I served alongside a Samoan at Ft. Knox. Watched him carry 4 complete M2's at the same time at least a 1000 meters from the motorpool to the arms room. Big dude. He said is the United States Army had a Company of Samoans they wouldn't need M88

In 1982 there was a sergeant in the Marine Corps by the name of Samoa A. Samoa. I know, I’m not making this up. I was the Admin Clerk for the squadron and I knew everybody’s name. I was subjected to a hazing incident where I had to walk through a line of Marines punching me in the arms and this dude from Samoa hit me so hard that I had blood running down inside my arms. For about 10 years afterwards you could see the blood stains in the crook of my elbows. The first time he punched me I almost fell over, and I am a big dude. He got me on both arms because I had to walk through this group of Marines and then back the other way. My arms have never been the same since.

No video can do it justice, just how loud that engine is at idle. I was at NTC 22-09, supporting 1st ID in July last year , and at the vehicle turn-in I was within maybe 15 feet of this thing and if you walked in front of its exhaust, it could almost blow your hat off. Beautiful sounding engine.

Triple A. Only problem was the 88A1 didnt have enough grunt to tow our A1 Abrams when I was stationed in W Germany. We had to use another Abrams to tow them in. That made the beer payout alot bigger as we had to pay the 88 crew AND the towing tank crew.

BY THE BOOK, during the Cold War, you were SUPPOSED to use two M88s (50ton capacity) to tow an M1 (60 ton tank) - one in front and one in back. In the late '80s, I was on a Direct Support Maintenance Team that supported an M109 self-propelled Artillery Battalion. We were set up at a Maintenance site near the Table VIII range in Grafenwoehr, and our GP-Mediums were set up just at the edge of the berm of the impact zone. One night, we were on the berm watching the DATs qualify on the Table VIII range, when something went awry. A gunner on one of the M1s did something he wasn't supposed to do and that M1 burned up. A light-bird (Lieutenant-Colonel) chased us back into our GP-Mediums and, a short time later, I could hear that SINGLE M88 pulling that M1 off the range... So, there is by the book, and there is field expediency... I should also add: while I had very little to do with the M88 (I was a 'wheeled-vehicle mechanic' - 63W); I also held an 'H8' identifier...school trained recovery specialist. At the time, I 'owned' an XM816 wrecker.

Using my Prime Squeeze Elements’ (wife) YT account to post. I’m a retired 11B/11H and I’ll never forget the power of this BEAST! You probably noticed how the ground shakes as it rolls by, but in this video they’re driving pretty slow and gently so in front line units, our mechanics did no such thing! All Grunts love to listen to this thing as it screams by with its twin turbos howling in anger. As for pulling power I’ve seen it pull a one megawatt generator that was built onto a semi-trailer unit but all 8 tires were flat. So, they decided to just tow it as is then worry about the tires later. The trailer started moving quickly after they poured some serious horsepower on it and it left 4 deep trenches in the paved road as we pulled it to the front gate at Al-Rashid (FOB Muleskinner/Camp Cuervo). I’d love to own one of these if given the chance but I think the diesel would be a bit spendy, lol. And yes, in Iraq (2003-04) the mechanics either ran over vehicles trying to block the road or push it out of the way. We never had an M88 down for anything no matter what hit it.

I'm sure my neighbors will appreciate the use of the crane to sling raise their cars out of ditches and hoist them up to change tires or work on exhaust systems. The local career center could maintain the engine as an educational program goal. Hunters would appreciate it to put up deer stands even higher using the boom. I could also use it to move buildings when needed and need I say the entertainment value at birthday parties for kids? Nothing but win-win all around

The M88 is definitely my favorite US Army ground vehicle, it was the first vehicle I was assigned to when I started my job as a test engineer for the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1988, a neat coincidence between vehicle model number and year of start. The test I was assigned to was a competition between the M88A1E1 and the General Dynamics version of a heavy recovery vehicle based off the M1 Abrams tank, GD called it the ARV, or Armor Recovery Vehicle. I was assigned to the reliability testing group for that test and got to spend lots of time with the E1, or first experimental version. The ARV was quick, way quicker than the E1 with the turbine of the Abrams pushing it, but it was such a fuel hog that the joke was it could pass anything on the battlefield except a fueling point. Eventually the test showed that overall the E1 was the better choice for the next generation of heavy recovery vehicle and the E1 became the M88A2, with a weight of 70 tons to be able to tow an Abrams that was projected at that time to weigh that much and probably more in the coming years. Since the M88A2 now weighed as much as the tank the Army only needed one to tow the Abrams safely as opposed to needing two M88A1s, one in the front to tow and one in the back to help slow down the Abrams on down hills. It was probably the most interesting test I worked on at APG and definitely made me fall in love with the M88 since I got to not only help direct the testing of it but also got to drive it and help the mechanics fix it from time to time. Can't wait to see how the M88A3 turns out with a new powertrain, suspension, track, and additional road wheel station on each side. Thank you for helping me relive old memories of my favorite Army vehicle, I hope you will cover the development of the M88A3 in the coming years too so we can see how it will continue on as the best tank tow truck we have.

Lol anything in your Stash ofnthe Achillies or the m26 Arv? Don't want to call it the Dragon wagon because not it's official status that was the transporter version I'm a modeller, I built the hercules can't not have it in the collection! Got the m88a1 and G1 German version still the m88 so yeah lol but finding anything on Achillies 17 pounder British version is by far the hardest time I've had looking for references and interior information! Just nothing! I did find one original in Russia not messed about with by IDF like the one in the Chieftains walk about video so that video's rendered usless really lol your getting people building ww2 IdF Achillies 17pdrs lol! And maybe look into the real facts that the original m10 the Achillies was a code name by superiors its nothing to do with the British m10 17 pdr people get that wrong all time it's crazy! Youll see m10s with the Duckbill bustle same that was on the m10 Achilles British version they just named it m10 duckbill! That's another thing people associate the British version with them duckbill bustles! Can't be more wrong that's something that needs to be told maybe your the one to do it?

Can someone tell me where the acetylene tank is stored on the Hercules? Is it a standard sized storage bottle? I retired in 1990, after starting my 20 year service as a 63F10. Retired as a 63E40 and ALWAYS had issues getting the 'extra' small acetylene bottles for the M88A1. If the bottle is stored standing up 'somewhere', is there a remote access for the gauge and hose hook-up? Thanks!
