Let's be honest here. The vast majority of the Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies cartoons, unedited, would be banned today. I watched those cartoons growing up and let me tell you! Those were some wild creations. The violence of the Road Runner alone was epic.

When I was in Rio, two of the women from my group found a dead body in an alley. So, the Tourist Board of Rio de Janeiro taking offense at the Simpsons kinda strikes me as propaganda, because that episode was perfectly accurate.

Yeah, favelas in Brazil are no joke. I've visited three times and only go into the favela if I have no electronics or jewelry and am with close family in the car. I don't dare walk through them because of the mafias and other crap in those areas. Most of Brazil is pretty chill, especially the country side.

It didn't even have children. Not until a few seasons later and they barely even mattered on the show. it was always what the adult characters were going through. It was when they started playing it in the daytime and selling things like Flintstones vitamins and Pebbles cereal that it started being marketed towards children. Seems to happen all too much: animation meant for all ages begins being marketed as a children's franchise and that stigma stays forever. It happened with Looney Tunes, then the Flintstones, and now the Simpsons. + Sorry, I'm passionate about animation as an art form, and not just a kiddie funtime -commercial- show.

I watched the original Tom and Jerry shorts as a child and loved them. Showed them to nephews and nieces and they loved them too, so much so they wanted them on again. Regarding originals that are racist, if they’re banned, all you’re doing by banning them is making people curious as to why they’re banned in the first place. (That’s how I discovered the Censored 11 cartoons: I found out about them and got curious as to why they’re banned). You’re actually better releasing them uncut on DVD but for adults and putting a message on the DVD menu/box saying that these attitudes are and always were wrong, but by releasing them, it’s being acknowledged that this was a geninue problem, whilst locking them away denies the problem ever happened. I’m not a psychiatrist but I do know that if something is banned, it just makes people curious as to why it’s banned and also might make them look it up (like me with the Censored 11: it was human curiosity. I wanted to see why they’re banned and I now understand why, but with curiosity, you’re sometimes better getting it satisfied). It’s the same with everything else: a little education and question and answer session as well as looking it up can answer infinite questions. Apologies for my “lecture”.

An episode like that I think kids SHOULD see, (especially if their parents are gun owners) because it teaches kids what could happen if they play around with guns. I don't think kids should be 100% sheltered from that kind of topic. It was an important message about a serious issue that is unfortunately still far too relevant today. It was a great episode in a great show. Also, it's one thing to tell kids they shouldn't play with guns, which is important, but that episode of Gargoyles SHOWED them the potential consequences by having a hero of the show accidentally seriously injuring another hero of the show because they were innocently playing around. It was shocking but it drove the message home in a way that would stick far better than a typical PSA on gun safety.

As for the Gargoyles episode, I watched that with my nephew and it scared him as I have guns. While my wifes' family dislikes guns greatly the episode offered an opening for us to have a serious talk about guns which I believe was the main reason for the episode. We all did agree that the show was very well done and we would have never had a running conversation about it for years. It helps to feel comfortable asking questions of someone you know will just answer them to the best of their ability with no politics or agenda behind the answers.

Shiro Zidori, - I was born and raised around guns as I grew up in the countryside of South Texas. With coyotes attacking livestock and possums eating the chickens and eggs as well as the water moccasins, rattlesnakes, and copperheads a gun was very much needed. Now, I live in North Texas and still love living in rural areas so snakes can still be a problem. As I'm in a wheelchair running away is not possible, so a gun is still needed. I'm not a collector, just a practical user that mostly uses an over-under shotgun loaded with rock salt. It does the job and it doesn't kill much of anything other than close-range snakes. Coyotes are still a small problem so the rocksalt stings them but won't seriously hurt them. Just keeps them away. As far as trespassers, the worst thing I had to deal with was a couple of teens looking for a place to make out. They saw me, my chair, and the gun and froze. I gave them an hour to get off my property... I was once a teen too. :-D

Lots of old cartoons reflect the social standards (of the animators or studios) at the time. Older Loony Toons shown in the 90's and later were edited to remove the acts of violence, at which point they made no sense. The Flintstones cigarette cartoon was from 1961 not 1971. The show was originally broadcast at night with an adult audience in mind so advertising cigarettes would have been the norm. When the show moved to Saturday Morning fare the cigarette commercials were ended.

Back in the 60s, the Flintstones was prime time, geared toward older viewers, much like The Simpsons. The Winston commercial didn't get banned per se (until the general ban on cigarette commercials like you mentioned). No, it was simply that after Welch's took over as the sponsor (thus Pebbles's love of grape juice), Winston had no reasonable expectation that the Flintstones would still show their ad. No sponsorship and moola? No plugging your product either in a commercial or with product placement.

It's the opposite in some cases. My (now former) teacher actually believes we've become desensitized. Like, me and my friends would tell jokes that would get you in deep trouble back then. It especially prominent in video games. Where as games like Mortal Kombat influenced the creation of the ESRB and stirred up controversy, we have games today like Life is Strange, God of War and GTA V that have such acts as kidnap, torture, excessive violence, acts that would be considered domestic terrorism, and a lot more. Personally, if anything, we've only grown less offended.

I do think there's a line, though; I really don't think kids need to be "challenged" by ideas that are blatant racism like the Censored Eleven or see things like characters shooting other characters depicted in realistic detail. I agree censorship is a problem, but there's better ways to discuss stuff like that, you know? If I want kids to learn about race, I'd probably show them My Pal Martin; if I want them to learn about gun safety there's Eddie Eagle for that. Banning Fritz the Cat and Donald Duck in Der Fuherer's Face is stupid though. They were never meant as kids stuff; they were meant to satirize certain concepts, and we're never gonna get over these being considered problems until we learn that cartoons are not necessarily just for kids. Another film in this vein is Ralph Bakshi's Coonskin, I'd look into it if you're curious. It also has a long history of misunderstood censorship when it's actually a satire of racial relations in the 60's using the backdrop of modified Bre'er Rabbit stories.

Stereotypes tout certain aspects (which often ARE NOT true, but assumed) to ridicule the stereotyped. You do not see stereotypes of dominant cultures, but of immigrant and minority groups, because dominant groups control the narrative. People are upset because stereotypes stress negative aspects of the people, places or things stereotyped. Caricature and stereotype go hand in hand. Cartoons rely on both for their humor. And frankly, many period films from the '30s and '40s did too. (The role of Lois Lane in the color Max Fleischer Superman cartoons from the '40s is fascinating.) So, if you're banning cartoons, ban films. Personally, knowing the history of the cartoons and films is far better and leads to discussion and comparison.

About the Flinstones/Winston thing, The Flinstones wasn't originally intended to be a children's cartoon. It was originally a take on The Honeymooners, which was family friendly (at least by today's standards) but meant more for adults. Pebbles only came about to capitalize on the controversy of Lucille Ball's on-screen pregnancy, as it occurred in an era where you couldn't say the word pregnant on TV, let alone show a pregnant woman. It didn't enter the realm of "children's programming" until the 80s. All of the stuff that was controversial during the first run was standard fare by then and in the 80s animation had gotten the reputation of being a child's medium. If it was hand drawn and didn't feature nudity it was considered childish regardless of its original intent. The same thing holds for early Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. They were theatrical shorts shown before the feature presentation. As such they had to appeal to adults as well as children, so it can't really be said that they were strictly children's cartoons. That didn't really happen until the 60s when they started making them specifically as a Saturday morning cartoon. The best way to think about it is that, given the sensibilities of the era, The Flinstones were closer to being the Family Guy of the era than Scooby Doo, and the Warner Brothers cartoons were basically a mixed bag. Mindless slapstick for the kids, parodies and double entendre for the parents.

I just don’t understand it. A lot of these are cartoons that we, our parents, and their parents used watch as kids and we all grew up just fine. Yet somehow parents have became more sensitive and the censors have became much stronger.

The Gargoyles episode might have gone too far with the violence, but it tackled the issue with an even-handedness and maturity that I have yet to see matched in most other media. They weren't saying "guns are dangerous and they should be banned", they were saying "guns are dangerous, and they need to be treated with respect."

The Flintstones never was meant for children, That's why it was shown at night. Again Ren and Stimpy was not a children's show. You're falling into the typical American mindset that animation is for children. It seems only in America does this mindset occur. The rest of the world uses animation as an art form for all ages, depending on subject matter.

In the olden days cigarettes weren't known to be very bad. In fact, at one point they were reccomend to pregnant women for morning sickness. I'm not surprised that they were advertised on a cartoon.

Might I add that Tom and Jerry was never intended for children. They were short films, and back in the day only adults went to the theaters unlike nowadays where mostly younger people go to the theaters.
