Off Grid Scotland, eco living, natural living,
We have bought 50 acres in the highlands of Scotland and will be building our off grid eco home using renewable energy to power our eco home that we will be designing and building using natural materials. We will be living in an off grid caravan while we design our house connecting to solar power and making our own micro hydro power system for our off grid power, we will be connecting a composting septic tank to deal with our waste and making our own greywater reed bed to filter our water. We will also be filtering our own water collected from one of the streams running down our property.
We plan to rewild the land with new trees and grow our own food hydroponically as well as construct a cob roundhouse and convert the sheep barn to a workshop and renewables plant room. Join me and my family on our off grid live and see how we make off grid living work.

i like this idea of doing videos about house design. You should be able to in post-edit to lower the resolution of the higher resolution video to match that of your lower video resolution so that for the most part they look the same. It is not going to be perfect but close enough. I guess in the UK it is easier to get stuff imported compared to the states. We are very picky on what you can get imported especially if it is food, plants, anything alive. Amazon is getting better in using recyclable packaging but still can be dumb sometimes on what it uses as packaging. For instance, I got 2 of the same type of product and one can in a box that is recyclable while the other came in a white bubble wrap. I confused why it didn't come in a box or like here in brown bags. Are you not using 12Vs in the caravan? I see your lamp uses a 230V plug.
My friend. Where did you by this turbo hydro plant ?
Have you been in touch with Leave Curious, they may help with the reforesting as i know they are already involved in reforesting in Scotland.
I have watched his videos for a little while but haddnt thought about getting in touch so thanks for the reminder
Claiming to have no money when you've got collateral in property is a bit disingenuous. That's not to say you haven't worked hard to get to the position you're in so well done on that score.
Sorry, I made a follow up video to cover some extra bits as others have also said the same kzread.info/dash/bejne/f5OWt6yoZtC0YdI.html
@@offgridscotland No need to apologise. You've done very well and, as a fellow inhabitant of rural Perthshire, welcome. Just please don't do what so many white settlers do, assume you know better than people who have lived in the area for most of their lives.
For some reason , YT didn't recommended your videos for three weeks ( I watch too much geopolitics , I suppose) , so I subscribed in order to remedy that. I wonder , why didn't you attempt to square the building - loader , or big tractor with hydraulic arm would have make that job easy (day , or two , depending on a weather , man power and their skills). With some diagonal bracing , it would stay square (I did it on couple of buildings , smaller though , with only using big truck (lorry ?) 50 ton jack and car for puling (in one case). I suppose that it is done for now (forever ?) , so my advice isn't helping...I'm going to check other videos I've missed now.
Its right inside the building which is already half falling down so I dont think I could get any machinery in there to lift it. The cieling has also been constructed right up to the main roof which is why I insulated it between the rafters rather than on top. But I probably would have if it was a bit easier to get to. Glad you managed to find us again
A very robust piece of kit. Together with Quality features at a very good price. In your environment you will used too the full. See you in the next one. Cheers.
Thanks! 👍
Its Mbit/s not Megabytes.
thanks
good thing to know that the high gain antennas or also known as Yagi antennas need to be aligned properly. pointing them to what you think is pointing at the mast may no be the strongest signal
I think I learned as much in part 2 and ended up with a different set up all together
You should have passed a 200 meter electric cable, it's about 90 pounds, You can feed your router and pass an Ethernet signal thanks to a CPL, it's safer, more stable, faster than your TP Link antenna and cheaper
Ah I think thats what I actually ended up doing in part two
I use a ethernet extender through my 220v system, so simple and fast. No extra wires and other stuff, just plug it in the poweroutlet and plug in the ethernet cable to the router, then on the other side so the same but connect the stuff i need... "Plug & play" Take care fr om Sweden and thanks for a great channel👍👍
Nice that sounds like a great setup
Great looks easy to use ! Little john from chichester
Thanks Little John
Hey up another review , cool ,.that picture hangar at back of ball socket , you can use that. . All I'd do is , to hang it , then above ,where you'd usually lift it. I'd place a screw there too, to stop it from coming away . Won't be as good as two screw holes, but it'd secure it ,and easier to change positions .
Great idea
Is this a product review channel now? I thought it was about creating an off-grid homestead... shame
Sorry, I tried to explain at the end my thoughts for doing these videos. I am still releasing the project videos as well.
@@offgridscotland Ok, I didn't get that far into it. But will now. Thanks for the reply
gigabit Powerline adaptors would be a great way to bring the connection back to the property through the power wire
Thanks I will look into those
When I did this with my uncle in an old house in stamford, we used a piece of gaffer tape to smooth the round corners...it worked great
Thats a great idea. My brother lives in Stamford and I grew up in Oundle
Good to see a industrious mind using what you have to hand, i either would have used the corrugated like yourself or for a wall depending how i felt a the time. Some people will pay 10x more to try and achive what you are creating. 👍
Thanks, I am lucky to have the bits hanging around but it feels so much more satisfying when you can reuse something for free and it looks great
👍
thanks
Must feel very special having a dip on your own stream
It was incredible.
Excellent, still catching up on your videos. I would love to have a shed that size and with that view!
I feel so lucky to have it (although the windows are still covered up as I havent made the window frames yet)
I’ve got a few reolinks, main problem with solar ones is they take a while to ‘wake up’ and record so you often miss the event that triggered them. Handy to live-view check on things though. I like the 180° idea.
Thanks
Loving this build mate. I can't wait to see the complete job, I think it is going to be a very nice cosy space. Please keep these videos coming I really love them. Thanks again mate.
Thank you so much I am really enjoying seeing it come together.
Im so happy i found this channel. We have similar interests and im always happy to see you uploaded.
Excellent thank you so much.
@offgridscotland Any product review's could be useful, as you don't know your subscribers situations you never know what's useful. I found this video to be interesting and I had an idea of what I could use the device for. Upon saying that neighbour won't approve, not that I would be watching her property but the driveway. Anyway thanks for the video
Thanks Mark, I was hoping at least a few people might find it useful
The Sunsynk servers go down a lot so you can't get readings on the app while it's down. (In my opinion the server situation is awful and is the very weak link in the chain)
The tripping problem may be that you only have 1 battery - might I suggest having 2 (in parallel) to double the power the batteries can feed and be charged by. Your battery is probably 50A nominal current - about 2.5KW (or 100A max - 5KW max). These figures double with a 2 battery setup. This should help stop the battery maxing out.
Someone pointed out I needed to run two power cables from the batteries (we do have 2) as the one I have is too thin to use the whole 8.5k so you are right on the money.
@@offgridscotland It's not the thickness of the cable, it's the fact that a 5.32KWh battery can only give you 5KW on it's own. If you had 2 batteries you could generate the inverter's maximum output of 8.8KW from just the batteries alone, and any solar generated would supplement the batteries. ie. If you wanted a load of 6KW, the single battery setup would only cope if you had 1KW of solar too. Much better to have 2 batteries, then your excess solar and hydro can be stored in the batteries.
We need more of this ‼️
Good review. It's not the camera for me either. I use powered cameras to provide continuous streams of RTSP. Then I do the monitoring and recording on a windows PC with the Blue Iris software. It is rock solid. As you say, the camera needs to be running and the images securely stored if there is any kind of event, and I can't rely on battery cameras with built-in processing.
Yea thats how I felt as well. I prefer a system that gives me a bit more control
Definitely not the camera to keep an eye on the hydro. Maybe you're after a raspberry Pi running it's camera if you want to tinker! 🙂
Thats exactly the project I have been working on for the next video (although I used a firebeetle board)
Don’t ever grow your hair long again. You just went from looking like an attention seeking prat with a man bun ✂️✂️✂️ and now you look cool, sophisticated and intelligent.
Do you watch for content? I don't see the relevance of haircuts.
just wondering, how far is the nearest "big" shop like Tesco?
Its about an hour away
@offgridscotland how do you go about getting shopping, do you drive to the nearest shop or do yoi get a delivery?
Hi, was this a paid promotion?
no not paid, the Camera was sent to me though. ( I think I ticked the box to mention it was )
Just checked and it wasnt ticked thanks for the reminder
Good man, ty. 👍
i'm suprised you have no radio comms like cb or ham radio set up
Me too. Ideal place for various ham radio antennas!
I do have some handheld radios and the defender has one as well. Since the internet video I am getting more into that kind of stuff so it might be a set up I will be working on in the future
Time lapse is nice 👍
Thanks, I left it at the end so people could chose to stay and watch or not if they were in a rush
Nice haircut. So much better!!!!!
Pointless comment.
Thanks, It was getting in the way a bit when it was long
looks a good bit of kit robust good picture solar place it where you want i'll be looking at it
👍
Great video. Something like this is good for cutting metal roofing. Milwaukee M12 FNB16-0X FUEL Nibbler
great that looks perfect!
@@offgridscotland I think it will make it much easier for you
Rounded edge on room separator will imho be more satisfying to feel & look at, more rustic. Stop trying to be a perfectionist & get on bud.
Thanks Partrick
The vents on the floor (tipically below the gas boiler and gas appliances ) are there for a reason. This is to provide a route for gas to escape should you have a leak! (Gas being heavier than air). Boxing in the underside of your caravan could cause a build up of gas under your caravan. I'm sure there is some legislation as regards this and it may be advisable to investigate and provide the right amount of ventilation. Keep up the good work and be safe!
Thanks William, some others had also said this and I made sure there was enough airflow through the underside (the side closest to the ground is now open completely)
Really great video. Love the tips on plasterboard. Loving the look. Great haircut. Only problem was all the adverts in this video.
Buy premium, problem solved.
Sorry It annoys me as well when I watch my own video back to check it uploaded ok.
@@offgridscotlanddon't be sorry, not your fault. But when utube put so many in, it spoils it, I had one advert about 30 seconds in, then another a couple minutes later. Then the usual load that they put in. Still love the videos.
Plastic bag technique over the radius for plastering apparently usually works best
Great idea thanks!
Just a tip, if you over press or ‘polish’ the plaster too much you’ll find that when you come to paint the paint won’t adhere properly 😊
Aha, I have always had bigger problems than that when I plaster but now I am getting a bit better (it is atleast flat now) I will start to worry about the more advanced issues like you mentioned
Use solar.
Thanks, I did end up using POE in the end
I think everybody overestimates how hot a Dutch oven gets and like you said, takes a few tries to get it right.
I still havent got the hang of it
Used angle grinder to cut wriggly tin - works fine with correct cutting disc.
Thanks, I dont think I had the correct one as it was eating a disk per pass (lengthways)
❤
😁
Great video. Enjoying the content very much. Informative and entertaining. So glad I found your channel. P.S. The haircut looks great.👍
Thanks! I am really pleased you are enjoying the videos
27 minutes in and I just noticed the haircut. Too short for a Scotish winter laddie, if ye ken ma brouge.:)
Because at the start he hadn't cut it yet.
Hahaha I was thinking of doing it for ages and then it just happened
Multi material blade on a circular saw for cutting tin roof sheets…. Screwfix sell an evolution blade, just wear safety goggles and a hat
Ah thats a great idea. I have a multi material blade for my chop saw but diddnt consider putting it on the circular saw! thanks
@@offgridscotland I think it’s a slightly smaller one for the normal circular saws I bought a cheap nasty “guild” 240v saw out of argos specifically for cutting tin sheets, i just leave the blade in it It’s also good for cutting rafers etc which might have old nails in them
0:52 such a shame there's no video, would love to have seen that.... and please buy a bus load of carbon monoxide detectors.
I think I added the footage after 0:52. The caravan comes with a fair few installed so it feels like we are ok. Have to check the batteries regularly though
Could be a bit better but just a bit long drawn
Thanks for the feedback
