Instead of the specialized plug follower tool, I used a scrap piece of plumbing copper pipe (3/8 nominal, 1/2" outside diameter). Also available as a plastic tube. Worked perfectly!

Very helpful. I didn't have the special tool so I drilled the plastic follower hole deeper to account for the bar. Worked like a charm.

Will a Schlage "c" kit pins fit into the Defiant lock? I just want to rekey one deadbolt and don't need a complete set of components.

I missed any explanation on how to change the pins. Do you take them all out, put the new key in, then replace the pins till you find the ones that line up flush?

One note to everyone Kwikset pin tumblers do not work with Defiant cores as they are different sizes than Defiant pins.. if you are rekeying Defiant locks get the proper pins for that lock.. then the keying will go smoothly . thank you.

Thanks for the video! It helped. It’s been a while since I’ve done this. I didn’t have the key so I had to rake it open. I was surprised to later find that it had a spool pin in it. I didn’t have the right plug follower, so I had to take the tail piece off. I hope it stays in tact! Seems to be working alright. I ran a bead of solder around the outside. Not ideal, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed. I had to make a shim from a can to get it all back together. I wish I would have done that first, as everything seized up when I took it apart. Took along time to get the bible out and back together. How long do they usually take to fail, if the tail piece has been removed? I’ll be happy even if it only works for a bit. This lock has been out of commission for at least a decade.

Sometimes you get lucky and crimp the tail piece enough. Usually if it fails you'll usually know within a handful of uses. Always best to try it a dozen or so times, then take it apart again and check it.

@@LockandKilo So I just took it apart and improved the strength. The solder had mostly broken off. I kind of expected it would, but a few welds still seemed to hold. Anyways I thought outside the box and used some Nashua stretch and seal silicone tape to solidify it. I cut the tape in half and folded it over. The size was pretty perfect for the tailpiece. I pulled it up and tucked the tape under the riveted part to make sure it holds. This tape is pretty bad ass! It’s weather proof and I’ve used it to hold awkward, much larger items in outdoor antenna installations. After I taped it I could hold the whole lock just by the tail piece. It’s good to go.

@@starluxstudio619 One major factor that comes into play is how much that lock is used. For instance a lock on a front door is most likely used up to 15-20 times per day in some cases, whereas a garage side door lock may only be used once or twice per day. So, depending how often this lock will be used, it can wear out very quickly on this type of repair. However, you succeeded in "smithing" this lock in a way and for that I commend you lol

@@LockandKilo Thank you! Yeah this is for the garage side door. It will probably be used 2-4 times a day max. If it was the front door I would just buy a new lock.

title is a little misleading. very good tips, but i saw no rekeying here. anyone who watches this video, buys a follower set and tries it will be disappointed and frustrated when they realize you need more than just a follower set. you also need a set of different sized pins to try to match the shape of your new key. if you are looking to save money by rekeying it yourself, you are probably out of luck, as rekeying sets can be expensive. if you do it a lot, it maybe worth the $100 or more investment. my thoughts as a noob.

So, this video was originally made for apprentices at a Lock Shop shop who already had the basics down for rekeying a common Kwikset. I never expected this video to be seen by more than those 3 people and in future videos I broke it down into each step. One common question in shops from apprentices is when they get to a Defiant deadbolt, they want to remove the tail piece. This channel started as a way for me to answer their questions and have them refer back to the videos when they were on their own.. eventually I tailored the channel to speak to a broader audience!

This was my very first video and the channel wasn't made at the time for anyone other than an apprentice who knew the rekey process, but not on a Defiant. Usually this is the hard part, but I do have other videos of the rekey process as more and more people found the channel.

All that video did was show how pick down a lock. It didn't show the actual way of rekeying a lock. Just showed an already rekeyed lock.

This video was originally made for Locksmith Apprentices at a Lock Shop who had already rekeyed a standard Kwikset. As they jumped into field work they realized Defiants were much more common here in the states and I made this to show them. I never expected this video to reach as many people as it did and began to speak to a much larger audience in my later videos and explain more in depth and break it down in layman for the common DIYer as well as practicing apprentice.
