on average up to £40 (uk), for something very very special maybe £100. but nothing over that. It is okay to buy good quality, but for expensive handbags like that no way, I would rather help poorer people in need, that would give me better happiness.

Max $100 because I buy a certain brand for durability, lightweight, crossbody, travel safe (rfid). I need a wide shoulder strap because of pain issues. I use the purse for years then I send to Goodwill when I need a change in color or style. When I was young max $20. I didn’t need orthopedic or travel considerations, anything that struck my fancy and was inexpensive.

My husband and I just took a trip with a friend and her husband. I’m a minimalist so I packed very lightly. Our friends are not minimalists, so they did not. She brought her Louis Vuitton backpack and her Louis Vuitton duffel bag, a lot of really beautiful cloths, etc. I noticed that I was feeling a bit “less than”. I also noticed that the thought of purchasing a purse or a backpack or a duffel bag for $3000 is just something I could never do. I’d feel terribly guilty knowing that the money could have been given to someone who needed some help, or to another good cause. Even still, I looked into buying these things used. It’s amazing how you can so easily get pulled into a way of thinking that you don’t even agree with.

I hear you on the cost and not being able to pay that much; but the helping someone or going to a good cause is in my opinion the wrong lens to look through. Jesus himself said 'the poor will always be with us'. We know from experience that when people get things for free, they do not value it. I traveled with a young woman who needed expensive things too, and she couldn't carry her suitcase because it would ruin her manicure, so I was her lackey. But there we were, seeing the same art, staying in the same hotel room together, eating the same food, meeting the same people. We can spend our money as we see fit. Your friends aren't making demands on others to buy the Louis Vuitton bag for them. They worked for it and the Vuitton company represents excellence and quality. I'm thinking there's another lens to see it. Remember the woman who poured expensive perfume on Jesus feet, and the disciples said 'She could have used that to buy food for the poor'. Jesus commended her for doing what she did. We need to discuss why even bother having excellence in handbags if people would rather buy no name brands, and give all their money to the poor who will always demand more? I don't know...I'm just thinking out loud. I'd love for you to have an expensive item that would bring you joy. Maybe it's not a handbag, but maybe it's a perfume, or a dish, or a vacation in a gorgeous castle?

How about a $250 wedding cake and buying food… $24,750 to feed children a nourishing meal at school…children who go to school hungry everyday because their parents don’t have the means to feed their kids, financial or otherwise. Frivolous waste has the devil written all over it. Have your awesome house, car, boat motorcycle etc…but don’t throw money away stupidly that can be used altruistically.

I agree with Josh - the way that these items are now marketed as the status quo rather than high end luxury, especially through the exposure of influencers, celebrities and reality TV, is disturbing. AND....$250k on a HANDBAG??? I just think of what that money could do for social and health problems, or what I could do for my family with that money (my youngest son has a disability), and I just can't justify it in my brain. The most I would spend is $200 but that's if I commit to a "timeless" style that I will not change in 20 years and best believe I'm taking it to those repair shops. Right now my favorite ran around $20 and I keep it wiped down, organized, vacuum any crumbs and put a scarf bow on it 😂

I understand that people purchase expensive things as investments, but if it's something like a bag that you will actually use and take out with you, it seems beyond excessive. $250,000 for a handbag is obviously no longer about utility and practicality and becomes a symbol of wealth and influence. It's an expensive way to get people to notice you through the items you wear and carry, though of course on the flip side, I would have also thought that it would make you more of a target for thieves. To think that each time you take it out with you, it would be like you're carrying around $250,000. That's so crazy to me! I've had my classic Mat and Nat tan tote bag now for about 14 years and it's still going strong! It was on sale and I don't think I spent more than $100 on it. For me personally, I can think of so many more things that I would rather spend my hard-earned money on.

I think the issue I have this type of consumerism is two-fold. First is what you are talking about. It sends a signal that if you don't have it you are lacking, or if you have it you are better than. The other issue I have is with people like the Bezos, Musks etc who use their extensive wealth for vanity projects when they could be doing good with that money. When the rest of the world sees that, it gives permission to everyone else who is privileged with wealth to spend "selfishly" rather than to make someone else's life better. How much respect should someone receive for donating $250k to a worthy charity, school, hospital etc. than for buying a purse. But it is their money and they are free to spend it how they like...too bad we live in a society that honours hand bags over humanity.

I've had the same fossil bag for ten years, bought as a Mother's Day present. Honestly the styling is not minimal, I don't care whether I am going to an expensive restaurant, a hospital appointment or just for every day use, if people judge me because I have a boho slightly tatty round the edges bag, they are not worth knowing. Once the bag falls apart I will try to replace it, probably off ebay. I don't need expensive things around me to feel happy. My daughter saw it in an outlet store and it has been the best present she has ever given me, useful and so me, boo hoo, perfect number of pockets etc. Personally, I thinks it obscene with all the issues in the world to spend that much on a bag. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I still wouldn't buy one of those bags, EVER GUARANTEED OR AN EXPENSIVE CHUCK OF METAL - LUXURY CAR, OR SMALL GLITTERY THINGS - DIAMONDS. I would open up some form of Foundation to further literacy and reading in adults and children!

I have never understood the expensive handbag thing and wouldn‘t want to be a walking ad for a brand anyway. I use a small bag daily, cost between 12-80 (leather), I don‘t really care and when I need a new one I look for one I like less than the price. However, with this Hermes bag, I did wonder if it‘s comparable to someone buying a piece of art - a bag this expensive can‘t be used, so you‘d have to somehow exhibit it and then it becomes a piece of art (beauty in the eye of the beholder, subjective) and we know people pay these prices for art, so maybe that is the motivation?? It‘s the only reasoning I can think of, though I never understood that, either, when I look at multimillion paintings in museums… either I like it or often, I don‘t!! Worth it to someone, I guess.

Very hard to justify this level of indulgence. However, we’re all playing a status game one way or another. This community is no different. The status game by Will Stour is a great book. Really got me defensive at first (always a good sign you should continue down that path with curiosity) but i learnt that our status game will be a mix from three categories - dominance, virtue and success. There is only one thing for sure. We’re always playing a mix of these. The scale slides and the balance is a,ways different, but a 250k handbag is just another status play. As is the virtue play of discrediting it.

I agree. I think some things are fairly priced based on the work and supplies to make something, and then are other things that are way overpriced for what they are and need way less money to be made then what the price at the end for that thing is. If I’m only talking about bags, I think Mulberry makes bags of amazing quality and is probably better if not the same quality as Hermes, and yet Mulberry prices are way lower than Hermes. Don’t get me wrong, Mulberry is still an expensive and luxury brand, but I feel like their products are still fairly priced compared to Hermes. Some brands are just ridiculous with their price range! However, I like getting things of higher quality than something that costs 20€ and it rips apart in a year.

This definitely bothers me! Everything has a value. The manufacturing cost of a well made leather handbag is unlikely to be more than $300 and some people will be willing and able to pay that. Inflation based on desirability is a mercantile issue- the more people excluded from being able to buy something, the more desirable we are told it must be. What if we focus instead on how much benefit our money brings to others. For example, we had $250,000 could we set up a company employing 20 people to craft quality handbags? A shift in how we think about wealth is needed.

I have no problem with luxury, but wasteful opulence is something I can never get behind. Granted, I subscribe to lots of minimalist ideas, and I also tend to lean a bit left, so those might both be reasons why. I can't help but think of the opportunity cost. You can do so much with 250k.

I think the exotic skin bothers me more than what someone pays for a bag We have no idea what a luxury bag owner donates. Etc. The bag should not define them. That looked to be a resale store. They generally sell above retail. Their job is to create that sense of you’ve arrived once you own this. That’s another podcast though.

Some of these ultra expensive items are created with no buyer intended. They are made and marketed just for publicity. Even if no one ever buys that bag, look at the free advertising that video clip has given Hermès. It can also be used as an "anchor bias." That $250,000 bag is making the $35,000 bag seem not so unreasonably priced in comparison. Hermés doesn't care of the bag priced at 1/4 million never sells if it can sell a hundred thousand at twenty grand or more.

Most of the influencers that have Hermes they look like, the bag carrying them. The bag goes first. They are really don’t know how to use a bag. The bag use them. I can spend 150 for a bag because I know I can have it for years. I think though that something that costs 250000 is more of an investment. I don’t thing there are going to put there’s children snacks in them😂

Don’t worry. The person that buys the $195,000 handbag will lose interest in it after a period and wonder why they even bought it. Same insatiable cycle of human desire that everyone experiences. Once your needs are met, wanting is better than having.

it's about the unethical pricing that should be in question on many things. Because you can is not a reason to do and to rationalize it. Unethicalness is a real thing on many material things because there are people who allow it and it has been made to be okay as long as there is a buyer to be had. It's all just twisted unethical rationale that has especially permeated western culture the last 30-ish years. It's sad and there are rationalizers to rationalize it to make it normalized and somehow okay because there are buyers willing to be basically ripped off willingly and a certain market preys upon.

I wonder how hollow the life being lived that thinks such a purchase is needed? I have never looked at a woman's bag once in my life to size her up as a person, for success, or for an idea of personality. I do often take into account a persons hands and shoes. Otherwise I watch to see how they treat others when they themselves are stressed, angry, or in a neutral state. This defines more often than not the quality, or should I say value of the being before me. not the price tag of a sack they carry. "shrug" Just my thoughts.

This is the "IT" bag and I would love it if was maybe $1,500 because of the gold plated elements. These brands are now owned by corporations and 2 of them are the top billionaires. I chose not to buy a top brand watch when I was younger as I realized my community did not own such items. Blending in is a forte.
