Good to see you on again. I feared you had moved on. I purchased the top of the line RM unit last year at $600+. Has most of the options of the new one you're describing. Mine is a POS! Magnetic mount is weak, allowing the head to discharge when jarred loose. The unit started to freeze up occasionally after about a month. Took it out of the truck last week as it freezes more than it works now. Swore off RM forever. Using Google and Truckers Path now. Will shop Garmin and try to catch a sale.

I had a RM 750 crap out on me earlier this year cuz it would no longer charge. I tried everything but it ended up in the trash. It’s a shame RM and Garmin can’t stand firmer behind their products. For as expensive as they are, they should come with a 2 year fully replaceable warranty. It's the charging cable or port most of the time. Why do people quick to give up instead of improvising. I ordered new cords on Amazon and added 3M double sided tape, also invented another way to mount it. Rand McNally is the Rolls Royce of GPS you'll regret Garmin big time.

  • @RushinTruckin

@jmaegm I tried another RM charging cord that I knew worked but it didn’t on the lemon. There are a lot of things to like about RM. The routing is good 90% of the time but that 10% is the stupidest routing I’ve seen. If you don’t double check it, it’ll add miles for no reason. Sometimes, it’ll think there’s a weight limited road when there isn’t…stuff like that.

  • @jamessurplus8988

@@jmaegm Well if you find some duct tape that will keep it from freezing up and completely useless after 30 mins on a fresh charge, with an additional USB cord plugged in for charging, while it's on its stand, pls forward the link! I don't expect to have to use bailing wire and duct tape to get their top of the line unit to work after 30 days or operation.

I agree with a large majority of what you said. I think overall, the Garmin OTR series does give better directions. I have had my OTR1000 do stupid things as well, but I feel it is a bit better than the RM. I love the "edit" route feature on the Garmin that isn't really possible on the RM, but it's unreliable as the Garmin will still change the route half way through your trip without telling you. You'll find it trying to lead you a direction you know you were trying to avoid when you made edit points in the route it was wanting you to go. RM's way of editing routes is more tedious with setting mutlple destinations, but that also makes it reliable as it is only focused on directions from stop, to stop to stop so it won't just randomly change the route you chose. The ability to zoom in and out of the map on the RM compared to the Garmin is drastically better. It makes trying to find specific spots on the map, (like when looking at google or Trucker Path and trying to set you destination to the actual entrance to a customer) so much easier than on Garmin. Garmin the map always wants to flip around upside down and do stupid stuff when trying to manually zoom in on the map. When it starts acting stupid, I have to zoom all the way out to continent view to get it to correct the map and then start zooming in again. So aggrivating. I like the size of the 1050, but it's weight vs magnetic strength is an issue. If you hit some serious bumps (I65 in Indiana), it will fall off the mount. It would basically have to be suctioned to the windshield with the GPS resting on the dash for it to not fall off when hitting hardcore bumps. I also have the Overydryve II Pro 8" model which I was using before I bought the 1050 and it has never fallen off the magnetic mount. I run my OTR1000, RM and Trucker Path simultaneously as they all 3 try to do stupid things at one time or another. I like my RM best, I like my Garmin for straight up directions and I like to check statuses of truck stops, weight stations and see customer entrance/exits, and get reviews from Trucker Path. All 3 are great and horrible devices in their own right. It would be an awesome device if you could combine the best of all 3 of those (and police warnings of Waze; because Trucker Path's method is sub par). I would find it very difficult to chose just one. It would be painful to choose either RM or Garmin and run it with Trucker Path. Only Trucker Path can give you that Truck Stop parking/weigh station status. Thanks for this very detailed and fabulous review!

  • @RushinTruckin

Good ones. I do have mine suctioned to the windshield and resting on the dash 🤣 for that very reason. I’ve never had it bounce off but it vibrating annoys me to no end. I’ve said that very same thing that if Google, Waze, RM, Garmin, and TP would all come together and make a truck specific gps, it would be amazing but it’ll never happen

  • @Hutch_x

So RM doesn’t randomly change your route for no reason but the Garmin OTR does? I’m relatively new to trucking and Trucker Path has been screwing me up A LOT. For example I’ll select Route 2 because it’s a more straight shot but then it’ll change it to Route 1 mid trip without any notice. Yes I realize I need to remember my exits and routes a bit better but I’d like something more reliable that won’t change mid trip. Any info is appreciated.

  • @RushinTruckin

    @RushinTruckin

    6 ай бұрын

@Hutch_x every one I’ve used has done that unfortunately. Not every time but enough to be frustrating. Make sure you have a good idea as to where you’re going without it. Do the pre-trip of the final miles using Google maps satellite and street views. Also it’s good to have a secondary route those last few miles in case there’s a new no truck sign that wasn’t on street view (it’s happened to me a few times)

  • @cotjocky466

@@Hutch_x Trucker Path is a great app. It got a update recently that made it much better on my iPad. I hate I have to click so many buttons just to end the route I’m following and it doesn’t always pick a good of a path as Garmin or Rand McNally, but it is a great tool with options no other GPS offers at $99 a year. I won’t say that RM never ever changes mid route, but it happens so little I couldn’t bring to my mind when it has done so. It definitely wants to take different routes and exits than Garmin. Which isn’t a bad thing most of the time, it’s just s different way of doing it that isn’t a wrong way to go about it. I bought a Garmin OTR810 and the new map download feature is nice. If you are not looking at Trucker Path or Google in your trip planning, if connected to a hot spot, it will download a Google image of the area of your chosen destination so you can see a real world Ariel view so you can better see/choose the correct place to enter. But Trucker Path is still king for that. Ultimately I don’t think you can go wrong with either Garmin, RM or TP. I personally run all 3 simultaneous.

I did a pre-trip route check but I didn’t want to miss an important exit so I just followed what the GPS told me lol unfortunately. Thanks again 🤙

They were good. It’s been a year and half since I drove for them. I was part of their “over the road” division. We made more than mileage plant drivers cuz we stayed in hotels every night for 5-6 weeks at a time and they get to go home. From what I understand, plant drivers make between 70-80k. I was just over 100k. Again, from what I understand, the new trucks they’re getting in have all the safety bells and whistles including driver facing cameras that detect and beep if you don’t move your eyes or head periodically which would be very annoying. That’s info from my buddy who still drives for them.

Garmin is more simple with less on the screen whereas RM is a bit busier with more info on the screen…I prefer the RM in that aspect. There are 2 things Garmin has that RM doesn’t and that’s the ability to drag or edit your route which can be really nice and it will automatically recognize a slow down in traffic and suggest an alternate route (if there is one)(have to be connected to your phone via the Garmin app). If RM had those 2 features, I’d recommend them hands down. Even without them, I prefer RM. Hope that helps

The routing should always route you around tunnels that are less than 13’6” regardless of this being toggled on or off, that’s one of the features that make it a trucking GPS (also good for large RV’s). NOTE: it is NOT always accurate!! I have been routed onto a road with a low bridge before that it didn’t know was there. The companies play that game too. 75% of the drivers going to orientation, the same one you went too, will not be there in 2 years. Since l got my CDL in 2006 l have worked for 11 trucking companies. Getting ready to go out with another one in a few weeks. Drive for 6 months, give notice, clean out the truck, take 5 months off and repeat. While l drive l put as m7ch money away as possible for the 5 months. I am sure most drivers do the same.

You’re welcome. Sat too much between loads, low pay, annoying 6 digit code you have to enter every time you start the truck. If you needed to be out of your truck for more than 5 days, they made you clean your truck out (regardless of how long you were out on the road) I’m with a small company called ICX. They’re the OTR decision of the parent company called Gully. Great company and great pay but hard to get on cuz they have limited trucks.

Gully is out of Quincy, Illinois and runs Midwest regional. ICX is out of Willingboro, New Jersey and runs primarily east of I35 and south of I80 but does have occasional runs to the west coast. It’s about 30-40% hazmat (no tankers)

Ok I was curious because I was thinking about buying this or just using my iPad and download a truck routing gps. Because other than the gps and dash cam it seems to be a basic android tablet?

Correct. Do not buy this thinking it will function well as a tablet as well.

That works too. The few apps I sampled I wasn’t impressed with. No matter what you go with, always double check the route it’s telling you to go once you get off the interstates with Google maps satellite and street views. None of them are perfect

@@RushinTruckin just for taking pics n video of a crash or something basic rand gps with a case.. runs android and they say it's a tablet.. but doesn't use playstore rand app store has fk all.. so hardly a tablet... idk what exactly defines this price point..it's just a basic rand gps with internet capabilities... hardly a tablet

Exactly, DEF not worthy of being labeled or used as a tablet. The price point, imo, is for the screen real estate that’s pretty much it. The processor works very quick and smooth so there’s that, too.

@RushinTruckin I agree it is a very good choice.. rand n Garmin.. are both competitive.. not much difference, accept functionality.. or how to manipulate commands to do the same thing...

@RushinTruckin but if you look at the capabilities for the overdryve... and overdryve being cheaper I don't get what you're paying for a couple inches doesn't seem to justify the cost especially compared to the features... overdryve has dash cam same operating Sirius xm elog compatible etc
