IF there is an uptick in covid cases due to civil unrest, or we can't even GET TO the store, or in case of natural disaster we ALL need an extended pantry. I feel so much better that I put a small one together for myself - I am a widow and I do have 2 sons but do not want to place undue burden on them or anyone nor do I want to depend on govt.

I live in California, so I've always had a rotated pantry in case of a disaster. My house pantrys are stocked and so is our trailer. Also my mom lived through the depression and taught me to cook with very little. We were poor so I guess it was an easy lesson to learn. Lessons that have come in really handy. I cooked a meal for 8 and only spent $15. I wish the best to you. Have a nice day.

Will eating rancid food make you sick... also... can you eat rice that has been contaminated by rodents if you rince it off...

@@ronaldstarkey4336 Eating rancid food might not make you sick. But the nutrients are altered by rancidity; some say it can cause cancer. I'm sure that eating something rancid once by accident wouldn't harm you, but I wouldn't do it on a regular basis.. That's why it's best to store white rice instead of brown, whole wheat berries instead of ground, etc. Anything with fat can go rancid if not properly preserved. Except coconut oil; it has a very long shelf life. As far as mice...I'm not sure, because you do boil it. But they carry so many diseases I personally wouldn't try it; I would be afraid that urine/germs would have permeated the kernels.

Everyone should make their own vanilla. A nice bottle, 3 split beans topped off with a good quality plain Vodka. You simply top it off from time to time and it lasts forever. It takes about 6 months of sitting before you can use it. I bought my beans on EBay for about $2 each for top quality grade A bourbon vanilla beans. I make them as gifts for Christmas. Everyone loves this!

With regards to canned goods, I had 6 cans of minced clams that were 7 years past the use by date. I decided to open one and knew I would know whether it was "bad" with the first twist of the can opener. Not only did everything smell fine, the liquid was still clear, didn't get cloudy, and the clams were the regular color. So, I opened three of the cans and made a batch of clam chowder. 😊

Wow! This was such an informative visit with you today. I often go back to some of your older videos just for refreshment on some subject I might be thinking about. I have friends here at my Adult Apt. Complex that have never done any gardening or canning and are constantly throwing out perfectly good foods. It breaks my heart to see the waste and I often tell them I'll take it and use it. Just a few days ago, I was able to make your quick sweet pickles with cucumbers that were going to be thrown away. What a great save. Last week it was fresh, dirty beets from the garden. Most didn't want to bother taking time to wash and use them so I canned Harvard Beet and shared them with friends here. I'm being called the Chef here now..lol But at one time before farming, I did own 2 restaurants.

Nichole Moody, thanks babe! I “have been taught” and understand the concept of rotating stock. It’s about being prepared. I don’t use bottled water, as one example, however I kept a case on hand in case of an emergency. I threw it out because it expired. It wasn’t necessary to discard it, I have now learned from Mary. Nothing to do with rotating stock. I like to keep canned chicken on hand, in case of emergency, however I usually cook fresh or frozen. It’s not always about rotating stock, FYI. :)

Eventually my dad was transferred to Southern California. Again we kept an extended pantry because of earthquakes. I have never not had an extended pantry. It certainly has been a bit of a challenge to replace some items because of the virus. I am certainly glad that this has been a life long process.

Thanks for sharing. Daniel turned 12 recently. He got Angel food cake (It's the only cake he'll actually eat, with all of the others he just licks off the icing) and Rocky Road ice cream. Dad got him a chalk board and white board sided storage box. He already dented the whiteboard side. It had markers, crayons, chalk, some paint, a chalk board eraser, two magnets, and a few sheets of paper inside of it. When I get around to it I will unlock two games on his tablet - Endless ABC (he loves that franchise which has friendly and cute monsters and is educational) and Piggy Bank which is a money counting/sorting one. First need to add the money to my prepaid card. Went to Dad's and Lee fixed where his roof was leaking and mowed his hill. They visited their friends Mary and Charlie yesterday. Lee plans to drop Daniel off at their house while he cuts our grass. Hopefully our yard has dried up enough. It was saturated with water for the past few weeks.

Hi Sweet Mary! I haven't visited in awhile, doesn't mean I don't think about you. I hope you and yours are safe and well. I am! I've been steadily working on building my extended pantry. Being 72 now, and living alone, my pantry can easily extend to feeding my family if it came to that. Given the current situation I'm seeing on grocery shelves, it looks like i'll be making bread again. I joined your newsletter today. Thanks for the free e-book!! Love from WNC, Elizabeth

Mary, Thanks so much for such an information packed video. I think making a log book of what we have on hand and practicing rotation is important to each of the four corner pantries. That way we know what we have and how old it is, and what we need to purchase. Also encourages us to use what we have. I am so thankful that I had a pretty good storage put back and do not have to go to the grocery store very often during this. pandimic time. Still, being 79 and having children and gkids near, I am adding to my storage food and other supplies using your suggestions. We do not know what the future will bring come Fall. Bless you for using your time and talents to help us in so many ways.

My Great Great Grandmother did not drink, but always had whiskey on hand for if someone got sick. 😊 She lived to 97 years old, so I will take that advice. I really enjoyed this video!

Hi Jerin, my mom is just like your grandmother and she is in her mid 90s now! She never drank but she always had a bottle of whiskey on hand for medicinal purposes. Something she would do when she would get back from the dentist was to rinse her mouth out with whiskey. She claimed it killed all the germs that she may have picked up at the dentist. I always found this fascinating. But I’m amazed at how my mother has never had a major illness and has never been hospitalized other than for when she gave birth to me. Be sure to head over to my KZread channel’s home page where I share lots of playlists of videos that I think you will enjoy.
