DCS is no joke, I play it in VR, learned the F/A 18, my wife was laughing when I was reading all the manuals for it. VTOL VR is much more fun and much easier learning curve, granted doesn’t have HOTAS support, which does suck.

As a kerbal player, i think they’ve massively undersold the actual complexity of the game, especially when it comes to calculating manoeuvres manually, and understanding orbits,delta-v,and gravity influence, i used to think the hardest part was going to the farthest planets, but honestly making a geostationary satellite took about 200 hours alone

Elite Dangerous is also a game that isn’t so new player friendly. It has a very steep learning curve and the controls if you’re on a controller is difficult, especially when you get into fire groups. And since you’re limited by the few buttons of the controller, you end up have a lot of fire groups, and switching between them can be a hassle.

I miss seeing new Armored Core games. You had to use almost every button very often which meant moments that you had release the thumbs sticks while firing to reach them without a special controller. The campaign was easy for all of them, it was the arena which became multiplayer where things got crazy. If a mech had an anime character emblem made from the rudimentary tools and shapes you knew they were coming for your soul.

KSP is easy - just strap on more boosters. If the rocket is wobbly, add struts. Get your staging right so that first stage starts before the second stage. Done. For orbits, look up a 30 min video or tutorial - it's actually pretty easy. Unless you start adding realism mods on top of mods it shouldn't be that big of a deal. My problem with the game is that there is no story or plot - I am hoping that KSP2 will add that.

It was my first from software game to experience and it was tough and the fights against Owl Father or Sword Saint were bloody brutal and caused many rage quits. DCS World is actually not as hard as you describe it, there are options (game mode) to turn down the realistic controls of the plane, and there are also auto startup (and shutdown) sequences that start-up the aircraft for you, you can literally just press a button and the aircraft starts itself up. Furthermore, not all of the jets in DCS World are full-fidelity modules, which means you don't need to or can't click any of the buttons in the cockpit, which is much more new player-friendly. There are also full built-in tutorials of each aircraft teaching you the basics. However, just like most games, being good at it does actually require hundreds of hours of practicing.

He’s got a pretty beefy pc with like a flight stick controller and they both constantly run flights and spend hours flying different planes. Recently he was like “dude I gotta show you this new flight sim I’ve got” turns out it’s DCS world. He had me try out a fighter jet, take off, arm missiles, and take down other planes. He said he spent hours looking up tutorials and reading aircraft manuals just learn how to start the damn thing. I didn't find the campaign all that compelling, but it was a fun game. Definitely with a high learning curve as you said. But it was very satisfying once you began to get a feel for the game. Weight to thrust ratios, and concepts like Delta V. The difficulty is understandable and at some point becomes charming, because you realize how much you are actually learning on the way. You are litterally learning conecpts of rocket science, orbital mechanics, and everything just blows up sometimes for no reason.

DCS might be difficult, but for completely different reasons than you described. There are great illustrated tutorials made by Chuck_owl and there's an autostart button for the lazy. Getting the plane into air and missiles off rails is a matter of minutes, not hours. None of this poses any challenge for a healthy adult. The real challenge is being effective in those planes. Unlike the military-industrial complex wants you to believe, these toys do not hold your hand. You'll find yourself task saturated ("spilling the bucket") all the time when you're trying to put weapons on targets while not getting shot down in return. Learning close formation flying and doing air-to-air refueling requires a fail-until-you-don't approach and many give up before they knack it. To make this fun in the long run, you need like-minded people so joining some kind of online community is a must, and they range from casual to hardcore. Some virtual air wings make you qualify in a trainer plane first and keep score on how well you've done in comparison to your squadron mates just like in the real life. In short: DCS is only as hard as you make it, and you can always make it harder.

Not to mention that bulk of the DCS players come from other games either earlier realistic sims (Falcon 4/BMS, Jane's combat sim series, Lock-On) or other less complex but still infomative games (War Thunder, Strike Fighters series, -Ace Combat- [ok, bad example]) so they already have a some semblance of basic knowledge of military aviation.

Great video. I was wondering if DCS would make the list, but I think the commentary was probably a little harsh. Most of the aircraft have interactive tutorials to teach you the basics like engine start-up, take-off, landing and even weapons use etc. It's all there in the main menu if you look for it and while complex, will become second nature if repeated successfully and often enough, which is where most new players will most likely get discouraged. The DCS aircraft modules require a LOT of commitment from the player to learn properly, so anyone looking for simple and quick gratification will be turned off. The second turnoff, is that to get the most out of it requires the purchase of some pricey items like Joystick, throttle and rudder pedal combo's along with Track IR etc. Most gamers cant afford that. But, DCS will reward those that put the time and effort into it, and pulling off that first successful circuit landing is incredibly satisfying... but just not for everyone I guess.

Love your vids, Gameranx, but that's a weird take on DCS World. 1) Even the most complex aircraft have auto-start options (i.e. press a button and wait while everything happens for you), if you choose to use them. 2) There are playable tutorials for every single aircraft (possible exception to ones still in early access). Granted, some of these aren't so good, but even then there are PDF manuals in the game folder for every aircraft. If you prefer seeing procedures demonstrated in realtime, only then is KZread necessary. 3) "20% flying, 80% studying" - Unlikely, but it depends on what you have and what you want. The Flaming Cliffs 3 addon contains planes with simplified avionics that you can figure out in just a few hours. Most modules, like the F/A-18 Hornet and F-14 Tomcat, require a fair bit of study to operate weapons and sensors effectively, but you can go from tarmac to sky with most aircraft in a couple hours (helicopters notwithstanding). 4) Learning to play DCS is nothing like actual flight school. You don't have to read "actual aircraft manuals." Who told you that? 5) If it takes you "hundreds of hours" to learn taking off and landing in DCS, then there's something wrong with your approach to learning. Look, DCS World is hard, no doubt, and "new players" broadly speaking might find it a bit much. However, the target demographic is flight simulator fans, not gamers in general. DCS very well might belong on this list, but a lot of the information you provided to justify it is exaggerated or wrong.

I think EVE gets a bit of a bad rap sometimes. Sure, it's got a lot of complexity, but it's also got a decent tutorial for new players and an initial string of NPC missions that will get you quite a few various ships. These are smaller ships, but that's what you should be flying till you get familiar with the game anyways since they're cheaper to replace if you lose one. The community can be quite helpful to people asking questions in chat and lots of players will offer to take a noob under their wing and teach them the game. Yes, you can be killed by more experience players anywhere and anytime, but there's plenty of high security space where the cost of killing you will far exceed the benefit. In many places, you simply not worth shooting if you're new.

If you have a human+ save from the OG AC game, it's supposed to be rather easy but if you don't get human plus then it's a challenge. Why did I word it like that? I played AC up till MoA without knowing about the human plus system. I hated being in debt so when that happened, I restarted the game. The worst enemies for me were enemies that used the GL, Karasawa, and the Moonlight. I spent most of my time in those fights dodging. An added layer of difficulty was that I never learned about boost hopping by myself. It was when I joined an AC fan forum that I was informed on it. When did I join? After LR was released. T T

Oh, I finished MoA a very long time ago. I just recall the controls being tricky because I nostalgia bought it, tried playing again, and noped out of finishing it again. lol, I remember spamming height differentials to take advantage of the AI in Arena. There were two maps where that was very feasible and you could just unload on rankers with auto lock missiles as they were trying to figure out how to reach you. I remember less of AC2 despite having finished it, too... Never played Silent Line or Last Raven that I know of.

I love Arma 3, i unfortunately cant get into a community due to time in my own life, but the mod community makes the game even crazier: Advanced medical to have different bandages, morphine, epinephrine, blood transfusions, even more if you so choose. Advanded movement options like clambering ontop of almost anything and everything Mods that go into almost any universe with their own mechanics and weapons, even jetpacks for each mod. Advanced ballistics for weapons. Aircraft controls that are highly realistic and a steep learning curve. Arma Reforger was recently announced that is the next step up, and in the next few years, Arma 4 which will highly improve on Arma 3, modders will do even more for this next installment. For beginners, if you find it on sale, lookup some Arma youtubers/streamers to watch how it plays, get into a community if you can, or just get the game and goof off in the game editor mode, making missions and just having lots of fun.

As a DCS player and former Army Aviation Soldier I will agree that DCS is the most complex and involved combat flight simulator out there to date for the public. It does take weeks to even learn how to fly the various aircraft but it is so rewarding ( if you are doing it correctly and to standard). It does have auto-start, however that does not help you to fly in combat or really understand what you are doing in the cockpit. I will say this is not a aircraft shooter or really its not a game and to call it such, is a massive understatement. Eagle Dynamics also runs the actual simulator for the US military, so it has to be accurate. You are not just going to hop into any given aircraft and go shoot stuff, it takes many hours just to get the plane started and then more to get it airborne and land and the combat AI is even more intuitive and reacts to combat just like a human would. However, if you have the patients, it is so rewarding. I will state again, this really is not a game, although you can, technically use a keyboard and mouse, the ability to do so is near impossible. you will need a good flight stick and throttle and possibly rudders as well and dont think that they are cheap. An investment of a minimum of $800 in flight gear, and this is just a stick, throttle and rudders is a good start but not the ceiling of what you can spend and that does not include your computer price. It is fully VR capable and one of the best VR environments you will ever see, but then your looking at a $1700 graphics card and another minimum of $700 in a VR headset ( you really don't want to use the oculus, its like wearing eyeglasses smeared with grease). I wrote this blog not to discourage future pilots but to give them an understanding of what you will be getting into.

I literally just started playing dcs and it’s great. Lol. It’s not as bad as people describe it. Starting off with the SU-25T, it’s not even a fully fledged cockpit with all interactive switches and buttons and stuff so it’s kinda easy to learn on (but you gotta remember all the keyboard shortcuts or inputs on your stick and throttle). Starting it up and taking off isn’t crazy difficult or anything but learning to control the aircraft in the air is a little bit harder especially if you don’t know all the controls or what everything means. Landing was really difficult for me to learn and I haven’t even started on dog fights yet. Lol. I want to learn how to fly properly first before getting into the other stuff.

I'd honestly say the Su-25T isn't the best free starter module. It's alright as a demo but its flight handling and avionics (being Russian rather the predominantly West systems once you decide to go into others) doesn't really do justice. The full fidelity modules can be harsh to learn for the uninitiated, but overall the basic flight is relatively simple especially on FBW planes like the F-16/-18. Then again I primarily fly the C-Hog and Flanker so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You had to watch your power consumption, the weight of your parts on your legs total as well as the weight of your arm and arm weapons on the core. Your leg part determand if you neaded to assume a firing position if you were using shoulder weapons with high recoil. Did you use a shoulder mounted radar or a head unit that had a radar built in? (I advise using the head if you have one.) You get the idea.

Sandbox with unlimited parts is harder to learn in than career with a very small pool of parts. A bigger rocket is often harder to get to space than a smaller one. Flying too fast in atmosphere burns more fuel than fighting gravity longer at a lower speed. A lot of times in KSP you're banging your head against the wall wondering "why doesn't this work?" and when you later find out it makes total sense to you why it didn't work.
