The fact that he did research and actually knows a few things about Greek history is amazing. Also tip from a local: don't limit your trip only in central roads... you should explore the area through smaller pathways and visit small shops with a more homey vibe for an authentic Greek experience

I appreciate your narration... As Greek I am I can tell you've done a good research and it was accurate. Try travel in the main land of Greece or on islands that not known by foreigners. Examples: mainland... Ioannina, Drama, Kavala, Delfoi etc. Islands: Skopelos, folegandros, Samothrace, Dilos (it's an ancient site), Ithaca (kind Odyssea's island), Patmos (where you'll find the cave of apocalypse...where Saint John wrote the apocalypse - Bible) Etc. Anafiotika Neighborhood is next to Plaka and is one of the most ancient and the most beautiful neighborhoods in Athens! Give it a try and go! It's like a greek island! And you can see the view of Athens because is pretty high- on the Acropoli's feet!

You can thank Mark Wiens for making the Diporto restaurant such a touristy place. He made a video of Greek food in Athens and he visited and documented the restaurant

Been to Athens. Dirty place. They were even selling a 'Vickers' machine gun at a street market. Went up the 'vehicular railway' and the first thing I saw was a 'BIG MAC' sign.

It was obv an antique or a non functional weapon.You cannot buy real guns here let alone on the street.Besides the "Big Mac and the dirt" there other more important and beautiful things to notice in Athens.It's a pitty you wasted that opportunity,along with your money and time.Maybe next time(if that happens) find a local to show you around and give you some tips.

Sad to hear about that, but if it happens that you go back there here are some alternatives how to enjoy better and unknown corners of athens, atiko alsos and tourkovouna , good alternative to lykavitos because you avoid tourist crowds , have also a 360s wiew of athens, and a cofee shop much more cheaper and good one, hallandri, very cool neighbourhood with many good restaurants and a much more chilling vibe, if you like hiking mount ymittos is nice place to go ( not accessible in summer because of fire concerns) , faliro Bay and its promenade along with the new national library/opera with a green roof garden , also go to piraeus mikrolimano is worth it , kiffisia suburb is also pretty, as for nigth life gazi and glyfada entry is at 5 € that count one drink of your choice with it at almost any club, exarcheia and metarxourgio if you love big street art murals, unfortunaly it s true athens lacks descent parks, kolonaki is also a nice place to be but is a bit expensive, for nice street food you can also go to panormou ave , the east neighbourhoods with the 1o nekrotafeio athinon ( ok not the most nice place to be cause it's a cemetery) but it have sculptural masterpieces and the neighbourhood surrunding it isn t that bad, take also your time to get lost in the stoas ( closed allyways) and you migth get surprise of what some of them are hiding inside, you can also visit the oaka olympic complex ( take the green line direction kiffisia ) as during your trip it becomes more safer and less crowded going north, and so much more ... if you go with assumption of athens being like Rome then it's normal to be disapointed but i asure you that nowdays they are making efforts in the city to be more clean and enjoyable just take more than week as i presume you stayed shortly to maybe go elsewhere, but give it again a shot and go see the other parts of the city as it is huge cause it s true that the city center near omonia is crap, also forgot to mention that all the graffitis near thissio and the historical site have been cleaned last mounth. Athens is a city you can Love or hate, weirdly enougth i hate it and love it at the same time.

@@Sonasic your probably right Chris. Although having said that we did visit a variety of other place. I suppose first impression stick in your mind. But hey ho we enjoyed our visit and we can scratch it off our bucket list.
