but he doesn't like other Americans very much. He's logic fits me so very much, i love being a Finn and i love my country, it's nature and history, but i don't like other Finns, usually i get along with foreigners much better. Preferably women...

I've long thought an ideal situation would be to buy a house with a smaller "mother-in-law" house in the back yard. Then, rent out the big house and live in the small one. Such would enable me to enjoy the security, investment, and tax advantage of owning my own home yet without being forced to waste money maintaining a larger home.

There is many kind of people in Finland, as it is in US too. Situations will vary greatly in different parts of country. In my chase like this: 44 year old engineer married to 40 year old nurse, 3 kids, little old house at outskirts of little south-east town. I have rebuilted our house. I like to fix our 30 year old daily driven Volvos and old Jeep too. I like to do metal works as a hobby, so I need to have some tools. I like country music. I ’m also a singer, that is a hobby too. I do recycle, it is smart thing to do. I like nature, sauna, hiking, lakes, driving a motorcycle, summer cottage. I believe in Jesus Christ. My commute to work is about 3 miles, and I will do it by car or motorcycle or bike. There is no bus going there. In the winter I like to do cross country skiing. We like to hike at national parks up north. So what do you think how close I am like average Finn?

I find it fascinating that the first thing you wanted to bring back to the US from Finland was a Finnish garbage can. As a matter of fact, I can clearly visualize the sequence of events. You had to act under the cover of darkness, that is to say at four p.m. Dressed in all black, you make your way to the nearest waste station that has those round Molok bins which are so prevalent in Finland - with only your dog as companion. You pick up a sturdy metal bar from the ground. With the help of the bar and Noel’s teeth you manage to yank out three cans. Next morning, when the devastation is revealed in its hideous entirety, the general public discover three big holes on the ground where there used to be trash cans. They simply cannot fathom who in their right mind is so hell-bent on recycling that they’re prepared to swipe the bins for their own personal use. Meanwhile, you’re already on the airport tarmac rolling your cans. Your can reads METALLI, while Ivy’s says PAPERI and even little Noel is in the thick of it with her can labelled LASI. However, she has recruited a Great Dane from the neighbourhood to do the dirty work for her. As you approach the plane, you meet the flight attendant and inquire whether it would be possible to treat the bins as hand luggage and store them above your head. You need to keep a watchful eye on them after all. You flash your eyelashes like only you can to the attendant, an officious little man - to no avail. The little twerp is adamant and refuses to take your bins onboard. Having exhausted all your feminine wiles and gotten nowhere, you concede and relinquish control of the bins to the attendant. They are put in a meticulous row at the side of the landing strip. The three of you get on the plane. The next day, the airport staff find a couple of new trash cans at the airport but don’t think twice about it. They start using them normally. When the trash collectors notice the new cans, they add them to their route. They have been emptying them diligently at regular intervals ever since. This has been going on for five years now. That’s how I believe the whole thing happened, anyway.

My experience with the Americans and the American culture is that there really isn't a concept of *enough* . You always have to have and pursue for *more* . Also, it doesn't help that accompanied with the want and need for more comes the entitlement: I have the *right* to exploit the rest of the world to have more, more and more. The Finnish dream, at least when I was growing up, was that you had paid for your house/apartment, had a new-ish car that works, had access to a cottage (doesn't necessarily have to be your own), enough money to pay your bills and for food monthly, and a little bit of extra on your account for a rainy day. If you had that, you were set, you were good to go! You didn't need a second home in the Canaries, a yacht, a million in stocks and a trust fund for your kids (you know, because higher education is free). All that was considered extra.

I did enjoy this video, not that I hate your other videos, but do especially enjoy your Finland themed videos. ( go figure ) But I do see the point about classes as I venture in the deep dark depths of the innerwebs where everyone earning below a certain point is stamped a loser while in my reality my friends are from unemployed alcoholics to doctors, and everything in between, myself being an installer, which I guess falls into worker class? No one is making fun of me for being less educated or less successful, they understand why I do what I do. Not sure if this was your point, but it is what I run into on forums. This one does make me feel bad for living in a 64m^2 flat all by myself though, but it was the first flat I could score when moving for work with an inbuilt sauna :)= I also placed my workplace happiness over what I could earned and nearly halved my pay 8 years ago when choosing this job over another one, because I preferred it, I have been called mad, but not by a finn. I think I lost the red thread somewhere along my ramblings but I do hope I am making some sense. I may have missed the point by a mile as well as tbh, as I am not entirely sober. Also I am sorry for the bad english.

Single person in Finland below 18 000 € annual income (gross) / ~1200 € monthly net is calculated to be poor so I would say person needs that much to have a nice life. Although 13,7% of Finns live below that and they’re hanging in there. Averige Joe makes 30 000 gross but it takes 50-60 000 to really start planning the future, much due to progressive taxation. 100 000+ will get your name on papers at Halloween when tax office publishes its annual income info. Not that anyone needs it but it shows big incomes aren’t common, especially outside greater Helsinki area. 1% of Finns are millionaires but only 0,1% multimillionaires. Currently there are 6 billionaires in the country.

Not really relevant, but there is a clay smith in the very very small village I hail from that still uses one of those. I say very very, because small means different thing here compared to some places, I am talking a few hundreds people small, no shops small, village. I mean he still accepts modern cards but he still uses it as a gimmick :)=
