I’m pushing 50 and have read this story countless times in all it’s published versions and your telling still of it still has the power to move me to tears, and we haven’t even gotten to the real tragedies yet. That one line is just so much more powerful coming from Tolkien “The war will be over by Christmas” it’s just such a heartfelt line coming from not only Húrin who did not now the gravity of his words but also from Tolkien who knew exactly what they meant.

35:06 I had never realized that before Húrin marched off to mankind's most devastating war yet, Tolkien had him say basically the exact same words that he and his friends would have heard over and over again at the beginning of WW1... Great, this story just keeps finding new ways to absolutely devastate me.

I've got to say: the first time i read the unfinished tales' ( a lot more so than the silmarilion version ) take on turin i've asked myself "is this really tolkien?". It really served to deconstruct everything i thought i knew about the professor's writing style (mind you, i've not read the standalone 'children of hurin' novel before) and the kind of story i should expect from him. The children of hurin is my favorite tolkien story (even thought the characters may not be my favorite Tolkien characters). For this reason, I cannot explain further than "i never expected this from Tolkien" and I think that your way of presenting this story is one of the best ways i can think of honoring the professor's writing!

It's interesting to imagine the parallels that can be drawn between Hurin and Tolkein himself given his own experiences in war...that sort of optimistic apprehension about the end of the war, trying to stay positive yet knowing how bleak the reality of it was. However I dare not call it allegorical. 😅

I have always viewed this as Morgoth's greatest miscalculation. I will not give spoilers, but I think that for as dark as this story and it's sequels become, Morgoth's plans find their loose threads, and from this point forward there is a slow unwinding of his dark will. By the way, I was wondering where the music was from, because I quite enjoyed it. It wove quite nicely with the tale and exposed the shadow hiding in the light.

Turin's childhood fascinates me. His apparent stoicism, and shadowing of Lalaith, given what comes later with the other child of Hurin, is just devastating. Laughter taken from him at the age of five, and all that came after. Truly dark.

You just make me love Turin so much. I can just see him as a child, this gives me such a feel for what he must have been like. This has nothing at all to do with the video, but it's a happy thought my dearest friend and I were thinking of and I think you might appreciate it: can you imagine Aule's reaction to meeting Gimli when Legolas brought him to the undying lands? And vice versa? I think they both cry and don't hide it. I think Gimli treats Yavanna with the same courtliness he does Galadriel and Aule is beside himself with how happy he is that his wife and his creation are meeting and getting along. It's now one of my favorite things to imagine.

Thank you so much for making these videos. Please, please don't take this the wrong way, but these are very nice to fall asleep to at night. Your voice is very soft and soothing, like the Bob Ross of Tolkien. I assure you I do watch them when I'm wide awake, too! 😁

"The war will be over by Christmas." That line hits a bit different knowing they said that about the war Tolkien fought in. Knowing that in both cases they had no idea how badly the battle would turn out.

Hey man. Great great videos i can't wait for part 3. But the children of hurin is my first tolkien book and I'm halfway through it. So can you ease up a bit with the spoilers about the ending and about other books?

I just realized for the first time that Gondolin was built on the resurgent dome of a massive caldera (supervolcano). And the Vale of Tumladin is a giant collapse feature. (Ted Nasmith art). Look at the Long Valley Caldera in California or the Valles Caldera in New Mexico. For an even bigger example - Look at the Toba supervolcano in Indonesia. magmatic

Tears in my eyes listening to your retelling of the story of the children of Húrin rainbow Dave 👍👍❤❤. The saddest moment in this story for me is (spoiler alert) the last moment when Húrin met his wife at their children's grave 😥😥❤❤
