I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. By 2000, I did NOT like Gary Payton anymore! He was such a punk, he angered Ruben Patterson, and made Rashard Lewis cry in practice! Everybody knows how he got into it with Vernon Maxwell. Payton said before the season, "This team needs to get more grotto," so they sign Vernon Maxwell, Ruben Patterson, and Greg Foster. Yet, in a locker room practice argument with Vernon Maxwell, where both players picked up DUMBBELLS, Horace Grant (NOT grotto at all), tried to play Peacemaker, and Payton inadvertently hit Horace Grant, when he was trying to throw the dumbbell at Vernon Maxwell! I was rooting for Dallas in 2005-06, ESPECIALLY because I didn't want to see Gary Payton win a ring! If HERSEY HAWKINS and SAM PERKINS complain about you, after playing with you, something IS up!!

A lot of those Sonic teams were overrated....... they should've won at least 1 ring w/ all that talent but just wasn't mentally prepared. I'll never forget them losing to an 8th seed Nuggets team in the 95 playoffs. A year when they killed the Rockets every game but the Rockets won the championship.

@@777bhana What a wasted opportunity, for my Sonics. In 1993-94, that was all on Gary Payton for being such a punk. Ricky Pierce can tell you all about that. In 1994-95 against the Lakers, though, I put that less on Gary Payton, and more on George Karl that season, as he was in a battle of wills with Kendall Gill. George Karl really dicked Kendall Gill. Payton had a broken finger in those playoffs. He made 8/19 free-throws, showing how bad his finger was injured. 1993-94's collapse against Denver was all on Payton, though.

I grew up watching the NBA when Payton was playing and dude was a great player but his mouth was too out of control. Many dudes talked trash and were strategic with it but this dude at times was just a loose cannon.
