DIY Micro hydro power-Off Grid Day 35

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We finally install the micro hydro turbine. We run the pipe from the top of the hill, assemble the micro hydro turbo turbine and build a house for it to sit in while putting together some cheap intakes to filter the water inlets. We turn the turbine on and show what figures the turbine outputs in watts and volts as well as PSI figures.

    It's good to see it working. As for the leaking, you can't expect to get it perfect. First, try well done so far.

    Great video, I would recommend when rebuilding to put the box to the side and plumb in a drain due to streams overflowing and erosion.

    You should use a 4 inch pipe to run down from your water supply inlet and then split it off right at the bottom into your 2 inch pipe that go to your turbine nozzles. You will get more pressure thus more power

    You might need to add a breather tube on both pipes to let the air out, it's just a vertical pipe on a t-joint that with the air outlet above the inlet. Have you checked the ltr per min of your streams as your pipe looked a bit thin as well.

  • @offgridscotland

    thanks, I had two vertical t joints per pipe but the water was just pouring out the top and they were 2 metres tall! I have a solution that we will be putting in the next update though. Pipe is rated for 6 bar so I seem to be ok with that. The higher pressure pipe was so much more expensive so I thought I would replace the lower section if its not up to it

    Out of curiosity if one pipe/jet as less pressure and the other is spinning the paddle faster than the other won't it be pushing it through the other jet of water causing it to act like a brake giving less power. Could joining pipes together higher up then splitting it lower down into botn jets minght equalise the pressure on both of them both spinning paddle same speed If that makes sense

    I had wondered if it would have any affect but it doesn't slow the turbine when I turn the other on and I think as they are on opposite sides of the wheel they don't spray at each other much. I will definitely be seeing an eye on it though as we are still testing it.

    i'd put 2 or 3 catch cans at the source and send them into Y joiner to get double the flow without stealing all of the stream. Really cool though I wish I had some land like this

    minuto 5.07 : look at my logo: if you don't put a glued sleeve (I use the one they put on car windows), water will get into the bearing use a fixed injector or change the ring of the double plug: it has an exit hole that is too large and the spray is bad,

  • @offgridscotland

    The bore of your penstock is far too small, the frictional losses are significant. With your static head of 70m & a penstock length of 250m with a bore of 40mm the available head running 1l/s = 65.3m, 2l/s = 57m, 3l/s = 44.3m, 4l/s = 27m & 5l/s = 6.67m. Unfortunately you will be disappointed with the available power available due to really high frictional losses due to the small diameter of penstock over that length. Ideally you should have sought some technical advice prior to purchasing the penstock.

  • @offgridscotland

    @offgridscotland

    Thanks for the advice, I wanted to do it myself rather than go through the hullabaloo of seeking professional advice, as well as the cost associated with it. I also didn't want to use too much water and run the streams dry so I am ok with lower power. Sounds like you really know your stuff though!

    Hi understand you wanting to design and manufacture your own micro hydro system without seeking outside help but as you can see from the above figures the more flow the more head loss due to the long penstock and relatively small bore. Is you penstock actually 40mm bore or 40mm outside diameter? If you can accurately measure the bore I can give you a more accurate figure for head loss at different flows. You say 70m static head on one penstock but what is the head from your other stream? I can then deduce what actual power you should achieve from each penstock and which flow rate will give you the best efficiency. Regards, John@@offgridscotland

  • @offgridscotland

    @offgridscotland

    Thanks John, Its 6 bar 40mm pipe so the ID is larger than a standard MDPE would be but it's not 40mm, more like 36mm. Both heads are 70m but I won't be using more than 1-2lps per stream. We get 80psi per line at the turbine.@@johnhutchinson5265

  • @johnhutchinson5265

    @johnhutchinson5265

    5 ай бұрын

    I worked out the frictional losses based on 70m head using 40mm bore so therefore using 36mm bore the head losses will be even worse than the original figures I sent you yesterday. I will work them out and let you know. You will probably only be able to use a maximum flow of 2l/s otherwise the head loss will be significant. I will also work out your potential power available at different flow rates so you will know which flow gives the most efficient outputs.@@offgridscotland

    John Hutchinson is correct. You're going to be very disappointed with your output and there's no need to have 2 nozzles with that diameter pipe
