What do you keep in storage?

I’ve never believed in storage units, however I do store a few boxes of items in my parents shed (they own a lot of property and it does not inconvenience them). I moved out of a large house, sold 90% of what was inside, and moved south for the winter temporarily. I stored items I didn’t need such as winter outerwear, camping supplies I wouldn’t need etc. They know that this is a short term storage solution, that has an end date, after they assured me it was no bother to them.

Nothing in storage units, but I joke with my husband when I am taking things to the donation center that I am putting it in storage. I have a holiday box, and our camping gear in the storage closet in our house.

I know people who've had the same storage with the same stuff in it for 45 years! They don't even know what's in it anymore. I unloaded storage units years ago and never looked back.

" Paying to Procrastinate." That's a Good One. TRUE. Sell ALL the Thing's that you No Longer Want, so you can Get WHAT you Really Actually Need. (Done It.)If you just Can't Part with that "Special" Something but Aren't Using It, Take a Picture of It and LET IT GO.

I really related to TK’s reflection on burning bridges so we don’t return to the past. I left a toxic job in the spring, I made sure I was cordial and didn’t even tell them the real reason why I was leaving (workplace harassment). In the moment I wanted to have this place to fall back on in case my dream of working for myself didn’t pan out. Now looking back, I could never return for my own mental health and found comfort in TK’s words of “I’m not coming back”.

We got a storage unit when we sold our home after becoming empty nesters because we had to get everything out fast. 3 years and $4k later, we emptied that storage unit and donated it all because we took the route of tiny home living. We vowed to never waste money on a storage space again. It was such a burden. 😅

When I decluttered, if there was not room for it to be on display, or was not fire safe worthy, it went to the local charity. The memories are still there, so I let it go.

Aaaah, nothing but gold here. I have been trying to persuade a friend to get rid of her storage (last time she gave me some baby and maternity clothes from that storage when I was pregnant, they were literally falling apart) using the same reasoning as you are here but to no avail. BUT NOW, I can send her the link to this video where YOU - THE EXPERTS - talk about it and it may just help...🤞

It's important to allow for your tastes to change, and to accept that your tastes have changed. Storing stuff is just buying it all over again, so why not buy what you like NOW?

I don't have a storage unit, but I never thought about if you store Holiday items for let's say $900 a year you could just repurchase new Holiday items with that money. A lot of my Christmas decorations are sentimental. Such as ornaments the kids made or ornaments that were my parents when I was a kid. I don't know if I would want them off of my premises. I like to watch You Tube videos of people decorating their home for Christmas. Some of them have their stuff in storage units and take us along to get it out. I think by the size of the units they cost more than $100 a month. On another note: I am 61 years old and wonder how I ever thought Abbot and Costello or Saturday Night Live was funny 🤔

I've been living 'temporary' for the last 9 years - in a hostel, caravan, tiny cabin, with friends. No storage, just my minimal stuff, which does include hobby supplies and my harp and violin. It took me years to get to this level of being minimal. But everyone is different.

Had a storage unit for a month while between houses. Drove my wife crazy. Her mother had a storage unit while growing up that she forgot to make payments on. Everything was auctioned off, and the thought of that happening again gives her anxiety.

The only time I use self storage is for 6 months each year, starting last year. I store my daughters college items instead of going through the HUGE hassle of bringing them home at the end of the school year, then having to take them all back 2 or 3 months later. We get the smallest unit available and don’t even use half of it. As she moves items in the last few months of the semester, it makes her reassess what she owns and gives her a chance to get rid of items she doesn’t use.

If youre in a hoarder like situation, I could see using a storage locker close by to store the things you want to keep, then get the crap out and have the space to clean properly and then bring only what you value back from storage. Maybe if youre moving but the dates dont line up thats another good reason...but I love what Josh said, "should we be storing it away from ourselves, we hate it but want to hold on to it?" Thats our society all over!

@@developerrrrr - I am a minimalist. I would use storage, because I travel for half the year and would have no place to keep my things. I already don’t have much, but I would need them when I get back. When I’m traveling (long distance hiking), I can only take what fits in a backpack. As you can imagine, I need to store my regular life things that I can’t bring with me (e.g. laptop, daily/work clothes, etc). My point is that storage is not always wrong. It can be useful and temporary for specific purposes. Would I rather pay thousands in rent for an apartment I’m not living in for months or under $100 a month for a small storage locker? Easy choice. I get that my example is not the typical person though, but there are a lot more of us than you think. The biggest issue I run into is availability of the smallest units (5x5 half height). So many “regular life” people are using storage for permanent storage that availability is sometimes a problem.
