I remember Taris very fondly from KoToR. It was tense exploring the city while trying not to get caught by the troops, joining in on the Dueling Ring as "The Mysterious Stranger" to earn some credits and XP, meeting the great cast throughout. It never once felt tedious to me.

Definitely, the skip peragus mod is basically always installed when I play KotoR 2, but I never skip Taris. The Endar Spire maybe, but without Taris KotoR 1 just doesn't feel complete for me.

Taris was a good way to get started on earning ig money and level up, which you need for your Jedi set up right after. Paragus is just damned long and it makes you invest in skills you will not need the rest of the game... worse still, it's like having to dungeon crawl with your cranky grandmother and shifty neighbour 😒

I remember playing Driver's tutorial when I was younger and boy it almost stopped me from playing the game! Not only was it one of the first driving games I've ever attempted to play but I also didn't understand English by that time (I'm a Spanish native speaker). So what a "Slalom" was was beyond me, and Internet was not an option XD. Agreed. Guild Wars 1 went a similar route, and it really hit different because of it, you were really watching the end of the world play out. Could they have stood to make more of the intro interactions optional so that returning players could zoom through it and get to the meat and potatoes, while new players can take their time exploring and getting to know the world as it (was)? Sure, but the reason for it existing is solid.

People use alternative start because the opening is too much scripted and some mod just make you crash. Thats why you need to use it when you mod your game. But if you play Skyrim for the first time 100% vanilla, this opening in really really good. One of the best I ever seen in a video game. Its short, set the table for the rest of the game, its really immersive And almost act like a benchmark to play the game lol.

So I was a huge fan of Fallout 2, and put waaaay too many hours into it. I still fire it up now and then for nostalgia value. It's interesting that the temple in Arroyo is seen as a "tutorial / opening level" section. XD We never saw it as that back in the day, it was more of a way to test out your character build. So much so, that a high charisma character could just talk his way out of doing the trials entirely, a stealthy character could just sneak past everything, there were secrets and shortcuts and so many ways of approaching (or avoiding) the trials depending on your build, without giving away the surprises in store in the main game like being a tribal with a spear and running into folks with laser weapons and power amour, and going "wtf!?" because you were expecting to come across folks like yourself. (You're pretty much treated like crap by everyone who recognizes you as a "f**king tribal." You weren't ever really "forced" to do the trials, and even if you couldn't get out of it there was a path you could run to the exit without having to engage with much of anything. I always saw it as more of a "is this build going to cope" test. If you couldn't get through the trials with your build, you weren't going to survive a day in the wastes. Also, it was probably the shortest "tutorial" or "intro" section out of everything you've listed here, so it really wasn't nearly as tedious as you're making out. :p And to answer your question: If I recall correctly the tribe you belong to was descended from the original vault from the first game. (Which happened about 80 years prior to the sequel.) They lost their vault technologies (like their GECK and water chips), hence why they reverted back to tribal living. The temple isn't "ancient", the trials were built as a brutal test for the warriors and "Chosen Ones" of the tribe before they went out into the wastelands, which goes back to what I was saying above about it not actually being a tutorial or opening level.

You were chosen to leave to find the GECK, you are a tribal, and you literally just passed the temple of trials--and you are the ancestor of the original vault dweller. FO3, you are James' son. Also from a vault, even though you were born outside it. Your parents were working on project purity. Again, no getting to choose your background here either. FONV, you were a courrier who caused a catastrophe earlier in your travels. you were designated to carry a platinum chip. While there is more freedom here, fact is your backstory, to some extent, IS prewritten. So, as you can see, the same thing can be said of ANY Fallout game. 4 just went a bit more all in on it than the others did, giving you a specific child, a spouse, and a job--and the job thing wasn't even unique to FO4, because New Vegas did that first making the player a courrier. Definitely agree with the KOTOR 2: Sith Lords Peragus mine level being a big slog. In addition you have to tailor your character's skills and powers a certain way in order to not die because you've got nobody to back you up and are limited in how creative you can get. Then when you get a party, you get spoiled and don't that anymore. Then the final level happens and you're solo again and either basically one-shoting the mobs of enemies because you're too OP or you're character is incredibly weak on it's own because you used the wrong combination of skills/class/powers the game didn't want you to use and you get wampa stomped and can't complete the play through. But that has more to do with the fact that it was a shoddy rushed game than the opening sequence. You can't even properly level some of you party members because you get them too late in the game.

I was surprised to see KOTOR on this list, not to mention on the top of the list, I do think KOTOR2's opening is tedious though, but didn't thought it would made no1 either. I think KOTOR's opening/tutorial level is only limited to the Endar Spire space ship part, once your party land on Taris, you can actually explore around the city freely. You can do the main quest, raid some apartments, or go to the arena. To be honest, there's not really that much stuff to do on Taris, and it's true that the rest of the game are not accessible at this point, but there's still some level of freedom, and I think Taris is more like the first chapter of KOTOR. KOTOR2's opening however, is a different story. First you get a tutorial level on the Ebon Hawk (your ship), which I think is actually more interesting than KOTOR's Endar Spire tutorial, and you can even skip it if you don't want the tutorial, cool! However, the game continues on the Peragus mining station, which is a big level (not as big as Taris though) and you have to traverse the station in a linear way, even while the station's structure is non linear at all. Since you're doing the same things in the same order every playthrough, it start to get boring on the second time, there's even a part where you have to put on EVA gear, slowly walk to the other side of the station, just to play a cutscene. Did I mention the optional tutorial level at the beginning? well the game is still giving the player pieces of tutorials on Peragus station, so what's the point? After you're finally done with Peragus station, you'll get to Telos station, which is kind of like Taris from KOTOR, but much smaller and much lesser places to explore, you can't leave because your space ship is stolen. After choosing between helping some eco friendly aliens or working for a greedy corp, you'll get to leave Telos station and go to the north pole to get your space ship back, so you can travel the galaxy as your will, but before reaching your ship, your shuttle got shot down, so you'll have to fight your way through the surface to get to another shuttle, which got shot down again, luckly this time you crash right at the north pole where your ship is located, go talk to some exile jedi and you're finally free to choose your next destination. KOTOR2's opening (or maybe it should count as the first chapter of the game since how long it is) is so much more tedious than KOTOR's Taris, though they are both unskippable, KOTOR gives the player much more freedom to run around, and not all missions are necessary to progress the main story. KOTOR2 on the other hand, have long linear levels, minimal choices, you feel like doing the same things in the same order and getting the same loot for hours in every playthrough, the only difference is the character you build. To be clear, KOTOR's Taris level isn't amazing, but I still find it somehow enjoyable, and I definitely prefer Taris more than KOTOR2.

Wish the game dropped the player outside the cave so you can start exploring.

The driver tutorial was a real feel. I didn't have a memory card back in the day so I had to replay it several times.

I knew I would find both Kotor firsts levels in that video I just wasn't expecting to be number 1 but you know I actually love those levels especially dark side wise where there's so many ways to screw over people lives

Alternate Start is used for role playing hence why they provide a wide selection of themes to start your game at. The game automatically creates a separate save file for you at the moment you get to the character creation screen. Also most mods don’t require a new save file I have over 300 mods and only one has ever told me to start fresh (Civil War Overhaul, it’s a trash mod).
