Lionel 2-6-6-2 Mallet Steam Engine: Legacy vs TMCC 4K

Ойын-сауық

This is a comparison of the recently available Lionel Western Maryland #1309 steam engine. I already had an older TMCC Chesapeake and Ohio #1521 version of this engine that I got used for around $700 So are the new Legacy sound features and details worth the extra $$$$? Watch the video and let me know what you think in the comments section.

    The biggest thing that bothers me about Lionel's earlier TMCC is that dumb 2-chuffs per revolution. Why on earth did they do this? During this same period, even the brass companies offered 2-chuff or 4-chuff with the flip of a switch underneath the cab. Lionel did FINALLY fix this issue just before they came out with Legacy. With DCS, this was never an issue because that system allows for so much more customization. If you want 2-chuffs, 4-chuffs or even more, you can program it and it doesn't require any upgrades. Overall, I prefer Legacy of course because the whistle quality seems to be better (on some locomotives) than on TMCC.

    Great review! I am a stanch believer that the smokebox color that Lionel used to use (the darker shade) is far more visually appealing than the lighter shade they are using now

    It is! 1309 does not use grey as their smokebox in the WMSR scheme, Its a black. I'm guessing they used 734's colours instead of it's own. The roof is the only difference thats semi correct but its a tad too bright. Correction*: it is a very dark grey at this point it looks black, I've never noticed when I was younger so this is a shock.

    Yeah I saw the bridge fire in the news. Another train friend wanted to know how I was going to recreate the scene (JK). I thought of putting a smoke unit under my B&O bridge, nah. Yes, Fireball all the way. I've ridden behind the 734 and hope to ride the 1309 by fall. Thanks for watching and subscribing.

    Thanks for the positive comment. I'm at the point in my collecting where I'm upgrading older versions of engines I already have. I'm trying to limit the railroads I collect to the region of my layout (Potomac river valley). The best feature is that this is the only scale articulated that I know of that runs on O-54. Most others require O-72.

    The 4 chuffs on the #1309 and the rest of the sounds is part of the reason I prefer the Legacy model as well. Perhaps if the C&O was #1309 instead of 1521 I'd consider not selling it. I justified the 1309 cost on the proceeds of the 1521 sale. I really appreciate your comments. It takes a bit of time to make these videos. I'd be farther along building my layout if I'd stop buying trains!

    Thanks for the positive comment. I rarely run with smoke on (which I forgot to turn on for video). I agree that the sound and light features may not be worth what Lionel charges for a brand new engine. About 75% of my collection was purchased used. Most typically at half original retail, but 20 or so years old. Nice thing about model trains is that they don't wear out. That video of the landing in Japan was cool, I like that feature of Airbuses.

My layout suffers from neglect and too much other junk now in the garage that I added air con vents. Was displaying a lot of train engines in curio until house flooded from ice maker water line and 33k gallons of water invaded unoccupied house for 3+ weeks. I now have an insurance mess. The wmsrr 1309 is actually a Baldwin built. It’s not an alco or American Also the 1309 firebox is black along with the smoke box. The back up light is in the center of the tender and the rear coal bunker sheets are painted red. Another item that is missing from 1309 is the locomotive class and weight on the sides of the cab. Just to note I created a 1309 from a brass right of way 2-6-6-2 over a year ago before lionel announced theirs. And yes I have the lionel version as well Another note I model the Western Maryland as well in 3 rail and have a large stable of locomotives in both steam and diesel.

    @@ARMYVETT I haven't heard that name in ages, Obiwon Kenobi :-). I go by Obsidian Ken now a days. The type of O gauge track you use has no effect on the command control system you use. MTH PS2 or 3 need MTH DCS to run in command mode (which you'll need to control the speed of more than one engine on the same track). DCS can control Lionel TMCC but Lionel Legacy cannot control DCS. See if you can find a DCS Commander or remote for your MTH PS 2 or 3 engine. It wont conflict with your Lionel universal remotes.

    Nice review. The sounds are nice, but I could do without the crew talk. The opening hatches are neat, but not necessary and really don't enhance the tender's appearance. They both look like decent pullers, though. I'm more of a traditional guy, so I like the C&O livery, but that is a matter of preference. An excellent side-by-side comparison and video, for sure.

  • @99thObsidian

    @99thObsidian

    Thanks for commenting. Adding sounds like crew talk is an easy way for model train manufacturers to add 'features' via the same sound hardware they've already added. Really doesnt cost them more especially since they use nearly identical dialog across multiple engines. However, hand applied piping, steam affects require more precise labor/tooling-electronics. All at a greater % of manufacturing cost. We see these facts with these models. They look basically the same but the Legacy has more sound 'features'. I would have liked to have seen more than just whistle smoke added. Some blow down or cylinder steam would have made the Legacy model look AND sound more realistic.

  • @johnandrus3901

    @johnandrus3901

    14 күн бұрын

    @@99thObsidian I agree, somewhat. Features, like opening hatches, really don't enhance visual operating perspective. The non-opening hatch on the C&O locomotive looks the same as the opening hatch on the WM. I do like the newer sounds and features. Whistle steam, cylinder steam, blow-down, extra chuffs and some of the operating sounds, like coupling, flange-squeal and others, are just fine. The crew talk, though, is totally unrealistic. It wouldn't take much to get a generic, but better, more realistic crew talk. The new locomotives are excellent, but there are a few things, that wouldn't take much effort and cost, to improve.

However, the improved Legacy sounds, lighting effects (rule 17) and the #1309 livery make this a worthy investment. Besides I have enough C&O engines.
