1. Historical Setting of the Book of Revelation

THE APOCALYPSE IN SPACE AND TIME: The New Testament book of Revelation was likely written by the Apostle John early in the era of the persecution of Christians under Nero (in spite of the opinion of many that the book originated later under the reign of Domitian). Across the vast Roman empire, Christian people were being targeted for oppression, imprisonment, exile, and death. The church needed a strong message of encouragement, and the book of Revelation provided that message. Chapter 17 of Revelation provides helpful references that can guide our exploration of the precise timing of the book. This introductory lecture examines the historical setting suggested by that chapter. For more free resources, please visit www.brucegore.com.

@@GoreBruce This is how I understand the word "soon" or "near" in certain verses from Revelation 1 such as in verses 1 to 3: "The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants what must soon take place; and he made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. 3 Blessed is he who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written therein; for the time is near." ( REVISED STANDARD VERSION ) I understand that the message was delivered to the very original recipients of the book which were the first-century christians. And that it is unlikely that they were told something like "the message will be more relevant for the last generation of Christians before Christ's second coming. We're not the last generation yet". It is likely they didn't imagine nor expect it that there would be so many generations after them. Of course the time wasn't near for them because nearly 2000 years went by but the end of the world hasn't come till this day. That means the only way that word "soon" or "near" should be understood is from God's perspective. That based on a verse from 2 Peter 3 which says one day for Him is like one thousand years to us.

Bruce You spoke of the harlot city and I was hopeful. You spoke of Hal being wrong and my hope doubled but then you went to Rome and while the history lesson was interesting the narrative reminded me again of Lindsey. You said Revelation left you bewildered and I share that experience with you even at the same time in history we are brothers in time…I was baffled by Revelation and as so many fascinated. I wanted, needed to understand this strange book; and then there was The Late Grate Planet Earth. Countdown to Armageddon, and a third book I can’t remember the title of off hand, I could look it up but it’s not that important. Reading them I finally had clarity… then better equipped I went back to scripture and all that I thought I understood vanished like a morning mist in the sun. I could hold onto understanding as long as I held to the books authored by Hal Lindsey, but what I wanted was clarity of scripture. Stepping from his book back into His book I was just as lost as I had been before. I think you will agree that the point of teaching is to open the mind of the student? To help them think rather than to simply dump dialog on them? If Hal was teaching me then why was I still so mystified with this book? It took many years but I have come to be at peace with Revelation and I want to share this with you. I want to do that because I do see you as a brother. Daniel is not the first prophet to speak on end times but he is one that cannot be ignored. He provides some of the largest sections of the puzzle. When I build a puzzle I start with the edge, and Daniel gives us those pieces to this puzzle. Seventy weeks are appointed unto your people and your holy city ….. There it is the stage has been set. I enjoy the theatre. I have seen some opera, a bit of ballet, stage plays, and I bring this up because while they share similarities, I don’t expect Shakespeare during a performance of the nutcracker. The stage like a puzzle has a defined limit and what is outside is not part. The players depend on the drama or vice versa and Daniel is told and shares the fact that this drama is unfolding in Jerusalem and the story is about his people and that city. Now it is true that Rome played a certain historical part in Jerusalem’s past; it’s like picking up a puzzle peace, looking around to see if it fits, and so does it, if so where? The drama begins with the going forth of the order to rebuild the city. If it was a play and I have been to the passion play in Drumheller Alberta there would be a set. It would be that city at the time of Yeshua’s first coming, and everything would lead up to the climax of the first act. If you were looking at Daniels script what would you say is the climax that takes place on that first set? I would say it must be the entering of the King; and the subsequent crucifixion. Then there would be a scene change. Curtain comes down…intermission. A lot of people don’t read the programs and so they get lost when it comes to opera in particular. If it’s a prophecy of seventy weeks and sixty nine until Messiah comes….what happens to the last week? The curtain is down and they change the set but what is going on while that happens. People go to the bathroom they get a drink have a conversation stretch some smoke….no one thinks that’s part of the play. It is part of the evening of the experience but not the show. What happens in our play called Revelation after the curtain comes down on the first act? The city is sacked raised to the ground, scene change, but it is not part of the play. In the Olivet discourse there are two questions asked and answered. One is concerning end of days and the other of the city and its end. Yeshua answered both but one is Shakespeare and the other the Nutcracker. Understanding the players, the motivations, the setting is key to any drama. Mystery Babylon as an example if seen as Rome changes everything if the alternative is Jerusalem…. I would contended based on the program given it must be Jerusalem and if it is Rome as so many insist then what do you do with the description later that said; in her was found the blood of prophets? 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. You pointed out that Yeshua said Jerusalem kills the prophets and He adds it is not possible that one could be killed outside of that city…. I say Bruce the first act took place in that city and so too will the second act. The ten kings I find interesting because while everybody agrees that the beast we are seeing has ten horns they ignore how we got there…. There were these kings call them the ignored kings/horns and three of them are ripped up by the root? What why? When? Where? No one seems to care they are the ignored kings. Then one rises to power it was this rise that caused three to fall, and then there were ten….. I am guessing you’re a history teacher? We are entering into the realm of maths but they are simple maths if you add one and that equals ten what did you start with (9) If you subtract three and that equals nine what do you start with (12) if the play and players are centered on Israel is 12 a significant number? And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sits. What are we looking at here? The woman is Jerusalem what is this sitting? I see her as raised up, resting on depending on. Further these kings are not only raising her up there is a definite sense that they are in a line of succession… , even he is the eighth, and is of the seven. Did the Caesars of Rome raise up Jerusalem? Incidentally there were already seven and they are currently all dead. When we consider Revelation we should begin by identifying each player, and we should do that, I’m sure you will agree through scripture, not conjecture, not traditions, not by current events. Had the church fathers done so in the beginning and recognized that without a stage you can’t have a play they might have said we don’t know when the end will come but we are sure we need a city of Jerusalem and a temple in that city before it can come. We need a man to take the place of Messiah that is the one we as a nation have been waiting for to be king….to give us the worldly things we want. To enter that temple, Gods house, and lay claim to it along with His city and people. We don’t know when that will happen but the program says this is what the play is about so we do know it is what will happen…..That these same people, Gods people of whom He says I am a Husband, will commit fornication. They will as Yeshua said when one comes in his own name accept him as their king their anointed of God. They will glorify him to the whole world and the world will become drunk on the wine of her fornication…. The play has already been written. The second act is about to begin. Raise curtain what will the set look like? Daniel seven gives us a look at the second act….but this is getting long.

I think Daniel is clear that the culmination of the Messiah coming. That prophecy and vision would end and that a NEW holy place would be ordained, which is Christ. The Temple of his body. The old system would stop forever and be replaced. As a kid I was always taught that the apostolic miracles ended under Nero. Pretty sure that’s settled church dogma for millennia. If that’s the case, then John must write the book before the prophecy and visions ended or Daniel 9:24 becomes a stumbling block.

I would like to point out one little piece of historical data which will support your argument for an early date of the book of Revelation, and it has to do with Domitian. Everyone quotes Ireneaus and gives the book a 90’s date, because obviously that is when Domitian reigned. However (and this is a BIG however), watch this: Domitian’s father was Vespasian. Vespasian is the one who originally laid siege to Jerusalem as general under Nero in A.D. 66. In December of 69 Vespasian was elected Emperor. His eldest son Titus took charge of the Jerusalem seige, while his younger son Domitian resided in Rome. But here is the important point: it took him nearly six months to make his way from Jerusalem and Egypt (where he was securing foodstuff for his soldiers) to Rome. During this half year space, Domitian ruled in the stead of his father! During this six months, Domitian was brutal, exiling many people, establishing harsh persecutions, and generally causing chaos. When his father arrived, he reversed many of Domitian’s orders and restored many exiles to freedom. AND SO - Iranaeus tells us John wrote during the reign of Domitian…and he is correct - during the short 6 months reign of Domitian in A.D. 69/70. After Vespasian’s death, his eldest son Titus ruled, and after his death Domitian came to the throne in his own full right - in 96. But he was there, representing his father - in 69! This changes everything, yes? Details can be found in the Annals of Tacitus. A less trustworthy verification can be found in the wikipedia articles on Vespasian and Domitian.

It was the Roman Philip who lost his wife to Herod Antipas.

As far as I can determine there is no documented record of a death of a Martyr in Pergamum in 95. Not only does Jerusalem sit on 7 hills, which is almost NEVER even brought up, but scripture itself says that mystery babylon is JERUSALEM! that is why it was JERUSALEM who was punished and received the curses in the book of Revelation, which John wrote BEFORE 70AD, as to what was about to happen to the harlot Jerusalem. Yes Rome was a type of harlot, yes the catholic church is a type, but scripture is speaking of Jerusalem. It says it point blank, yet many wont accept it and then return to labeling this upon Rome. Rome was the 4th beast of Daniel. But the iron mixed with clay, was Rome mixing with Israel, in the holy land of Jerusalem.

I'm curious about how he was able to smuggle this book out of prison and what the penalty was if one would be caught doing so. Francis Bacon once said, “Read not to believe and take for granted, nor to contradict and confute, but to weigh and consider.” I have been a Prederist for thirty plus years and I cannot see this book as prophetic (I mean it does not speak of the future). The Revelation of Jesus Christ are the first five words that tell the whole story. To my understanding, it reveals his nature and his work on earth and his permanent reign in the dimension we call Heaven. Rev 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. The same yesterday, today, and forever. The Holy Spirit can only live in an environment of Empathy and Compassion, and Mercy; what we know as Love. We have extra help to stay on his path. Moses fed the tribes the flesh and blood of the villages that they destroyed along the way, including those in Egypt (Exo 12:35; 36). They gave everything they had to spare their lives, that's the real reason they were chased by the Pharaoh. They seemed to lack Empathy and Compassion even for each other. They were the children of blood and war and worshiped might and power. Gen 49:5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. Gen 49:6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. Gen 49:7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. Exo 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name. Mat 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. "The lessons from the history are, so long as pride, ambition, and revenge are harboured, men will ever scheme afresh to their own hurt." - Faussat The blood thirsty god of Moses was a man of war and Yeshua guided them into the land of Canaan; But our God is a man of Peace, Yeshua, who guides us to his abode. The law of reciprocity was in full effect in choosing his name (Matt 1:21), that's for certain. From the taker of life to the giver of life. Yeshua is the Hebrew name for the Greek Iesus, and its English spelling is "Joshua." The translators seem to love making the simple complicated. When my perspective changed, the meaning became clear. No mystery to me anymore, by his blood we are redeemed. I like his ways and i'm thankful that I can spend eternity in Rapture now that the old man died and as a new man, Resurrected from the dead (Eph 2:1).

Awesome teaching, but I think I disagree with the final implication of Jesus being violent/wrathful in the traditional sense. I'll give the benefit of the doubt and keep listening, but I think that John intentionally used very violent imagery against the almost comedic backdrop of a gentle lamb to put to shame the violence that is typical of human empire. To steal from Daniel, the other nations of history instigated beastlike terror with the use of violence and oppression. The just, humane Son of Man ("human being," in contrast to the beasts) ushers in a just and worshiping society based on the sword of TRUTH (which divides soul from spirit, according to Hebrews and Luke). He conquers nations without the use of violence. The "lion" of Judah who is worthy to open the scroll of Life is, in fact, the lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world. I think what John is doing in Revelation 19 - in his description of the conquering king - is offering a satirical image of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a baby colt/donkey. Whereas the world's rulers subdue their enemies by riding into their lands upon grand stallions, brandishing swords and accompanied by armies, Jesus rode into the land of His "enemies" - the harlot city, on a donkey, with the sword of His mouth - God's truth. Because He has not resorted to the world's "way," He has indeed conquered the nations, and continues to exert authority over the world.

I've been studying scripture for 40 years. The Lord brought me to see a long time ago that Premillenial views are NOT sound doctrine despite the sincerity of those who hold them. Apostolic teaching that is sound says that Christ's kingdom is NOW. The most solid scriptural evidence for this is found in Acts 2, in Peter's address to the crowd after the Holy Spirit fell on the gathering of believers. THIS IS THE FIRST ANOINTED MESSAGE OF THE GOSPEL AFTER THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS. The key verse is 2:36- "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, BOTH LORD AND CHRIST." Premils also tend to promote the idea that the nation of Israel currently occupying Palestine got there as part of God's plan to "bring them to Christ" in fulfillment of OT prophecy. This whole argument proceeds from a false understanding of scripture; it directly contradicts what Paul writes in Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, and Corinthians. Eph 2:13-22 could not be clearer regarding this doctrine- God has fulfilled his promise to Abraham in the creating of his people, the church, which is comprised of people from EVERY NATION.

AstronomyUpdate, I'm curious why you say that the preterist view must be written under Nero. Even though the author writes as if it is written under Nero, how could he have known that the next Caesar would only serve a short time? It seems to me that for any preterist view the later you can assume it was written the better because the fullness of the events would be better known. On the other hand, perhaps he is extrapolating that the next Caesar won't serve long because these are the signs of the times and the end is near. Perhaps he didn't know that he was actually being prophetic about the reign of the next Caesar. I suppose it if it had been written in 90AD he wouldn't have mentioned only the one short rule, but the several that followed. heh, I think I may have just answered my own question.

@Born at 33 I think I may have misunderstood the definition of Preterism at the time I wrote that comment. Upon further reading, Preterism seems to say that these prophecies are of things that have already been fulfilled, or partially fulfilled (as in the case of partial preterism), but not that they aren't prophecies at all. By that reasoning, your assertion that Revelation had to have happened before 70 AD makes perfect sense. Otherwise, the preterist interpretation that it was fulfilled in 70 AD would disqualify it from being prophecy altogether. TL;DR I missed the point that it still has to remain prophecy regardless of the degree of preterism you prescribe to.

Most scholars date Rev around 95 AD under Domitian. From what I have learned only a small number say it was written before the fall of Jerusalem. Just sayin'.... I believe one of the 7 churches didn't exist before 70 AD. Nicolatians aren't mentioned in any of Paul's letters, either, and he died around 67 AD. Finally, Ireneaus, who was a disciple of Polycharp who was discipled by John the Revelator said it was written during the time of Domitian. I am guessing Irenaeus's knowledge was passed down from the author, which matters. All that said, it is nice to hear another perspective, and your views are certainly worth investigating.

That means I heartily embrace every word of the classical creeds of the church, include the oft-repeated affirmation, "...from thence he shall return to judge the living and the dead." Bruce, when you mentioned the Temple, the Holy Spirit moved me to remembering these verses from Christ Jesus: John 4:19-24 NASB The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. [20] Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." [21] Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. [22] You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. [23] But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. [24] God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Simply amazing!!!

Bruce. I wish to thank you for this series of lectures, and the great care you no doubt put into making them. It really shows that for you, it was a labor of love. I am looking forward to getting your book - "Historical and Chronological Context of the Bible". I am somewhat concerned however. It is obvious that your approach to eschatology is PRETERIST. No crime in that. I find much in at least "Partial-Preterism" which has strong argument; but not so much with FULL-PRETERISM; that is, suggesting the entirety of the prophecies in synoptic Olivet Discourses ( Matt.24; Mk.13; Lk.21) along with the book of Revelation being PAST-TENSE, and accomplished by AD 70. To be clear: I am NOT suggesting your are guilty of the same errors as "Hyper-Preterist" are; i.e.- wherein they say the resurrection of the dead already occurred. No, I don't think you would agree with that. Yet one thing you do seem to avoid is addressing the issue of Irenaeus' not-so "ambiguous" statement that the Apostle John penned Revelation in the latter part of Emperor Domitian's reign. Which, if true would certainly late date it's publication to some time after AD 95-96. Which, again, if true makes your preterist interpretation untenable. You promised to address the Irenaeus citation at mark 6:30 in your next session ("Letters to the Seven Churches"); but having watched it as well as the following one thoroughly, I was disappointed to find you did NOT. It does SEEM as though you may have deliberately skipped over him, since you did indeed list a number of other Early Church Fathers. None of them however could offer any clear rebuttal to your position, like Irenaeus does. Please address this when you have time.

@@oracleoftroy Yes, I HAVE watched them, and NO he doesn't address this issue, which for many, is a silence which speaks louder than words. He has other perplexing issues to deal with however, and none of them are dealt with either. For example there is POLYCARP. He was the FIRST Bishop ("Angel") of the Church in Smyrna. A very few historians debate that. The problem for Peterist who so desperately want (NEED) to date John's writing of the BoR prior to Jerusalem's fall in AD 70 is... Polycarp was only a new-born infant when that calamitous event occurred! And by the way... even more damning to the Preterist early dating schema is the fact that there was NO Church at Smyrna yet either! All of this is solidly established historical FACT! How then could Christ be addressing him as an active Bishop ("Angel") over the Church in Smyrna? I have heard only a few attempts by Preterist to explain this, none of which hold water. The worst was one which seems to epitomize much of the Preterist hermeneutic:i.e.- SPIRITUALIZING of the texts, and events so as to fit their narrative. One Preterist "apologist" who will remain unnamed (as I have no interest in making any ad hominem attacks here)...suggested that Christ had John record his letter to Polycarp and the Smyrna Church in ANTICIPATION of that yet future day in which they would indeed exist!🙄 You know, were it not such a serious matter, I might laugh at that. But it really is no laughing matter, is it? When backed into a corner by questions which appeal to FACT and not just clever rhetoric and wishful thinking: They resort to fantasy using the most reprehensible hermeneutical gimmickry ever seen. 😕 Personally, when I witness this occurring I lose all respect for that individual. I do encourage Bruce Gore to see this and reply. 😇

A key to understanding Yeshua's Revelation is knowing that It's heavily influenced by Moses' Lamentation of Deuteronomy 31-32. In fact, much of the NT is influenced by Moses' Lamentation, as is the OT. He warned about the end of Israel's national statehood if Israel rebelled against the Mosaic Constitution. The Song of Moses referenced in Revelation is Deuteronomy 31-32, not Exodus 15.

Final thought starting on 32:39. To what degree have you, have I recreated Jesus in our own image? We want Jesus to be what we want him to be, but he is not easily domesticated. And the Jesus that we actually know and love and worship is our King and our absolute and rightful authority. And the only proper posture before this one is a complete relinquishment of any claim I might ever think of making to myself as I surrender all of my life and all of what I am and every interest that I have to his sovereign authority. He promises to be a Christ, a king of grace, but let us never lose track of the other theme that runs through the Scripture. There's a strange phrase that's used in Revelation chapter 6. It is the phrase “The wrath of the Lamb.” You don't think of lambs being filled with wrath very often, do you? But that's part of the theme, and sometimes I'm afraid we sort of cook up an almost idolatrous picture of Jesus that's very comfortable but not very accurate. So let's do everything we can. I'm not saying this picture captures him perfectly. I'm just saying it's a little bit of a wake-up call to us. Isn't it? To think about the apocalypse, the apocalypse Jesus.
