  @sivvsi1 You can autofocus with any AF lens on shot preparation, but not while recording, as AF sensors are mechanically disabled.

  I am straigh up telling you. Put this thing up to a camera that came out this year, C400. And you would not be able to tell a difference!!! This maybe, even looks. Better. Would have to directly compare... I think the only downside of this is the video ish look. Wich i am not a fan of. Still it looks great though. And the kind of instability of Raw shooting on ML. If it would look just a tiny bit more like Arri or Red one. It would literaly be used to film music videos and films... Maybe i should try. See how it works out... Also you can get the old Red Ones for some 2k now.... Anyway very nice footage. No one would ever tell that, just by looking at the footage thats its 5dmk3 :D Also i thought its 5dmk2 in the begining... And freking Anamorphic mode. What the fuuuk... :D I have to explore this ML thing a bit more...

  Thank you! The look comes with the used lenses and how you grade. Just a question of taste and the goal. You can also achieve Arri or Red looks. No problem at all. I would prefer the 5D3 over Arri and Red as it is much smaller and lighter. For me it works pretty stable. The anamorphic mode is an absolutely perfect mix between resolution and filesize, without being oversharp as many 4K/8K/... cameras. No idea why no manufacturer ever went this way officially.

  @@MaSc Yeah, i agree the new cameras are just too sharp. Its probably because of high resolution. Not a fan of that look. About grading the 5dmk3 to look like Red One. Not possible. Its not the color science that makes it. Its probably sensor itself. And then how the raw data is processed. And when it gets to the point where user can interact with it, the magic had already happened. And its something about how the pixels are being handled. Not too soft. Not too sharp. Hard to replicate that... But ... Maybe some good algorithms that deal with debayering can make it a little better for 5dmk3 and 2. And yeah the size. Its about commitment. If you realy want to make a good music video for example, An old Red One would do perfectly... And actualy a 5dmk3 would do fine aswell. Not as good though... Actualy i am curious to see how a 5dmk2 would do in a music video situaion, where you get controled lights.

  @gundarsmiks4889 Yes, is hard to get the Red look, as a Red offers no real RAW. What they do in their preprocessing is still a secret. However, for my taste a Red look is not special enough to go for it. 5D2 is veeery different to 5D3 - you can’t really compare it. The look, the sensor readout, the modes and resolutions - very very different.

  @@MaSc yeah i just checked that 5d2 is supposedly 8 ish stops dynmaic range in jpg.. wich is quite low unfortunetly! For todays standarts. so 9 stops in raw probably... And 5d3 is 12 ish stops. So quite better. And cinema film was more or less 13 stops. So 5d3 is close. In a way its interesting. It makes me think how to better put stuff within those given stops... And surprisingly those given stops can look good. But yeah, 5d3 better.

  @@gundarsmiks4889 The jpg performance don't really cares for MLRAW. 5D2 has a slightly better dynamic range than 5D3. If you use dualiso you'll get more than 13stops on both cameras... but that is nearly never needed.

  Hi, wunderschönes Video. Ich habe mir frisch eine 5d Mark iii gekauft und möchte anfangen. Ein paar Fragen habe ich noch: - Ist SanDisk Extreme Pro CF 64 GB 160MB mit der SanDisk SDXC Extreme Pro 64GB 200MB/s V30 UHS I als SD geeignet für Dual Spanning mit der 5d mark iii? -Kann man sich das aufgenommene Video, wie sonst auch, nochmal auf dem Kamera-Display anzeigen lassen? - Wie viele MB/minute zieht der 1080p RAW Modus? Die Fragen werden gefühlt nirgendswo beantwortet, villeicht kannst du mir ja helfen :-)

  Hi, danke! - Ich habe leider keine SanDisk CF, darum kann ich es nicht garantieren. Ich meine es könnte klappen. Aber das ist mein Bauchgefühl. Ich nutze eine KomputerBay 1050x. Die SD sollte passen. - Jain... Man kann das Video ansehen. In extremer Zeitlupe oder sehr pixelig. Wenn man darauf angewiesen ist, empfielt es sich einen Laptop am Start zu haben und dort zu checken. - Gute Frage... den nutze ich quasi nie. Rechnen wir: 1920x1080x24x14/8/1024/1024x55%=45,7MB/s=2,7GB/min (24fps, 14bit, lossless) Viel Erfolg und Spaß!

  @@MaSc Vielen Dank für die schnelle und hilfreiche Antwort:) Gibt es die KomputerBay überhaupt noch zu kaufen? Finde da nichts. Brauche ich denn für 1080p RAw 14 bit überhaupt eine CF? Für den PC ist ja auch noch ein CF-Kartenlesegerät notwendig, oder? Ich besitze zusätzlich noch ein iPad Pro 2020, auf dem ich die Daten unterwegs sichern will, kennst du funktionierende Usbc-CF-Kartenlesegeräte?

  @@t.8362 Ich glaube, KomputerBay gibt es wegen aktuellen Sanktionen nicht mehr in der EU - oder nur sehr schwer. Die CF ist in jedem Fall der SD überlegen. Die SD bring nur 40MB/s, und overclocking läuft nicht immer stabil. Die CF schafft bei mir immer ihre 90-100MB/s. UDMA7 Kartenleser für CF kosten ja nicht viel. Mit dem iPad brauchst Du gar nicht erst anfangen (außer es geht um das reine Daten speichern): es gibt keine App die MLV lesen kann für iOS oder Android. Man braucht schon "was Richtiges", Linux, Mac oder Windows (letzteres bugt am meisten mit MLVs).

  @@MaSc Es geht um die reine Datensicherung für unterwegs. Einen PC habe ich Zuhause. Bei den Kartenlesern gibt's nur irgendwelche 10-20€ Amazon Dinger mit USB-c, die kamen mir etwas komisch vor. Dann werde ich von denen mal einen testen. Hoffentlich wird's bald auch so cooles footage :d

  May I ask you about the writing speeds of your cards in your 5dmkiii? Do you have to use the SD Overclock feature to get this recording mode work? I am getting around 90MB Write speed on the CF card and 21MB on the SD card. With 160MHZ Overclock I get 67MB. Is that sufficient?

  @@KlangfettPiano Yes...about 95..100MB/s for the CF and about 20MB/s without overclock on the SD. So this is enough for 5.7K anamorphic. When trying to record native 4K, you must enable SD overclocking.

I guess it just goes to show how much technical and artistic skill, in the right hands, can create wonderful cinematic work. I am a nob when it comes to video, I am an old photographer. How did you keep the camera so steady? There is simply no jerkiness. Amazing work and kudos to you.

  RAW is a format of data which comes directly from the sensor without being touched by any image processing algorithm. Magic Lantern is a software which has to be downloaded and installed on a SD/CF card, so the camera can load it. In the end you need to download the recorded RAW data from the card to your computer to process and watch it.

  I record with color "framing" preview (setup) and "B/W" (recording). It is not squeezed in any way. I don't use focus peaking, but AF on recording setup.

  Do you know if the limitation of video recording is > 30 min with the Danne Magic Lantern build for Canon EOS 5D Mark III ? How many time we can hope with Card spanning in this mode 5.7 k?

  There should be no limit for RAW recording in any ML cam. The problem will be enormous large files! You should need a 128GB CF and a 128GB SD card in parallel to get around 30min. So you need again the double to get more than that. And you'll need a power adapter because a single battery will be too week.

  Hi and thank you. Yes, the firmware must be in correct version (2.1.2 for 5D2). Depending on the setting you get continuous recording or just some seconds. In the setting I used here it was indeed just some seconds and the setup for getting this mode was really difficult, as it was an experimental build (from reddeercity). If I am right, this should have been recorded with the build "2.6K magiclantern-crop_rec-3k-1080p-5D2-eXperimental.2019Feb01.5D2212". Sorry I can't tell much for 5D2 anymore, as I sold it some years ago. Now I am on 5D3 which is another ML level.

  @@hafidhhhYes, the crop settings have a heavy crop: standard width is around 5500 pixels and here you get 2624. That makes a crop of 2.1x. And it is not centered - you see that one side of the image is a little blurry - corner performance of my wide angle lens. For the beginnging I'd try the standard FHD ML modes for 5D2, as it is way more stable and easy to use.

  Card size and battery capacity limit the record duration. In my case after 13min my 64GB KomputerBay CF is full and 32 GB went to the SanDisk Extreme Pro SD at the same time.

  Well yes, those days are past. With the Danne build you can record this until battery empty or card full. I use v1.1.3 without monitor support but you can get support in 1080p modes with v1.2.3 with less performance.

  For me a single card (CF or SD) is not enough. I need two cards in parallel (CF+SD). Then use card spanning feature. This way this presets works great.

  3K is crop. Without crop, you can have just 1080p (2K). Digitally best is 4K native, optically best is this 5.7K anamorphic.

  I tried to directly compare two 3.5k 1:1 modes. vs 5.7k anamorphic. In the first part 14mm f2.8 Samyang, in the second zeiss 28mm ze f2.0. On Samyang it turned out to be about 23-25mm, and on Zeiss 28mm. Yes, the sharpness is indeed greater by 1:1, but the anamorphic mode turned out to be cleaner in the shadows. Everywhere the aperture was f11, only the shutter speed was different.   Absolutely correct. 1x1 is sharpest (digitally) but also zooms into optical limits of lenses (what makes it already less sharp). 1x3 uses most pixels (because of binning) so has minimum noise and brings the best bokeh and lens sharpness to the the sensor. I also mostly use 1x3 anamorphic mode.

  The Lexar card is fine. For the SanDisk I am not sure - try it out. The problem is, it is a UHS-II card and ML cams just have a UHS-I reader. So the card will fall back into compatibility mode. Sometimes you don't feel a difference, sometimes this becomes really slow. Just a test will tell you... 😉

  @gianlucascocozza There is nothing to loose trying what you already have. If it doesn’t work, buy the other card. I have the Extreme Pro 95MB/s and 170MB/s - both work fine.

  @@DamienKazanFilmmaker You can install the Danne build as any other build. If you already installed ML on your cam, just erase the card and copy the new files over, exactly as you did with the other build. Startup the cam and it should already be there.

  It looks so good...when I try to do 5.7k it looks so choppy. I left shutter at 1/96, and tried 5.7k, 4.8k and 3.8k, the higher the resolution the choppier it looks, if you have any tips please let me know.

  Sounds like your computer is too slow to process RAW video in realtime (nothing unusual, because this is heavy processing). Export the clips as e.g. ProRes and watch in e.g. VLC. 1/96sec is a bit away from 180degree shutter rule. Better use 1/48sec for 24fps.

  I set it up as in any other mode. For pre-recording there is "framing" liveview. Select in in RAW video submenu. If you get noise, a setting must be wrong. While recording, these is no liveview at all - black screen.

  Hi i just ordered a 5d mark iii to try... i played with raw on my 600d several years ago. For cards what would you recommend in regard to spanning which i havent dealt with before. Can i have one large sd card and a few cf cards, or should i have pairs of cf and sd card of the same size, and when they are full then swap to a new pair? I have just one komputerbay 32GB cf already and then some larger sd cards. I hope this question makes sense. Thanks

  Hi, congrats for you 5D3! Hope you like it! Most important for the cards: it must be the right (fast) type. So for the CF 1050x or 1066x is good. And for the SD, the recommended SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I works fine. Buy at a size you can afford. I use a 32GB Lexxar and 64GB Komputerbay CF, spanned with a 128GB SD. You change the CF a lot more than the SD. No problem. Just in post, you must download the MLVs from all the CF cards and the M00s from the one SD, all together into one folder on another drive. Then open in MLVApp, which auto merges the files.

  Crop is 5760/3840=1.5x It can record continuously in darker scenes. In bright scenes I got about 15sec. All without liveview.

  Amazing as always! The camera, gimbal, and location always come together to make a most beautiful image. And let's not forget the person behind the camera making it all possible. 😉 Bit of an off-topic question, but what's your solution for recording external audio with the 5D3? I'm going to Japan for a few weeks, and I'd like to put together my own short travel video using Magic Lantern.

  Thank you very much. Oh, that's not that off-topic: I use a modified Audio-Technica Pro24 microphone which is connected directly to the 5D3. So the camera is able to record the stereo sound in sync with the footage, 16bit, 48kHz.

  @@MaSc Thanks for the information! I'm surprised you're able to record audio directly to the 5D3 while shooting in RAW. You haven't had any issues with Magic Lantern dropping frames? I heard it was in issue with earlier builds, but maybe it's not a problem with the anamorphic mode.

  @@gurt_right1148 I always recorded audio with the MLV and absolutely never had issues with that. I also can't understand why some people write it is a problem. When doing the math: 2 * 48 kHz * 16 bit = 0,192MB/s. And we record 90-120MB/s (5.7K anamorphic MLV). So the audio part is around 0,2% in a MLV. I double that is a problem 😊

  Thank you. Copy both files into the same path. Then open the MLV. MLVApp auto merges the two (or more) files.

  @@MaSc I did but de-squeezing is not working great for me, my files record at anamorphic 1920x2340, I de-squeeze them under "Transformation" at 5760x2340 and they look pretty bad, did try other ratios, this one produce acceptable image but not as great as a cropped one from cropped builds, I'm I missing something? sorry to use this as a forum, not accepted yet in the ML forum

  @@jorgericardo1334 5760 is the correct width. Surely a crop clip is sharper, as it holds 3x the resolution in the same crop. Therefor the anamorphic setting covers the entire sensor width. This looks by far more cinematic and less like mobile-phone footage.

  Those clips are 90-125MB/s depending on the scene, using this recording mode.

  Thank you. I use 1.1.3 as it offers more performance and speed. 1.2.3 offers less performance but support for external monitors in 1080p modes. But I don't use monitors.
