Most videos are from my O-gauge railroad layout modeled after Harpers Ferry, WVa. I chose that location since its one of my favorite places to railfan. Its located at the convergence of two rivers with a tunnel through Maryland Heights. At different points of history there have been as many as 3 rail bridges crossing the Potomac river.

Hi Ken, do you have your DCS system set up to operate TMCC using that special cable from MTH? I think MTH did this also for Legacy but you lose some features.
Cool!
Looks Good!!! 👍👍🇺🇲😎
I normally collect bigger engines but this was a great deal on "the little engine that could" be my yard switcher. Will do a detailed review soon.
Beautiful! Is it made out of metal?
Yes, all metal frame, and hand applied piping & handrails. Wheels and drivetrain metal as well as the tender. Whole thing weighs about 7lbs! Thanks for the comment!
@@99thObsidian wonderful!

@@williamkolina3988 Lionel scale TMCC
@@99thObsidian and still going strong.Any scale engine is cool,in my mind.I find some of my TMCC engines sound better than legacy engines
Sounds like it’s gonna be an awesome extension Ken!! Looking forward to seeing trains running on it!! 😄👍🚂
If you are on the OGR Forum I've posted a couple of pics of benchwork under construction. The dimensions of my room are as tight as possible for a O-72 dogbone plan like mine. I'll have just 2' of aisle clearance in a couple of spaces. Will have to stay fit to access far reaches of layout ;-)
The Allegheny is my favorite locomotive and you did a fantastic job with your upgrade. I've done a few ERR upgrades but never a DCS upgrade, I need to do one like you did.
Hey thanks for the positive comment. 20 years ago I figured out that I could buy a MTH Premier PS1 steamer and upgrade it to PS2-3 for the price of a new Railking. I upgraded a Class J, Greenbrier, Blue Comet and this Allegheny. They have been great engines. Check out the Allegheny on my friends layout: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqKnw9COcdmtmNI.htmlsi=k-S80_Qq07ibGs0n&t=221 Thanks for the sub
Looking forward to seeing more Ken.
Yeah it took me longer than I expected to put the genie (a lot of my trains) back in their boxes and store. See end of WM video for extension track plan. Just ordered more woodland scenic 3% grade risers.
Very nice run ken love the video and new sub -Brandon
Thanks for the Subscription and positive comment. I'm working on a more through review of the Lionel C&O H7 2-8-8-2. For a early 2000 engine it has details I haven't seen since.
When I see engines like these My first though is handling them without breaking something.😊
I agree. I have an unboxing video of the C&O H7 that I plan to release this week. In it I specifically talk about my method to avoid bending/breaking engine details when handling. Subscribe and ring bell to know when my next video is published. Thanks for the comment!
Pretty Awesome Ken. Harper's Ferry is definitely a Great Place to Model after.
I love the historical significance of Harpers Ferry. The fact that its a great railfanning location close to home is just a bonus.
Absolute monster of both engines
Ever since getting into the hobby the size of the curves on my layouts has gotten bigger and bigger. That is so I could run models of the steam monsters you see in my collection. I particularly am fascinated by articulateds like this C&O Chesapeake and the WM Mallet. I've visited both remaining Allegenys and I cant get over how huge they are. Truly fire breathing dragons. Glad you like what you see, I'll be doing a vid featuring all my articulateds soon.
Absolutely wonderful!
Thank you! Cheers!
That Allegheny is a Beast.
C&O ran a few different articulated steam engines. The one on the left is actually a 2-8-8-2 H7 Chesapeake. The one on the right is a WM (formerly C&O) 2-6-6-2 Mallet. The H8 Allegheny was a 2-6-6-6 wheel arrangement. Here is a vid of my MTH Allegeny on my old Harpers Ferry layout: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nXyij8WKirnQaNY.htmlsi=UcEdr9OAxH0P9EOO
@@99thObsidian Nice Video Ken. I just recently bought a Lionel TMCC Baltimore and Ohio EM1. I'm a big fan of these large Steam Engines.
@@jebbthetrainkid1281 The EM-1 that I got a couple of years ago was my first TMCC Lionel scale engine. I added TMCC to my DCS control system just so could run it. I now have a handful of TMCC and Legacy steamers. The EM-1 remains one of my favorites since its B&O and may have run through Harpers Ferry.
Awesome 😊
Thanks for the visit
Very Cool!
I agree. Articulated steam engines are my favorite. I just love how the boiler hangs out on curves. Thanks for the comment and for subscribing if you did.
Wow , just awesome!
Glad you think so!
I have the same H7 and after enough time, I could no longer take having a museum level of detailing with only two chuffs/revolution. Why Lionel did this I have no idea but I finally had mine upgraded to full Legacy and back when I did, the re-release in Legacy did not have whistle steam but mine does. Now, the newer Legacy H7 does have whistle steam. Like you said, all of the JLC models have the same detailing as any Legacy re-run. My JLC Y6b rivals my 3rd Rail Y6b in detailing, they are incredible.
Thanks for the positive comment. I first saw this engine on a KZread and fell in love with the ‘pyramid’ catwalk. I collect C&O and added it to my wish list. I found this one for about half retail hoping nothing major wrong. It’s perfect and the detail is above any MTH premier or Legacy I own. Whistle steam is not that big of a feature for me. Rather have cylinder steam. I’ll live with 2 chuffs for now. Love the whistle.
@@99thObsidian Funny you mentioned the pyramid catwalk. That was the reason I chose this model as well. I guess it's because it was so different. Keep making your videos, they have a nostalgic feel to them.
Awesome
Great! 👍👍
Thanks for the visit
Nice addition!!
I think so too!
Looks good. What is the radius of outside curve? Thanks for uploading video of two great engines.
Outside curve is O-72, inside is O-63. Min curve for the C&O and WM is 72 and 54 respectively. Thanks for commenting. Full review of H7 coming soon.
Another Western Maryland 3-railer! Nice! I love Harper's Ferry. There was a fire on the mainline bridge a few days ago.
Yeah I saw the bridge fire in the news. Another train friend wanted to know how I was going to recreate the scene (JK). I thought of putting a smoke unit under my B&O bridge, nah. Yes, Fireball all the way. I've ridden behind the 734 and hope to ride the 1309 by fall. Thanks for watching and subscribing.
The wmsrr 1309 is actually a Baldwin built. It’s not an alco or American Also the 1309 firebox is black along with the smoke box. The back up light is in the center of the tender and the rear coal bunker sheets are painted red. Another item that is missing from 1309 is the locomotive class and weight on the sides of the cab. Just to note I created a 1309 from a brass right of way 2-6-6-2 over a year ago before lionel announced theirs. And yes I have the lionel version as well Another note I model the Western Maryland as well in 3 rail and have a large stable of locomotives in both steam and diesel.
You are quite correct 1309 is a Baldwin. I was in Cumberland in October and drove this loco on a 'Hands on The Throttle' experience . Also took quite a few photos including makers Plate.
@@Howard-ix2dc Over the years of railroading I’ve had the opportunity to operate C&O 614, N&W 611 and 1218. Back in the 80’s while in the USAF I got the chance to operate 3985 and 8444. Back in the 80’s 8444 was numbered that due to a diesel having her original number of 844.
Very nice bench work.
Thanks Jose, as stated in the video its a hybrid approach that has worked out really well so far. A key factor was going with OSB 1/2" togue in groove decking. Its very stiff and joined well to 1x4 joists that were glued and screwed. I've stood on tables and its solid. Adding 1x3 angle supports from legs to tables took out almost all wobbles. I plan on using same technique for extension but I may use a thinner plywood to make 3% grade. Thanks for subbing if you did.
The biggest thing that bothers me about Lionel's earlier TMCC is that dumb 2-chuffs per revolution. Why on earth did they do this? During this same period, even the brass companies offered 2-chuff or 4-chuff with the flip of a switch underneath the cab. Lionel did FINALLY fix this issue just before they came out with Legacy. With DCS, this was never an issue because that system allows for so much more customization. If you want 2-chuffs, 4-chuffs or even more, you can program it and it doesn't require any upgrades. Overall, I prefer Legacy of course because the whistle quality seems to be better (on some locomotives) than on TMCC.
Ran across yourYou video nice engines and knowledgeable, Thank you for sharing. Keep running those trains.. and "Happy Rails". GMan
I realized that I've been in the hobby now for just over 2 decades. It's not lost on me that a lot of the engines that I've recently added are from the early 2000's. I've learned a lot designing and building layouts, upgrading to command control, ebay, FB marketplace and York. Glad to share and thankful my content is enjoyed.
Nice layout!
Thanks but I really need to do some scenery and not just buy and run trains. My excuse has been that I've been waiting to build the main extension before securing track permanently. Though I could still could work on the riverbeds and make some moveable mountains. Just ordered some storage solutions to clear shelves in background so I can get extension benchwork started. Look for a video on that process soon. Thanks for subbing if you did.
@@99thObsidian I did sub and it still looks great. I have 100s of trains in boxes collected over 40 years. My layout suffers from neglect and too much other junk now in the garage that I added air con vents. Was displaying a lot of train engines in curio until house flooded from ice maker water line and 33k gallons of water invaded unoccupied house for 3+ weeks. I now have an insurance mess. I say again, your layout looks great. I do occasionally set up fast track on carpet with 90 plus curves. Great trains and look forward to your videos.
Nice review. The sounds are nice, but I could do without the crew talk. The opening hatches are neat, but not necessary and really don't enhance the tender's appearance. They both look like decent pullers, though. I'm more of a traditional guy, so I like the C&O livery, but that is a matter of preference. An excellent side-by-side comparison and video, for sure.
Thanks for commenting. Adding sounds like crew talk is an easy way for model train manufacturers to add 'features' via the same sound hardware they've already added. Really doesnt cost them more especially since they use nearly identical dialog across multiple engines. However, hand applied piping, steam affects require more precise labor/tooling-electronics. All at a greater % of manufacturing cost. We see these facts with these models. They look basically the same but the Legacy has more sound 'features'. I would have liked to have seen more than just whistle smoke added. Some blow down or cylinder steam would have made the Legacy model look AND sound more realistic.
@@99thObsidian I agree, somewhat. Features, like opening hatches, really don't enhance visual operating perspective. The non-opening hatch on the C&O locomotive looks the same as the opening hatch on the WM. I do like the newer sounds and features. Whistle steam, cylinder steam, blow-down, extra chuffs and some of the operating sounds, like coupling, flange-squeal and others, are just fine. The crew talk, though, is totally unrealistic. It wouldn't take much to get a generic, but better, more realistic crew talk. The new locomotives are excellent, but there are a few things, that wouldn't take much effort and cost, to improve.
need to get the legacy 1309's markers fixd
It’s just a small pet peeve, but I’m tired of replacing the crappy figures that Lionel is still using in their engines otherwise I’m a big fan of Legacy and your comparison was very well done. 👍
Good point

@@99thObsidian I WUD LUV TO C HOW U RUN 2 DIFFERENT SYSTEMS ON YUR LAYOUT. LEGACY VS MTH. I AM NEW TO THE HOBBY, ONLY 1 YEAR AND A FEW MONTHS. I ONLY HAVE LEGACY ENGINES AND FASTRACK. 🙂
@@ARMYVETT First, welcome to the greatest hobby in the world. I would get Legacy if it was available. The remotes and bases are being sold for more than a Legacy engine. I don't need the few extra Legacy features that bad. Perhaps when the CAB 3 comes out I'll consider it. In the meantime I can run my 2 Legacy engines in command mode either via bluetooth or TMCC with my DCS remote. I'm planning to do a short video of how to run Legacy with the LionChief app on my phone.
@@99thObsidian THAT'S WHAT IM TALKIN ABOUT. I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ANY OF THAT. I USE 2 UNIVERSAL REMOTES TO RUN MY TRAINS. I WANT A FEW MTH ENGINES BUT DON'T HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE TO RUN THEM ON FASTRACK. @@ARMYVETT I haven't heard that name in ages, Obiwon Kenobi :-). I go by Obsidian Ken now a days. The type of O gauge track you use has no effect on the command control system you use. MTH PS2 or 3 need MTH DCS to run in command mode (which you'll need to control the speed of more than one engine on the same track). DCS can control Lionel TMCC but Lionel Legacy cannot control DCS. See if you can find a DCS Commander or remote for your MTH PS 2 or 3 engine. It wont conflict with your Lionel universal remotes.

Nice video. Even if I could. Afford one, which I can’t, I don’t have the curves to run one
Glad you enjoyed the video. The used TMCC engines are typically great values at less than half Legacy prices. This is the only scale articulated that runs on O-54. Almost all others require O-72. So it happily runs on my inner loops O-54 siding.
I like the older version better.
I can't deny the value of the TMCC 2-6-6-2. It cost less than half the Legacy version and has 80-90% features. I'm happy though to have a model of the largest operating steam engine in the east.
Great! 👍👍
Excellent comparison video! Nicely done Ken. 👍
Thanks Frank. You are where I hope to be in a year in terms of subscribers. I have a Greenbrier just like the one you just ran on your channel. It was one of my first PS1-PS2 upgrades. The only other Legacy engine I have is the Orange Greenbrier Lionel released last summer. I'm planning a comparison video between the two soon. I subbed.
Thank you Ken, just keep doing your videos and shorts and you will get there. I love that orange Greenbrier I wish I would’ve pre-ordered it. Keep up the great work! I have also subbed.
Fantastic look at these great engines.
Thanks for the positive comment. I'm at the point in my collecting where I'm upgrading older versions of engines I already have. I'm trying to limit the railroads I collect to the region of my layout (Potomac river valley). The best feature is that this is the only scale articulated that I know of that runs on O-54. Most others require O-72.
Nice video Ken! I’m not sure all the noise/sound is worth the extra money. Chuff smoke and bells would be good enough for me. But again, I am used to older American Flyer. The lights are also nice. My legacy American Flyer engines get the volume turned down. Same with my DCS MTH S scale engines. Enjoyed this video! Keep up the great work! Cbtrainnut on KZread!
Thanks for the positive comment. I rarely run with smoke on (which I forgot to turn on for video). I agree that the sound and light features may not be worth what Lionel charges for a brand new engine. About 75% of my collection was purchased used. Most typically at half original retail, but 20 or so years old. Nice thing about model trains is that they don't wear out. That video of the landing in Japan was cool, I like that feature of Airbuses.
@@99thObsidian thanks for watching my video. I just thought that feature on the plane was so cool. It didn’t work so well at 33000 thousand feet up at night though! I hope to have new train video up soon.
Great review! I am a stanch believer that the smokebox color that Lionel used to use (the darker shade) is far more visually appealing than the lighter shade they are using now
It is! 1309 does not use grey as their smokebox in the WMSR scheme, Its a black. I'm guessing they used 734's colours instead of it's own. The roof is the only difference thats semi correct but its a tad too bright. Correction*: it is a very dark grey at this point it looks black, I've never noticed when I was younger so this is a shock.
I must be dense I don't see any significant difference Both are beautiful If the TMCC engine has Odyssey it is fine I have one TMCC diesel without Odyssey and it is not as smooth as low speed Keep both Perhaps an upgrade to ps3
I have two Atlas TMCC diesels with no odyssey and I stripped TMCC out and replaced it with a Blunami board and it has AWESOME sound and the speed control is better than legacy... in my opinion!!
You are not dense at all. Visually the TMCC and Legacy models are identical. There are a few small details not worth mentioning and certainly not worth the $$$ delta. However, the improved Legacy sounds, lighting effects (rule 17) and the #1309 livery make this a worthy investment. Besides I have enough C&O engines. I've only upgraded MTH engines to PS3 and MTH doesn't make a 2-6-6-2. Thanks for the comment and sub if you did.

@@williamkolina3988 Thank you so much for subscribing. One of the best parts of this hobby is meeting people who share my passion for trains (models and real). KZread has been a great way for me to share my collection virtually. I've been a MTH guy since 2000 but my friend Craig (Southfork layout) introduced me to Lionel. They make models of engines I wanted that MTH did not (like the 1309 and the B&O EM-1). TMCC are great values and as you can see lack only a few sound features when operated via DCS. See if you can find a DCS Commander.
Nice review! 9:17
Thanks Craig!
Hello Mr.Hobert.. I have the those locomotives too..😃 I'm going to keep my C&O just because of sentimental reasons. The only thing I do not like about my C&O mallet is the two chuffed sounds per revolution when the Fire ball 🔥 has 4 chuffs per revolution. Great video!!! Thank you!! 👍👍😎😎🇺🇲🇺🇲
The 4 chuffs on the #1309 and the rest of the sounds is part of the reason I prefer the Legacy model as well. Perhaps if the C&O was #1309 instead of 1521 I'd consider not selling it. I justified the 1309 cost on the proceeds of the 1521 sale. I really appreciate your comments. It takes a bit of time to make these videos. I'd be farther along building my layout if I'd stop buying trains!
@@99thObsidian 👏😂
Nice , a real treat . good luck with it . have a great fathers day !
Happy Fathers Day to you too.
That's cool seeing you set it up for operation using the DCS system. I understand that when you do so, you do lose some of the features of Legacy because Legacy came out after DCS and MTH has not made modifications in their DCS to embrace all of Legacy. The DCS hand held needs a sprung switch for say quilling whistle.
Yes, you are correct that DCS TMCC control of a Lionel Legacy engine has fewer features. I was talking with my train friend who has the Legacy remote and he is able to activate the wheel slip sound feature and I am not. The bluetooth LionChief app has limited functional access as well. I'll demonstrate Bluetooth and DCS TMCC functions in my running video of this engine. Thanks for watching, be sure to subscribe to know when I drop the next video.
