Tolkien Untangled

Mae g'ovannen mellyn nin, a meneg suilaid (well met my friends, and a thousand greetings).

Welcome to Tolkien Untangled! I'm Rainbow Dave (before KZread I was a tie-dye instructor at a summer camp), and the purpose of this channel is to present and explain Tolkien's Legendarium in an accessible way. We'll be looking at the Silmarillion, the Unfinished Tales, and the Complete History of Middle Earth, while of course also drawing information from the much more familiar Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Over the course of this channel's lifetime, I intend to go through the entire history of Middle-earth from the very beginning, through all three Ages, and eventually all the way to the end of all things.

So whether you're a superfan or a newbie, together we'll explore and untangle the spectacular awesomeness of Professor Tolkien's works!

    The sons of Feanor are a little ridiculous not wanting to press their advantage on Morgoth. Did they not make a vow to take back the Silmarils whatever it took? Guess they got distracted ruling their realms or whatever lmao

    I’m in the process of reading the books for the first time, and on the topic of Gimli and comedy, fresh in my mind is the scene after the Battle of Helms Deep, the gang has to travel through a forest, and Gimli is shitting himself at the idea. When they come out the other end, Legolas sees eyes in the forest (the ents I assume), he being a wood elf becomes transfixed and involuntarily starts walking his horse back to the forest before Gandalf tells him to stop, and Gimli, sharing a saddle, has an absolute panic attack : “No no no, no thank you, I don’t want to see any eyes in the trees” He might not crack jokes and be a direct “well THAT just happened” comic relief, but he’s definitely fucking funny.

    I've been binging your videos, Rainbow Dave. We appreciate your hard work! Having never read the Silmarillion, I have found your lore videos so helpful, as your personal input and interpretations always resonate with me and bring me further into the story. Thanks for all you do for Middle Earth!

    I think you're reading that "their whole life would be a half year" thing way too literally. I think the point that's being made isn't that their lives are literally shortened, but that they are already akin to a half-year in the perspective of the undying lands.

    It’s more likely than not that Elladan and Elrohir chose immortality and sailed West. Not only would they want to see their parents again after losing their sister forever, they would NOT want to condemn their parents to losing them too - especially after their mother was forced to leave them so prematurely.

    I actually have a version of The Lord Of The Rings that is all in one book with a prelude saying that it isn't a trilogy, but rather one book. It is actually about 1200 pages. It also divides into "book one" through "book six".

    If someone gave me an opportunity to strangle one character from Tolkien legendarium with my own hands my choice is going to be Turin. For Beleg (one of the two of my most favorite elves!!!!) and for being so damn irritating🗡 Still the best story. Love your video! Great job!

  • @tolkienuntangled
    @tolkienuntangled2 күн бұрын

    With all due respect, if you strangled Turin, Beleg would hunt you down and kill you; and there’s nowhere you could go to escape him. From Beleg’s perspective, killing Turin (his best friend and greatest love) is the cruellest thing you could possibly do. I get that Turin can (on occasion) be irritating, but no one would defend him more fiercely than Beleg! 😅 I’m really glad you enjoy the video though! 😊

    Why does evil always fail? Mark 3:25 KJV: And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. <--- Jesus Christ Evil is selfish. Good is loving. Love binds. Sin divides. Everybody is lonely in hell! [Psalm 88:8] Tolkien got a lot of inspiration from the Holy Bible.

    I prefer the version of galadriel in the rings of power compared to tolkeins version as described here. She's supposed to be wise, powerful and good, but she hardly does anything to fight sauron, apart from helping gandalf clear him out of dul caldur. This inactivity strikes me not as wise or compassionate, but cowardly and cold to all the suffering out in the world. And I like galadriel in the rings of power a great deal better than the insipid and indifferent cate blanchett. Rop's galadriel wouldve offered to go with the fellowship or ridden into battle at minas tirith. If there's great evil in the world and youve got the power to make a difference, you dont go hiding away in the forest, you get off your lazy backside and do something about it. Tolkeins galadriel strikes me as weak.

    I'd rather know what if any actual benefit they offer to the wearer. That seems to be the weakest part of the story tbh. Nobody seems to be able to explain a single positive reason the person would wear any of these rings for longer than five seconds before discarding it and having it melted down.

    Narratively it’s kind of implied that by the time of the fellowship of the ring the orcs of the misty mountains are a spent force which is why the movie is misleading about their numbers The war of the dwarves and orcs had cleared much of the misty mountains and the battle of the five armies exhausted the numbers of both Moria and Gundabad Sauron’s plan of using them to conquer the north had failed they couldn’t muster the numbers for vast armies to launch attacks against Lothlorien the woodland realm dale and Eriebor during the war of the ring the bulk of the Sarouns northern armies are made up of easterlings and uruks from Mordor
