Things break and I fix them.........
I've been a mechanic of about 25 years boy and man, worked on all kinds of wired and wonderful things. They say verity is the spice of life and over the past few years I've defiantly had that!
I pretty much work on anything with a diesel engine in it!
Trucks, transit buses, boats, shredders, wood chippers, combine harvesters, tractors, drilling rigs, cranes, forklifts, boom lifts, generators, fire pumps and pretty much anything else you can think of!
The bigger the better when it comes to diesel engine!

I ran a Bertram 54 with a pair of 12V92’s for ten years, I have to admit after keeping them running for ten years I was only to happy to get on a Viking 65 that has a pair of MTU 16V2000’s I would have to say I’m not a fan of those 12V92’s.😏 that old Bertram is in Guyana with its new owner.
@MrSeachaser175 the 2000 series was a big improvement over the 2 strokes.... they make a great noise, but they can be found lacking in many other areas!
@@theenglishmechanic. Agreed, yes I’ve had various issues with my MTU’s broken turbo shaft, leaking seawater seal on the raw water pump, oil leaks here and there, electronic control faults, and a few other minor faults but nothing to making me want to rip them out and toss them over board!😂
Mercedes Actros Engine ??
It was actually from a Grove crane but obviously it was also available in the MB Actros.
Do you have twin disc 8501 series gearbox and Allison 4700,4800 gearbox for sale? Both old and broken ones are fine!
Interesting question 🤔 but I only fix them, not sell them.....
hi mate what size props under it and gearbox ratio
Hello mate, unfortunately I don't have a clue! My memory just wont go that far back..... 🤔
what classic engines gotta love that
Yep 👍
The most beautiful sounding engine, period!
yep, sound great!
The owners keep that engine room clean.
Yep, it wasn't to bad at all
That think person I could Kitten
One engine has an awfully lumpy idle and one injector knocks.
It does sound rough, it was cold and running in half engine mode. The customer opted to replace all of the injectors at a later date while the engines were having some other repairs performed.
What size, make and year boat?
I don't 100% remember all the specific's but I think it was a Sunseeker (possibly a RENEGADE) 60ft from the mid 90's.
well that’s the correct way to compound turbochargers a charge air cooler between each charged air👍
african or nigerian Beach Strong Diving
Ddec4 71 series? Did this engine start life as a DDEC2?
I believe it was DDEC 4 from the factory
i know i’m a pain in the a** with the questions but what do you like better remote cooling like this or on the front of the generator. thinking of making mine remote like this is
I don't really have a preference to be honest, as long as it works it good with me.
@@theenglishmechanic.ya know i never thought of it that way! 👍
Rolyroice
Sure is Rolls Royce power 😉
what does this do, charge the sprinkler system?
It maintains the water supply pressure and boosts it if the pressure drops for any reason.
@@theenglishmechanic. oh wow so that’s how they don’t lose pressure or volume… wondered how they managed that
That beech out in the water wants to know if you have a hand held six ft. Jesus. Watcher that spins. I'm like dude. I'm straight. You got my. Boat some airsupport
Why the rad fans on the bottom spins slowly than the top ones?
The bottom fans are not running only the top set of fans are. The bottom fans are turning only because of the large amount of air flow through the room. The bottom fans will com on if extra cooling is needed.
Hell yea thats whats up v12 big chungus... great video 👍👍👍👍
That's a big and sweet looking 2-stroke Detroit generator and it sounds like a usual Screamin' Jimmy which is to be expected with these old 2-strokers.
Tuned s few of these back in my days never had a unhappy customer. One guy still has his 350/ 71 in grain truck still starts great after 23 years.
I know this is an older video, but what are these big generators used for? Are they running a remote facility or something or are they just used for emergency backup?
This unit was emergency back up for an office/shopping building
Hi, What system are you using to run the D16 engine when it is connected to the dyno? Handy having all the engine parameters for Dyno testing.
It's all Volvo Penta controls.
Need to have an injector looked at on the port side engine.
It really does not sound healthy...
Cruising at $200/hr in fuel.

I remember the San Juan AMA 1999 NovaLFS with the Series 40 engine
She is sweet
in the beginning of the video there are fuel coolers on the left…. why does it need fuel coolers?
Basically the fuel leaving the engine and heading back to the tank is pretty hot so it is run through the coolers to reduce the temperature before it reached the tank. I believe the diesel fuel density change with temperature as well and that can cause a few issues with performance.
@@theenglishmechanic. it does it expands when over 92°F if i remember correctly, thanks for the reply! never noticed one before then again i don’t work on em over 150kv 😁✌🏻
Was the engine already warm when you tested or was it cold?
TBH I cant really remember but I think it was warm, maybe somewhere around 30c.
I have a boat with 4 16v92 engines I love Detroit they will run forever
Wtf is it?!
@@ironmantooltimelikely a tugboat.
36 liters of diesel. beautiful
just magnificent.
Nice engines. I've installed some of these and the 12V and 16V engines too.
We had the 16V538 and later 16V4000 on our Patrol Boats. The last true MTU was the 16V538 in my opinion. Once Detroit bought it out they turned it into a gigantic LSX The 538 was a Swiss Watch comparitively.
Wish he had brought out a decibel meter. I love old Detroits. No muffler matters as they are just so mechanically loud..Especially in a confined space like that.
ACM
How much is it in US dollars and how much diesel does it consume per hour?
Unfortunately I have no clue about the USD cost for fuel.
Hi. What controls the acceleration on this engines. We have one that it stays around 400 rpm for around 10 minutes and then it goes to full throttle.
Hello, fire pumps are usually a fixed speed engine. They don't usually have any RPM controls so I'm not sure why it would idle before gong to its specified RPM. It kind of defeats the purpose of the pump if its in idle while there is a fire. 🤔
@@theenglishmechanic. Hi. I found the problem. The actual water pump is dragging and putting to much of a load on the engine I am assuming is going out. I took the driveshaft off and engine runs perfectly fine. We are going to open the pump to see what the problem might be. Any ideas?
@@frankhernandez7700 Good find and good luck with the repair. 👍

Hello, its very easy to adjust valve clearance on this engine but not so easy to explain in the comments. kzread.info Some good videos on this channel that will explain how it is done.
Can I ask questions
Hi good morning how are you good hope you are doing
stupid
Deary me, Winston would not approve of those engines
I HAVE A 16V71 I PLAN ON BUILDING INTO A RAT ROD IS THE 24V71 JUST 3 OF THE 8V71'S BOLTED TOGETHER? I'M NEW TO THE 2 STORKE DETROIT DIESELS'S BUT I LOVE THE SOUND AND JUST THINK THYE LOOK LIKE A ARTIST BUILT THEM PERFECT FOR WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH ONE.
As far as I remember the 24V71 are two 12v71 blocks bolted together.
In a way they’re like modular engines, you can kinda just keep going as long as the factory could machine it
