These Mr. Magoo Cartoons BANNED For 35+ YEARS (Protests)

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to DoYouRemember? I’m Nostalgic Nick. Mr. Magoo was an elderly curmudgeon who wouldn’t let an extreme case of myopia prevent him from doing the things he enjoyed, such as cooking, driving, and rooting for Rutgers. Charlie, his live-in servant, never left his side and seemed to be a big part of the reason why he lived to such an advanced age. But the cartoon was full of ethnic stereotypes, and The National Federation for the Blind even passed an official resolution condemning and deploring the 1997 film starring comedy legend Leslie Neilsen.

@@leet7489No, people have become too thin skinned. They take offense at EVERYTHING, even when they KNOW no offense was meant. And BESIDES, these SAME people are THEMSELVES pushing racial stereotypes that are JUST as racist as anything from the past..... they're just doing so about WHITE people. But nobody Today is complaining about WHITE stereotypes, or bigotry against white people. Why? Because they're WHITE. If that isn't the definition of racism, I don't know what could be. The double standards need to STOP. Either it's offensive no matter WHO it's aimed at, or it's ACCEPTABLE no matter who it's aimed at. Only THEN will there TRULY be equality. If you want to know who's TRULY in control, take a good look at who you can't criticize without retaliation..... THAT'S who is REALLY in control. Food for thought.🤔

And since cartoon characters exist in the world that they think exists (you can run off the side of a cliff and keep going if you don’t look down) Magoo’s nearsighted vision can be seen as a superpower because it shields him from the fear of real dangers.

My favorite Mr. Magoo film is the Hotsy Footsy. Magoo goes to the Rutgers Alumni party and draws his friend Charlie’s wife Frances as his partner. She hides and he, thinking he is going to the dance floor, winds up at a wrestling match where he wrestle Francis the terrible, I’ll never forget the sight (no pun intended) of Mr. Magoo bouncing of the ropes and winding up on the wrestler’s back, dancing the jitter bug. People aren’t laughing at Magoo for something he can’t help. He’s not blind, he’s nearsighted and it is inferred that he could see if he wore glasses but he’s too vain, proud or just can’t concede that he isn’t right about everything.

You SHOULD have mentioned Mr Magoo's Storybook, where each episode dramatized a classic novel, with Magoo playing one of the main characters(and playing it STRAIGHT!) An interesting method of enticing kids to actually READ the story portrayed; at the end of each show, there was a blurb for kids to "visit your local library"

Mr. Magoo aired in the 1970s when I was a kid attending elementary school. Never once did I or other kids think the character represented anyone but himself; just as we knew one teacher was "nice" and another was "mean". However, society did indeed seem to think people in wheelchairs needed to be spoken to more loudly or more slowly, which we know better today. The issue is that in my schools growing up, there was a special classroom dedicated to the deaf and blind students. Many of us knew those students personally as friends, and it was through this exposure that we learned the actual reality of those students. We asked questions and learned, but today such things would be "politically incorrect" and "offensive". It wasn't though, because we were friends as kids who explored each other's humanity and life, as kids do. Mr. Magoo was pretty much irrelevant to all of it, and as a kid I didn't "get it" where the cartoon was concerned, it was not entertaining.

12:34 I loved Mr. Magoo. I grew up in the 70s and mostly remember the cartoons being shown after the afternoon movie and before the evening news. I think he was just going about his own business, not bothering anybody. He read signs wrong and went about his way. He only became annoyed if he thought someone got in his way or they tried to re-direct him to keep him from harming himself or others. He laughed at himself if he realized he was just being silly. At the end of the cartoon he'd say Oh Magoo, you've done it again ! I just watched the cartoons, but didn't sit there picking it apart asking is he being racist or offending the vision impaired or whatever. It's a CARTOON. People need to quit being so sensitive over a cartoon.

I found my old Mr. Magoo comic book a few years ago, I remember it being from the early 80's, maybe the comics themselves were actually from the 70's, though. As soon as I saw Charlie ny jaw dropped. I forgot about that. And the weird part is that he was portrayed in a sympathetic way. No offence was intended, unlike a lot of other sterotyped characters I remember from other cartoons, for example, Japanese portrayed as villians as late as the 50's. I think they meant well with this character, but didn't realize that the blatant stereotypes would be offensive....and WOW! They totally are offensive when you see it now.

Because I remember watching them in 1970s, And Charlie was very prominent with his appearance and terrible accent. I liked Charlie, his devotion to Magoo was so great he'd go with him no matter what crazy and difficult things it put him through. "I like mustard, buster!" Pow! Not sure I understand what the NFB had against him. Magoo might have technically been blind, but he could obviously see well enough to function, even if he didn't see clearly. Being offended doesn't give someone the right to have things banned.

If Chuck Jones was so contemptuous of "the so-called UPA school," why did his Warner Bros. cartoons emulate it so much? Why did he (and his wife) write the script for UPA's second feature "Gay Purr-ee"? Cholly (that's how it's spelled in the model sheet) may not be the most politically advanced character by contemporary standards, but at least he wasn't the villain like the ethnic stereotypes in the Dick Tracy cartoons UPA was making at the same time. Anyway, such characters are woke porn: they provide endless amusement for uptight liberals (as opposed to the other kind who can accept these cartoons as relics of an unchangeable past, or ignore them altogether) who get their jollies being offended and seeking admiration and congratulation for pointing out "racist" content.

Cartoons from teh 50 and 60's were the greatest. Cartoons today suck because you can't have humor now. I see a lot of similarities between McGoo and Biden.

Political correctness is like Mr Magoo blindfoldly lacking a funny bone and sadly single minded in a sad way ! Why must everyone cater to sad people looking for a bus to jump on ? Go home and yell at a coatrack and leave the rest of us alone !

So, humor isn't one of the senses that is enhanced in the absence of sight. The sign for Democrat and the sign for stupid are the same, so the deaf seem to have enhanced humor. 🤔

Grow a spine. It’s comedy. If you can’t laugh at yourself, you’ve lost at life.
