  it is, in fact, not walr+us so the plural is not walri it's _hvalr-hross_ meaning whalehorse. The plural of hross is hrossin, hrossunum, hrossum, hrossa, hrossanna, or just hross depending on the part of speech, which is why old norse is a hard language. so I'm gonna say leave the plural as walrus. English is largely germanic, and in german the singular is walross and plural walrosse, so we're good on pronunciation.

  Here’s my guess. Heaven was explained to this child and then the idea of animals in heaven was brought up and the answer was, well some animals. Which then lead to, only animals you pray for.
