10-Day Water Fast: Stunning Results!

In December I did a 10-day water-only fast at True North Health in Santa Rosa, California. It was a great experience. (Correction, my Apo-B number came down 28%, not 16% as I said in the video.)

That was a very enlightening video. As an almost vegan, I have eggs once a week from my own chickens, I too overindulged over the holidays and have been fighting to get off those 4 pounds. I’ve gone back to healthy eating but struggling to lose the weight. I’m 65 and run/weight train and sometimes you just assume that you’ll remain healthy but there’s always seems to be the need to keep tweaking our diets. I really appreciate the video, it’s such an inspiration to NOT quit!

Thanks for such a great video and sharing your personal experience. I have been on a similar journey to get me numbers down. I have a family history of CVD, losing my father when I was just 9. (He was just 48) Unfortunately, I didn't realize the impact of diet until later in life. However, at 63 YO, with the help of low-dose statin, have lowed by cholesterol to 132 and LDL and ApoB to 70 ish. (Total cholesterol was 280+) Long journey, mostly following things I have learned from people like you, Dr Esselyton, Dr Greger . . . For what it is worth, I did add a daily does of Amla powder in the form of tea, (also occasionally add to smoothies or salad dressing) about three months ago and believe it has helped considerably to lower my cholesterol. Maybe something that could help you too, but in any case I don't see any side effects. Best to you in your journey! Ronny

So many follow a junk food vegan diet. Some do it consciously, while others are fooled by marketing or make restaurant food the norm. I follow a low fat vegan diet, and have to make sure I don’t lose too much weight. At 54 I don’t want to lose my muscle mass. You get your muscle from exercise, but it is hard to get it back once it’s gone. I would definitely recommend getting a yearly physical. I have an 89 year old friend that entertained alternative medicine. She created a ton of debt for herself, and wasn’t being treated for her hypertension. I had her go to a doctor. She was properly diagnosed, and is now being treated and monitored. Temporary solutions provide temporary results. Avoid junk food. Most restaurant food is junk food. Exercise should be simple but doable. Get an annual physical. People end up in nursing homes when they can’t take care of themselves. Be thankful if they have space when you need one. A lot of states don’t have availability.

Jeff, thanks a lot for sharing with us this helpful information. It comes as surprise to find that your blood pressure and cholesterol is too high despite being on low fat plant based diet for many years. I do not find it reasonable that slight junk food (include bread) can make such huge different. What will happen if you switch the SAD diet? Do you believe that there could be another explanation that is nto related to diet? Is it possible to investigate these values with Dr. Mcdougall and Caldwell Esselstyn? The blood pressure might be partially explained by extra salt in the diet. I am raising this point because the plant based community believes that once we follow low fat low salt vegan diet, the cholestrol and blood pressure must be very low. Once again, I appreciate the video you share with us

I told him I want to tweak my diet and see if I could change the numbers that way first. It seems that by cutting back on the nuts and seeds by 80-90% cutting back on the small amount of olive oil that I was using by the same amount and staying away from processed foods all the time instead of once and a while and instead of three meals I eat 2 good meals a day and sometimes 2 good meals and a snack the numbers are back to where they should be. If 1 in 5 of his patients has elevated LP(a) (as is the case in the general public), and if they've been fine all these years by following his program, that suggests lifestyle definitely trumps genes here. Very thin people have done this water fast safely, many times. True North monitors BMI to be sure you are not losing muscle mass, and re-feeds everyone slowly, safely and heartily. it does take a few to several weeks to get back to your pre-fasting weight, but it can be done safely with an SOS diet including legumes, sweet potatoes, avocados and a limited daily intake of nuts and seeds, around one quarter cup. If you are interested, fill out the questionnaire and go through the free screening interview with Director Alan Goldhamer. First of all they recommend you quit coffee, if you're doing it (I was, and I was over-doing it!), quit it a week or two before you start the fast. So that you're not going through caffeine withdrawl while starting the fast. I didn't have any headaches or even any particularly strong hunger. Usually by the third day that all recedes. They are constantly monitoring you, taking vitals, checking on you, testing if you have any issues, and they will break some people from the fast, maybe give them broth for a few days, then resume water only. But it's very individual. I had zero problems, felt fine the whole time, a little light headed if I stood up too fast, but no headaches or problems. There were others there who DID experience a rough fast at times, and they have a lot of strategies for that, including drinking warm or hot water, rather than room temperature, and they are testing electrolytes and so on. But I've done some short fasts, this longer one fortunately was pretty much a breeze in terms of how I felt. These guys are pros though, and have seen/dealt with it all. Also, I have a friend who had done juice fasts in the past, she went to do a 10 day fast - but stopped after three days because she vomited. True North is great - there's also a fasting doc who was trained there and now lives in the LA area who does fasting work via phone, so he supervises people doing it at home, and when you have questions or need to have bloodwork ordered, he does that remote and monitors using zoom. There's a True North MD who does remote fasting, Justin Wise, MD. See: www.healthpromoting.com/clinic-services/health-services/coaching-services And the MD who was trained there and does remote fasting from Orange County is Nate Gershfeld MD. www.fastingescape.com/program-details I will do a followup in 3 months after I re-take bloodwork, and will talk about people having problems fasting and how True North helps those people.

I dropped my BP from 140/90 to 105/70 in 18 months of WFPB SOS free and keep it there (started Apr 2020). Weight down from 68 kgs to 60 kgs on a 2100 cal/day , 170 cm height. Lack of salt (low Cl) can cause low stomach acid and negative effects. My lipids went down just a little (TC to 195, LDL to 115, TG went up 150-210), HbA1c from 5,8 to 5,2. Lp(a) is low 8,6 mg/dL but ApoB high 98 mg/dL (after 3 years of WFPB SOS free). Since Aug 2023 (last blood tests) next step is increase healthy fats from 30 g/day. Eliminate sweet fruits like bananas and apples. And also oats to try to get TG down. Include some salt for improving stomach acid production and avoid low BP (mornings like 95/65). Water fasts on Paleo-ish diet (no processed foods) did not prevent high BP. PS. New results - TC - 172, LDL - 100, HDL - 56, TG - 66?!?!, ApoB - 89, VitB12 - 699, BG - 91, HbA1c - 5,2%. This after adding salt, seeds, and more nuts. Eliminated oats, bananas, and generally consuming very few fruits. Calories the same.

I prepare all my food and I do not mind tweaking diet because I am not fancy about food. I do not exercise a lot - some walking, pushups, pullups, stationary bike, similar stuff, not nearly enough, but my calories are not so much hence the weight reduction. The scientific evidence is pretty conclusive that low cholesterol as a result of genetic predisposition, a healthy diet/lifestyle. or prescription drugs delivers lower mortality and morbidity compared to higher cholesterol. The issue is confused by the fact that a number of diseases and traumas from various cancers, liver diseases, infections, Alzheimer's, sepsis, etc cause cholesterol to decline. ".... results of a recent meta-analysis10 of cause-specific mortality (including unpublished data on noncardiovascular causes of death) from 10 large cohort studies and 2 international studies that concluded that reduced serum cholesterol is not related to excess mortality among cohorts of employed individuals, whereas population-based studies did show a relationship. The investigators proposed that the discrepancy in results was probably due to a higher frequency of risk factors associated with low cholesterol, eg, alcohol abuse and ill health, in population-based study samples compared with employed cohorts." circ.ahajournals.org/content/92/9/2365.full

That's what happened. Surveys with hospital deaths shows an association with lower cholesterol levels and higher death rate. Why? Because people in the hospital dying of cancer and other conditions, don't eat much, lose weight, their cholesterol drops as they get closer to death. Hence, low cholesterol has no causative role in their death, but it's a symptom of someone very unhealthy who is on death's door. In terms of heart disease in the general population dying of heart attacks, high cholesterol is absolutely associated with higher risk of stroke, heart attack and death.
