that's a part of why i don't play them, like alot of people are loving the new RE remakes, but i can't see myself getting passed things like Mr. X or whatever, and Alien Isolation sounds impossible for someone like me, just cause i'm not as skilled at that kind of stealth, and i grew up playing the Splinter Cell games and loved the Dishonored and Batman: Arkham games, as some examples.

@@Tokru86 In theory, that makes sense but the boss usually has attacks that hit everyone at once while doing crazy amounts of damage, inflicting status effects, & sometimes having random crits & the ability to summon allies. Shadow Queen was terrible about that in Paper Mario 2. She'd attack twice & summon 2 hands in the same turn & the hands would immediately attack too. It was very easy for her to end the fight in one turn.

Every difficulty had additional objectives... and it made sense, cus a recruit would not be sent and expected to achieve what a 00 agent would be capable of. Mariokark 64 was really bad, where if you let 1st place get out of sight, they were gone. I think Forza and GT Sport have the best racing game AI. I only really have experience with Forza but heard good things about GT AI. I like that I can beat "Pro" Forza AI and their fastest AI are called "UNBEATABLE" but are in fact beatable, and there's no "catch-up" mechanic which is usually the culprit for rubberbanding AI. From my experience the Forza AI difficulty levels just set the AI lap times to a certain average, so if I'm 2 seconds a lap faster than the fastest car, I know I can turn my difficulty up for some close racing.

It's frustrating because it's an easy fix. A good simple fix would be a "chaos factor" to dampen their accuracy. Most of the time firing is based on something called raycasting, where basically the game draws a line between the gun and a point being aimed at, but the AI can track a moving target with perfect accuracy. You could just simulate accuracy when they fire using the distance the AI is firing and the range of the gun they're using, and then calculate that chaos factor to cause a slightly randomized change in the raycast determining where the bullet goes.

I want games to have easy settings, normal settings, and hard settings, and I don't want anything locked behind a difficulty gate. If your game is fun enough on hard, I'll play it on hard. @@imnotmike I agree in a general sense, but I think there's a time and place for everything, and there should be games gatekeeping content behind skill-checks. Thinking about the Souls series, which would never have had the success they had if they had a difficulty setting for instance, or Hyper Light Drifter that had a game critic getting mocked for finding it too difficult, or Super Meat Boy, etc... There are lots of games out there, and having some that are just there to test your skills is not a bad thing, I think. I think Doom Eternal handles it’s high difficulty option really well. On Nightmare the enemies have no health amplifiers so they aren’t spongier and doesn’t slow the game down. However the player receiving more damage per hit means that they have less mistakes to make and it fits the break neck pace and 100 decisions a minute game design, and finally it makes the AI super aggressive and unrelenting meaning the players have to move around the arena and be on top of everything to keep goin’ and it’s exhilarating.

Fully agree on puzzle handling. It's so easy for developers to forget how little sense a puzzle makes to someone who doesn't already know the solution, and sometimes they screw up by not thinking of potentially more logical answers or reasoning that completely undermine the intended solution. One difficulty I felt was severely mixed was the first Lost Planet. It did some COOL stuff for harder difficulties, like making enemies significantly larger, adding more of them to the level, and even making you fight two of the boss. However, it also throws in severe heat depletion which is literally a time limit slowly creeping up on you the whole time you're playing. On any normal setting, it's not a big deal, as you can build up a lot of heat from killing enemies and scavenging heat sources so it's not a problem, but they went overkill on increasing the rate of depletion such that it just feels unwinnable. Enemies could have been made to give huge amounts of heat, but they just give the same amount as always, or very close to it, making it deplete just as much as you gain in the time it takes to shoot one down, even if you're pretty quick about it.

I mostly play on Normal/Medium/Default difficulty level. I just want to have fun and experience the game. Repeating sections of the game multiple times just because the game is artificially made harder by enemies with more health or some mechanic like that isn't rewarding at all to me. I just get frustrated and waste time for no reason like that. I don't have so much time to play games as I had when I was younger, so wasting it on harder difficulty is just pointless for me.

  • @omega2279

In defense of EDF, the point of the higher difficulties isn't so much the challenge (which is bullshit, yes) than dropping VASTLY more powerful weapons that can utterly crush some missions. I always go play the early missions of hard mode when I'm stuck in late normal, because while it may suck, it has the very real possibility of allowing me to go back with the power of a galaxy.

There was a jump at the end of it that sometimes you wouldn't make it because the ground at the end of the jump wouldn't load in. I solved it by pausing the xbox in mid air, which allowed time for the ground to load in.

1:49 ultimately, most of the time timers on games make them less fun, either you have to rush so you can't enjoy exploration or even core aspects of the game all that much or it's a "fake" timer like in Lightning Returns where it rushes you for no reason since in reality you have all the time in the world (apparently most just fast forward the last day cause they already did everything doable). I ended up playing on easy because the timer worried me so much but even only using starting gear there was so little challenge I lost interest in the game and only because of a mechanic that brings nothing to the table and should have been fully story driven so that completing the main story is the only thing advancing the timer and you cannot run out of time even if you afk a week.

One of my favorite games rn is WolfQuest Anniversary Edition because of the highest difficulty: Accurate. Now there's the obvious that stamina and health recover slower and your hunger goes down faster, as with many games I bet. But the actual numbers for those values don't change on either the player's wolf or any of the enemies. What did they do? They made it so everything does more damage. Yes, you're more dangerous to an elk, but the elk is more dangerous to you too. I dunno, I love playing on Accurate so this made me happy because of how much it forces you to act like a real wolf and gague situations on whether it's worth it or not XD

I like to explore, collect everything, play around with mechanics and AI, and generally just take my time. I don't see the point in rushing through a game I spent $60 to enjoy. It's even worse when the devs make the map fun to explore, but then shackle you with a time limit that discourages exploration.

Rabi-Ribi (a bullet hell metroidvania action game) has cool ways of making the difficulty settings more unique. The increases to the stats aren't very big in most cases but they make up for it with things like increased projectile speed, more complex versions of the boss attacks, completely new boss attacks, new situational buffs for the bosses, & stricter item limits for the player. It falls apart in Bunny Extinction Mode though, where boss health sky rockets so the bosses that already had the most health increase in difficulty by a wildly disproportionate amount so a player who's good enough to coast through most of the game can get stuck on chapter 5 (a boss gauntlet containing the hardest bosses & no shops or save points) for days.

It's more than that, it's that the numbers ultimately don't mean anything, in Diablo for example, it boils down to to numbers but you can feel progression in ability as you go. In the division series, which I feel is the poster child of this issue, is you can stack up bonuses get high-quality gear and it would work literally the same on every mission, there's no sense of getting stronger there is no sense you are a super agent trying to save a nation when the only way to get a leg up is to have an obsessive knowledge of the games mechanics. At that point you should find a new game.

The thumbnail made me remember about the evil within 1 where in nightmare/hard they added more enemies, change their positions, and even add an enemy thats supposed to be in a later chapter into the earlier ones (mimic in chapter 3 & 4)... it also reminded me of the many times i died in akumu mode

One of the difficulty setting that pretty much compiled all of this but was still good was DMC's "Dante must Die" difficulty. It was hard, but also very fitting for a hack'n slash / Beat'em all type of game.

Now which one is really the saddest there 🤔, oh and stfu no one gives af if someone plays on easy or hard while blind folded.

The most annoying to me is lazy scaling for difficulty. I hate bullet-sponge enemies being the difference between settings. There are easy ways to make a game more (or less) difficult using existing mechanics like lower ammo capacity or enemies drop less goodies. Steeper accuracy penalties at longer range, and/or greater recoil effects. Less effective buffs or shorter duration. Little things that make it more challenging but not stupid.

Yeah, the timer for the dead rising series is one I can deal with since it's a sandbox type game. When it comes to a set plot, though, I don't like too many timers unless it's sidescrolling platform games
