10 Iconic Funk Beats (Hannah Welton)

Hannah Welton thinks every drummer should have these 10 funk beats in their arsenal.
You may already know these songs, but have you tried learning them on drums? As the former Prince drummer says, funk has a certain irresistible feel. It emerged during a time in history with political hardships and tension, and you can hear how artists like James Brown used the musical style to make a statement and an impact we can still feel decades later.

    Garibaldi does it for me. Right now I play in a country, beach, pop cover band but I sure do miss Cameo, The Bar Kays, Sly, The Crusaders, Donald Byrd and the Blackbirds, Morris Day, James Brown, obviously Tower of Power, Superstrut by Eumir Deodato and a host of others. As usual, I am the odd one out among my old age peer group but I was the odd one as a teen too. One minute it was Locomotive Breath by Tull and the next it was Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Weather Report, Marshall Tucker, Santana, Pat Martino, ABB, etc. And yet, the most FUN I ever had playing was funk. When at home, that is what I turn to when I want to feel good about being an old ass drummer.

    These classic beats are on fire. She is one of my favorite drummer who got me into incorporating funk beats and apply it to metal music. I had my neighbors called me a funky death metal blast beater. I just like to combine death metal drum stuff and funk beats. Rick Latham and Hannah is my funk drum idol. All these details she give and how it plays were incredible and easy to understand and play. It’s fun. Not saying it’s pretty easy or anything. It takes time to learn some parts. I also love using funk beat to play anime themed songs or Japanese pop music besides blast beating and speeding things up just for musical taste and experimentation. Literally called my own drumming style Extreme Technical funking death metal.

    1. 8:05 "The sweet spot between not to straight and not too swung" I seriously need a whole video about that! (Also in other beats.) 2. 11:39 Playing slightly sloppy makes it funky. Interesting! Again, I'd like to hear this demonstrated (perfect & rigid vs. sloppy & funky) 3. 15:09 Once you've got the basic groove, you can change up the pattern from time to time. That's interesting to me.

    PLEASE don't forget to go back & mention (credit) the names of the drummers who played on these monumental Funk recordings. The contemporaries in the Classic Rock world are QUICK & consistent in crediting & honoring Niel Peart (Rush), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Stewart Copeland (The Police), Alex Van Halen (Van Halen), Steve Smith (Journey) Terry Bozzio (Missing Persons, Frank Zappa), Tommy Allridge (Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne), Ringo Starr (The Beatles), etc., etc when the Classic Rock genre of drumming is mentioned. The exact same code of honor & respect should be given to Clyde Stubblefield & Jabo Starks (James Brown), Zigaboo Modeste (The Meters), Lanise Hughes (Rick James), "Diamond" (The Ohio Players), Walter Orange (The Commodores), Tyrone Lampkin (Parliament-Funkadelic), Micheal B. & John Blackwell (Prince), Ricky Lawson (studio sessions), "Jellybean" Johnson (The Time) & all other Funk/R&B/Soul drummers who got lost in the shadows of The Great Dennis Chambers & The Great Bernard Purdie! PLEASE do a second video giving name recognition/credits to these drummers. In addition, some classic funk jams that I would like to see covered by Hannah "Lady Cab Driver" - Prince "Skin Tight" - The Ohio Players "Love Rollercoaster" - The Ohio Players "Flirt" - Cameo "Shake & Dance With Me" - Confunkshun "Dance Floor" - Roger Troutman & Zapp "Mary Jane" - Rick James "Cut The Cake" - The Average White Band "School Boy Crush" - The Average White Band "Slippin Into Darkness" - WAR "Big Payback" - James Brown "Knee Deep" - Funkadelic "Brick House" - The Commodores "Cissy Strut" - The Meters "Dancing Machine" - The Jackson 5 "Le Freak" (Freak Out) - Chic *ALL great Funk throwback selections with serious grooves & pockets for drummers who seriously want to study Funk rhythms. Beautiful presentation by a talented drummer. Around 13:10, the last bar, the triplet 8th-notes should have a dot after the first. That makes it 6 16ths = 3 8th-notes. As notated now, it has only 5 16th-notes.

  • @ryandrums2112

    @ryandrums2112

    Жыл бұрын

    I think the beaming is just misleading. The first 2 notes form one sixteenth triplet (one eighth which takes up two thirds of a sixteenth triplet, plus the last sixteenth triplet note). This takes up the first eighth note of beat 3. Then the last note of that clump is the second eighth note of beat 3.

  • @Histgyph

    @Histgyph

    Жыл бұрын

    The first note is an 8th note triplet, with the bass drum playing the 3rd and 4th 16th note triplets, so that’s not the problem. The note on the fourth partial is held for 3 16th note triplets, so if anything it should be the last one being dotted. The problem though, is that having one be dotted and not the other would be more confusing, especially when sightreading, and having either of them dotted would be more confusing because your hands are playing the same rhythm they have been the whole time. Technically you’re right the notation could be considered rhythmically incorrect, but it’s easier to read than it would be if it was “rhythmically correct”, and being easier to read is a lot more important. Drumset notation is weird, but in this case, we all understand what it’s trying to tell us, so it’s doing it’s job.
