And this is why you should not sign a contract with a company like this if stuff like this is ambiguously defined, meaning the definition is solely in favor of the employer.

They also won't tell you what that target number of days is. Our company started this this year, so i've set my own target, giving myself an extra week over my allowance last year. We'll see if that upsets them.

I was "Of counsel" (whateverthehell that meant) to a law firm. Everyone there was "Of counsel" except for the owner/"Partner." I noticed that after anyone departed, the Head Honcho would trash talk them and try to blame them for whatever went wrong. Suffice it to say that within a period of less than two weeks I had a lot of things happen, the most serious of which was that one evening when I stayed late my nose happened to get into a file folder whose documents indicated that the firm's malpractice liability insurance had lapsed. The next morning I was sitting in Bankruptcy Court at a creditors' meeting, and realized that the firm's client I was representing would not get more than $100 at best, no matter what. I thought to myself, "Whatthehell am I doing here?" and realized that I had to get out of there. I then realized that none of the firm's retainer agreements specifically named me (or any of the other "Of counsels", so that I would likely be able to avoid an adverse legal malpractice case against myself. And so, en route back to the office from Bankruptcy Court, I stopped at a liquor store and got some empty boxes, and immediately cleared out my desk and went home. Sure enough, I learned that the Head Honcho was blaming everything on me; I even received threatening letters from him a few months later. But I had documentation of some of the shtick he pulled which he would not want a judge or jury to see, so I accordingly ignored all of his communiques. I set up my own law practice from my home, and did well enough (and also got a teaching gig at the University). None of the threatened lawsuits against me ever materialized. P.S. Thirty years later, the Head Honcho now stands suspended from the practice of law, his reinstatement motions all having been denied. He has several outstanding defalcation judgments against him, and has relocated to Texas, where he has gotten into various troubles.

I left one job, not because I considered it totally toxic, but because I didn't think they had confidence in me and I wasn't getting the training I needed to be on a track for promotion (not that I expected a promotion after the length of time I was there but I wasn't even getting the preliminary training that would qualify me for openings that became available). When I did, the GM asked me if I was sure about my decision, but I didn't get any prolonged pressure to stay.

the notion that work is anything but work. We need to get back to the fact that this is just a business transaction. One person has things that need to get done and has money. another person has the skills, knowledge and time to get the things done, and wants money. They are trading. Money for labor. end of story. as somebody who needs labor you are not an authority, you are not a leader, you are not a friend, you are sure not family. You are a person (or business) that is willing to trade money for labor. That is all. This is very empowering to the person with the skills. Because now you realize you are in demand, you have a customer who is paying you. You can always get another customer. You do not have to put up with their crap. If you cannot find another customer, then you need a skillset that is in more demand and need to work on yourself. If you see yourself like a company and are just doing business then things become less personal, you have more power, and life is easier.

It's not what either does, it how they do it. Women think they can manipulate their coworkers into doing their job for them, refuse to put in the actual work themselves, and complain whenever things don't go their way.

Banked defined PTO goes against the bottom line. It's a payable account, a debt. "Unlimited PTO" erases that entire liability.

Hats off to the managers for at least trying to do the right thing. What's really needed, however, is a new mindset within companies that bases the availability of the privilege on the nature of the work rather on some out-moded, arbitrary tradition. Worker need to unite to make it standard that work that can be done at home is automatically structured that way. Varying from this policy should require an objective reason. (Note: I'm a retired carpenter for whom working from home would never be an option. But lots of office work can be and should be.)

Not all employees have the same output, or the same motivations. The Paredo distribution curve is real. This is a "lowest common denominator" mindset and companies that think this way end up with bottom-of-the-barrel type of workers.

This happens where I work. Company is owned/ run by a dinosaur, and said everyone back to the office. So many good people left the company because of it and management won’t admit it was a terrible decision. Most of my team works from home 2 days a week or so (contrary to the formal policy). We all respect the department head greatly for hushed hybrid. It’s not been formally said or addressed, but we all just do it and there is no favourtism - it is equally applied. I then take this approach with my own staff. If hushed hybrid hadn’t come in I know that at least half of the department would have left. I had started looking for a new job when the return to office was originally announced. It has made hiring harder from a reduced pool of candidates (particularly when looking for very niche skillsets and experience) and return to office is still a sore point in the office nearly a year on. It’s just not market standard anymore and old execs need to either get on board or retire. Even with hushed hybrid outdated return to office mandates are killing commitment and productivity. The execs at my company have lost nearly all respect from staff over it. We had to stop taking questions at the exec quarterly staff updates because it was brought up every time and people were quite openly angry about it and kept challenging the execs over it.

There is some value in workforce cohesion and working relationships are uniquely fostered by physical collocation. If you’re going to drive into the office, might as well do some work and chat up with your coworkers. There’s plenty of flexibility to allow for half days that minimize time spent in traffic.

Unlimited PTO only benefits the employer.. my job changed to unlimited 2 years ago and I've only been able to take 2 days.. before that I made sure to use 10+ days each year out of the 15 days I earned. We were allowed to roll it over, when I switched I had 1 month of PTO saved, when I asked if I was going to be paid out, they said no.. it was a bunch of crap..
