Excuse for typos like 1998 instead of 1996🙂
No worries!
Thank you very much for this video. I have been Sakamoto's fan from the very first contact with YMO in my teen years back in 1980. Strong bond to entire body of his work, which is really diverse and interesting, unique especially Async. Admiration for his movie scores. Full respect for his activism. And : still, hardly any week without listening to video CD recording from Ryuichi SakamotoTrio World Tour 1998, where your interview comes from, too. You made my day ...
Glad you enjoyed it. Still can't believe he is no longer with us. His music lives on. Thanks for stopping by to watch.
“The only thing I know how to play is a record” is now going to be my response.
Very pleased you liked my ad-libbing! Many thanks for stopping by and watching the video. Hope to see you here again.
German pressings are almost always good ! Wonderful to see Berlin and the travel there through your journey 🙂
Quite. In terms of classical music, nothing beats Deutsche Grammophon records. Hope to get Berlin Part 2 uploaded soon. Many thanks for watching.
I will check out your part 2 ! Sounds good 🎵
Hi 👋 So glad that you have taken us on your journey to Berlin. I've not been there. That record store looked good , i could spend an entire day in there. Look forward to seeing more of Berlin. Thanks from Carl in New Zealand.
So pleased you enjoyed the video. I was just so amazed at how many record shops there were in so many various iterations. It's such an exciting and vibrant city. I hope you'll be able to visit sooner rather than later. You won't be disappointed. I hope to upload Part 2 soon. Many thanks for watching.

Cool as always. Take me with you next time? Looking forward to more vinyl adventures
Sure! :-) I am already planning to visit again as a week here doesn't seem long enough with so many things to do and see. Many thanks for stopping by and watching.
Wow. Great haul! I like many of those, too. I also don’t know some of the bands. Which of the groups you weren’t familiar with did you like most.
The Outlaws and Captain Cody were interesting finds and I enjoyed exploring their music as a newbie. Many thanks for stopping by and watching.
I visited Berlin in the mid 1990s and the contrast between West Berlin and the former East Berlin was huge. I haven't been back since but after watching your awesome video, I want to visit as it's clear so much has changed. Must be exciting to be there when Germany is hosting the Euro 2024 and England and Spain will be facing off in the finals. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to your next vid from Berlin.
Everyone's gone football mad out here. It's fun to see and the atmosphere is electric for sure. As I live in the UK, I will certainly be cheering for England :-) . Many thanks for stopping by to watch. Hope you get out to Berlin sooner rather than later. It's a very vibrant and hip city.
@@retromusings I forgot to mention....when you are home and settled, check out the 2019 film "Berlin I Love You" starring Helen Mirren, Keira Knightly, etc.....similar to "New York I Love You" and "Paris, je t'aime"......Enjoy!
Around turn of last century I went to Berlin alot because a mate lived there and so much to see. I had a bit of a thing for the DDR or GDR though it was evil and controlling you can go to the stasi headquarters it had an eerie atmosphere about it. Kebabs can certainly be great or pig awful a bit like record shops 😂 worst in Berlin was a russian restaurant I'd say I'm not a fan of beetroot related cooking.......
What an interesting time to visit Berlin in the 2000s. I haven't seen a single Russian restaurant yet. Couldn't agree more about so much to see in the city. It feels like a week isn't long enough in this vibrant city. And yes, a bad kebab is the worse nightmare!!! Thanks for watching.
Actually, dream box is the album that was inspired by all those old files
Yes. I got the 2 albums mixed up for some reason. Thanks for stopping by and watching.
I was in Berlin earlier in the year on a vinyl trip - it's fantastic , as I'm into early 70s German Prog , it's an aladdins cave . I do recommend the incredible Galactic Supermarket Records Ankauf which has the best collection I've seen of original presses of Early 70's Prog/Krautrock (but all genres). Not sure if it's your thing but the Stasi HQ and Hohenschonhausen Prison are incredible peaks into GDR history. Enjoy!
Berlin is such a vibrant city isn't it? Funnily enough, I stumbled across Galactic Supermarket Records Ankauf by chance as I was exploring the neighbourhood I was staying. It's only 10 minutes away and it is really an aladdin's cave. It was overwhelming. I hope to upload a video about that soon. Many thanks for the tips about the Stasi HQ and the Prison. Thanks for watching.
My old mentor was from Berlin, born in 1929, and was a great tour guide for me though the years. It's changed so much over the past 35 years and almost unrecognizable. Never been into Euro-Techno, but cool they have some vinyl shops. Weather looks iffy, but check out Wannsee lake if time, thanks!
What a wonderful personal connection with Berlin you have. Thanks for sharing that. Vinyl shops are everywhere. You'd love it. I find the architecture and the city's history fascinating. I've always been a fan of early 20th century German cinema and love the films "Metropolis" , "M", "Blue Angel" but for some reason never got around to visiting Germany. Wish I had longer than a week to explore. Love to see Wannsee Lake. Thanks for watching.
@@retromusings Once home, check out the film "Berlin, I Love You" Starring Helen Mirren, Kiera Knightly, etc. Similar to Paris, je t'aime, and "New York, I Love You".....several mini stories. Safe travels!
Thank you. What a nice and personal tribute to such a legend.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for stopping by and watching.
Fantastic glimpse into Berlin. That HHV store looks like a great find. Had a look at their online shop, they have a huge selection and ship internationally too. Apparently Kreuzberg is a pretty cool district in Berlin. Are you going there? Look forward to seeing what's next from Berlin ! Thanks for this great video.
I've been told Kreuzberg is more edgy than Friedrichshain! HHV has a great selection online for sure. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Have you heard of the band called Translator? I love their song "Un Alone"
I haven't heard of this group. Will certainly check them out. Thanks for letting me know and stopping by to watch the video.
Paris Match (with Tracy Thorn) is fantastic. I hope you own a copy of Confessions of a Pop Group by the Style Council
Paris Match is just brilliant isn't it? Really enjoy Everything But the Girl too. I'm afraid I don't have a copy of Confessions of a Pop Group. My bad! Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Great video. Berlin is on my list of cities to visit.
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you get to Berlin sooner rather than later. It's a fun city. Thanks for watching.
Oh, you're here =D. I hope you can find the wonderful record stores that are here (I went to my favorite one in Kreuzberg today).
Your city is wonderful. I have never seen so many cool and varied record stores specialising in certain genres. Seems like a lot of cafes, restaurants and bookshops feature or sell records too. Very exciting to see so many young people into vinyl. Someone told me Kreuzberg has lots of record shops too.Lucky you!
This video took a naughty turn, eh? HHV looks like a pretty cool store.
Haha. Yes. I honestly had no idea BDSM was so popular in Berlin. Maybe I have lived too much of a sheltered life in the UK! All fun to see and great to people enjoying various lifestyles. Lots of happy people, especially with the Euro2024 footie going in Germany. And yes, the HHV store was amazing. So much house, techno and home-grown grooves from different locales. All just so cool to see.
@@retromusings Yeah, continental Europeans are a bunch of perverts :D
Why was it the best donner kabob you've ever had? Do they do something different here than where you live in the UK?
Everything looked freshly fried orcooked and all the ingredients were so fresh. The kebabs didn't look like they were sitting under a heat lamp all day. You can see them cutting the lettuce, tomatoes, and they make their own sauces rather than using big vats of pre-made commercial ones that I have seen used in a lot of kebab shops I've been to in the UK. The bread was super-thick pita bread which they took the time to toast. And they were massive. I'm hungry now! haha. Thanks for watching.
@@retromusings Thank you for the answer. I will keep watching your adventures in Berlin.
Some interesting sights there in Berlin. The record shop looks very tidy. You cant beat a good kebab 👍
Honestly that kebab shop is amazing. All the ingredients were so fresh and they make their own sauces rather than the big vats or pre-made ones that I have seen in a lot of kebab shops I've been to in the UK. Interesting time to be in Berlin with Germany hosting the Euro 2024. Lots of screamig and shouting at the bars and restaurants that have giant screens showing the matches.
Thank you for letting us come with. Do the say Ha Ha Whe(-n)? HHV 😄 Would love to ho back to Berlin. I was going to go on a craft beer/beer pilgrimage in the summer of 2000 but, yeah, THAT didn’t happen. Was gong to see the brewery beergarden BrewDog took over from Stone Brewing, the Mikkeller bar and so much more. Enjoy and looking forward to more from RM! 😊
I hope you'll have the chance to visit sooner rather than later. I went to a proper German beer garden finally and it was just so much fun. I have never seen 1 litre-sized beer steins. Haha. And giant pretzels too. Many thanks for watching.
Great video thanks 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope to see you here again. Thanks for watching.
Nice! I’m curious what albums that you bought. I haven’t been in Berlin in years. It’s definitely very interesting. The people were very kind and helpful.
I've bought some. Mainly 2nd hand and one new record. No kraut rock though. Although I have picked up a few Falco cds. Yes. It certainly is a vibrant city and very big similar to London. Very spread out. Many thanks for stopping by and watching.
“Organic Grooves” is a term that is unfamiliar to me and I really like it.Though uncertain as to its meaning I will be using it regularly. Great Video. You are proof that Less Is More Organic Grooves!
Yes. I like that term too. It's the first time I have come across it. I guess it is similar to homegrown grooves? grooves from respective locales? Glad you enjoyed the video. Many thanks for stopping by to watch.
Berlin is such a vital city!
It sure is. So fun, vibrant whilst steep in so much history. Many thanks for watching.
This is reminiscent of one of those travel shows/documentaries. Nice. Is the first record store you came to (HHV) in a tourist area? The sign outside is in English, and so are the record tabs.
The area didn't seem very touristy to me. It feels more residential and like a neighbourhood. A lot of students and young professionals. Based on how many record listening stations they had, I think the shop does very well. It seems most of the customers are millenials and Gen Zers. Many thanks for watching.
Wow RM. I had no idea Berlin is the epicenter for BDSM shops and sex clubs! On my go -to list now thanks to your awesome video. Must say the vid is so well produced. Thanks for sharing this fun video.
Lots of different cultural and lifestyle experiences on display in Berlin. It's certainly an edgy historic city. It's very spread out like London. I was caught off guard seeing all those BDSM shops. Didn't realise it was a big thing in Berlin. Thanks for watching.
Pretty smooth trip 👌 ! Nice when the planes ✈️ & trains 🚆 run on time. Bowie liked Berlin.
Indeed. On top of that, experiencing the German efficiency so far is a real eye opener for me as a person visiting from the UK haha. Many thanks for stopping by. Fun time to be in Germany with the Euro 2024 happening. And yes, that England penalty shootout was heartstoppinig!!!
RM....what an adventure. I've never been to Berlin so it's definitely a place I want to check out especially after watching your video. Can't wait for the next instalment. 🙂
It sure is and I'm lucky I have a week in Berlin. Many thanks for watching.
I bought a record from HHV Records when I searched unsuccessfully for a decently priced copy here in the UK. Never heard of them until then. Was a pain free experience, thankfully.
What a great HHV experience. I notice they ship internationally so it's good to know the online buying experience was good. Many thanks for stopping by to watch.
Wow, ive just come into a bit of money due to redundancy and Berlin is top of my list. Looking forward to more Techno & kebabs...probably my two favourite things!
5 Confident Penalties For England ⚽️ ! That was amazing.
So glad you didn't say Techno & bdsm🤣
Sorry to hear about the redundancy but yes, Berlin is definitely worth a visit. Great food..people are football mad at the mo because of Euro 2024. Techno and killer kebabs sound good to me too.
@@davidellis5141 Ha,ha, it certainly was David....& we have to go through it all again tomorrow...I might turn up to the pub just in time for the penalties!
@@SteviesVinylCupboard Cheeky!
Fantastic video! I've never been to Germany. I want to go after watching your video. You should be paid by the Berlin Tourism Board for this great vid! Thanks for sharing. Love it.
Haha. Yes. That would be nice £££. Pleased you enjoyed the video. It's an exciting vibrant city for sure. Thanks for watching.
Might have to pay a visit
Vibrant and historic city. Very edgy for sure. Hope you will have the chance to visit. Many thanks for stopping by and watching.
I'm shocked I tell you. Lol. I can't wait for the next episode. Enjoy.
Haha. Yes. It's all good and lots of fun seeing different kinds of lifestyles out here. I am very interested in history and politics so I am finding Berlin so fascinating. So many record shops out here too and it seems like there's so little time to check them all out properly! Many thanks for watching.
How exciting! Berlin looks like so much fun. German efficiency is amszing isn't it? Look forward to your next video on Berlin. Great video.
Yes. It is. Great vibe and very edgy for sure whilst steep in so much history. Coming from the UK, experiencing German efficiency is such a contrast. There seems to be record shops everywhere. Many thanks for watching.
gabor zsabo is so good all his albums are excellent
Yes couldn't agree more. So amazing for me to discover his music. Thanks for stopping by to watch and comment.
What separates TOP's horn section with the other great horn bands is their usage of staccato choppy lines, which is .. Total ear candy. Lenny Williams is the shizzz !
As a non-musician, great to know your take on ToP! Yep. Lenny is the shizzz!
I never tire of TOP.. " Too Much Oil In The Ground" and the whole Urban Renewal album from '75 .. Right after Back To Oakland is an essential record as well ! Going to Tahoe today..😎 Whoo hoo
I can't believe I didn't comment on this one before because I am a massive fan of TOP ! RM.. Great rundown of one of my all-time favorite bands in the land ! Cold Blood is, of course, amazing as well 😊
Thanks for checking out the video. Never mind me being an Oakland native, they're just so awesome aren't they?
Ahhh, so East Bay ! I thought SF for you, possibly. I bet you lived in the city, though.. Good job on bringing the heat of the mighty Tower of Power ! I met Emilio once.. Such a nice guy !
Yes. Lived and worked in SF before moving abroad. SF in the 80s and early 90s were just awesome!!!
SF was a lot of fun back then, we still visit, and my next stop will be Tunnel Records in the outer Sunset on Taraval.
Very lucky 🍀
Indeed! Many thanks for stopping by to watch.
great channel!
Many thanks for your kind feedback and stopping by to watch. Hope to see you here again.
I loved this band back in '84 and still have their first two albums on vinyl. Brilliant stuff. I always wondered what happened to them. Ever single song was a winner. You made me research and find out that they have 6 LPs. I feel guilty for letting my interest slide.
Glad the video led to further interest in their music! Thanks for watching.
@@retromusings I've been playing the first record and reliving the feelings and memories the music brings back. Makes me happy I never got rid of the 500 or so vinyl records I collected as a kid. Cheers
Something about Candi Staton's voice is just wonderful. A certain innocence and sweetness perhaps.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for stoppung by.
I own that... sounds sooo good.
Yes it's a great album. Timeless. Thanks for watching.
RIP Arthur 'Gaps' Hendrickson !
Hard to believe his passing and the orher major players of the SKA scene. Thank you for watching.
Jethro Tull, Songs from the Woods is currently listed on marketplace for $100.00
Extraordinary. Thank you for sharing that and for watching.
Great shelf! That Tracey Chapman always used to be 50p back in the day, but not any more!
Yes. It's crazy. Back in the day they were as cheap as chips! Thanks for watching.
An album I'd never expected to find; Lynyrd Skynyrd , "Second Helping" on the original Sounds of the South label.
Wow. That's really crazy. Lynyrd Skynrd is such an amazing band!! So sad that tragedy struck them at the peak of their game in the late 1970s. Thanks for stopping by.
Absolute Fantastic Find!! Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it. Many thanks for stopping by and watching.
