This looks slick, but once I see subscription I move along. I recently went with PDF-Xchange. A big factor was perpetual license, which gets harder to find all the time. I tried out the free version for a while and was happy enough to pay for Editor Plus.

Looks great, but unless you're a heavy user the subscription plan is just another cost to stack on the rest you're already paying. These costs can creep up, it's a shame they don't allow you to just purchase the software and pay for upgrades if and when you need them.

Good point! A major factor in my decision to use Final Cut instead of Premiere as a video editor was the fact that Apple does not require a subscription. However, the recently released Final Cut app for the iPad is subscription-based. I hope they don't bring that to the Mac app in the future.

@@vladcampos Indeed, in the world of subscription... an app has to earn its keep and so within those rules developers risk cutting ties with the masses who might have otherwise purchased their app and been life long customers. Maybe at some point that truth might dawn on some, but as we know... greed has a blinding effect.

So, next time I record, I'll do it with more light. I confess that I'm not into the studio vibe when it is all lit, but let's see what people say. Nice video! I think it is very helpful to explain the different l levels and areas of encryption. I love the encrypted text feature and use it a lot. If I HAD to choose between encrypted blocks of text OR password protected notes (like Apple notes) I, personally, would choose the encrypted blocks. The reason is searching. You can't search for content in a password encrypted note so it is hard to find things. With Evernote's current approach I can have note with a lot of (searchable) context and only encrypt the actual sensitive bits like account passwords or investment balances. That said I think I have use cases for password protected notes if they were also available. I would be more interested in password protected notes vs. notebooks (if Evernote are asking). But maybe being able to encrypt a whole notebook would be a good half way solution between what we have now and E2E for some people. One thing that bothers me about encrypted blocks is the fact that it won't encrypt bullet or number lists. I use bullets everywhere and if I decide I want to encrypt it later, I have to manually reformat to remove the bullets before I can. The building 'simplify formatting' or 'remove formatting' features won't do anything, you have to do it manually (Evernote are you listening?). Also a caveat about check lists you 'can' encrypt a single check box line and you can add checkboxes to an encrypted block after the fact but you can't select a list of checkboxes and encrypt those. It is an annoying distinction.

  • @vladcampos
    @vladcampos3 күн бұрын

Great points there. I also like the fact that encrypted blocks will list the note if I filter by tags. But like you, I think users should have choices. In some cases it would be better if we could encrypt a note or notebook. As for formatting text inside the box, in the past it was only possible to encrypt simple text. When they added formatting, it came with the limitations we have until now. I never understood why some options are not allowed.

I definitely need both the app link and the web link. Actually, I use the app link to a note more than the web link. From other apps that is, inside Evernote and between notes I only use the @-linking option. Example: From todoist projects I use the app link to open a project’s note in Evernote quick and easy. From Notion on the other hand I have to use the web link, as Notion doesn't recognize local app links and doesn’t make them clickable, so I have to use the web link there. Opening a note in the desktop app via a web link takes forever before it opens in the desktop app, and also leaves an ”orphaned” browser window/tab behind. Confusing that the app link copy feature is gone from the three-dot menu, while still available in the top menu and the right-click option in the notes list. (That it shows the keyboard shortcut as being the same for both the app link and the web link is annoying, but I guess should be corrected soon.)

The old internal links start with "obsidian:" and the web links start with "https:". Your computer knows that any link that starts "obsidian:" should open up the Obsidian Desktop application, and anything that starts "https:" should open up your default web browser. Bending Spoons are migrating toward just having web links. These will open up in the browser first and log into your Evernote account. After checking your preferences it will notice that you prefer to see these in your desktop application. It will then redirect by changing the address from "https:" to "obsidian:". This will instruct your broswer to ask your operating system to start the Obsidian desktop app and pass the link. However a webpage is not allowed to arbitrarily launch programs on your desktop. So the first time you try this it will ask you to allow it (these is a checkbox to say "remember my choice" so that you can avoid it asking everytime. Published notes always open in the browser. As it just displays the public version and doesn't log it, it never redirects to your desktop app. Hopefully, Bending spoons will figure out a way of automatically closing the browser tab if it succesfully launches the desktop app.

Thanks for the explanations, which correspond exactly to my tests. Using the Web-Link in other applications (instead of the App-Link) and defining the choice so that the note opens in the application is a real disaster, it takes a long time and is really frustrating. Once again, I notice that Bending Spoons doesn't use Evernote intensively, otherwise it wouldn't make this kind of change.

If I leave it on "ask every time" I can manually go from Evernote on the the web to my desktop app. If I change the setting to "Desktop app" it just stays on the web version and dosn't automatically go the desktop version. Not sure if this is the case there, but here's something you can try. The first choice setting has to always be done on the browser. And that setting is shown on a pop-up box. Meaning that if you have Chrome set to block pop-ups, you'll never see it.

Thanks for working so hard to clarify such a complicated topic. I understand what they are trying to do. Having two kinds of links has been a pain and source of confusion since the beginning. They are choosing to standardize on Web links. If the goal is to standardize on a single type of link, then if you consider all the possible scenarios web links are probably the right choice. I just think that understanding the impact this will have on external apps is important, and you covered that well. There is one thing that is still missing from this conversation, and it is the reason I freaked out when I noticed this change. Ever since they introduced note links when you clicked on a WEB link INSIDE the Evernote App it would open up the Browser and go to the web version of the note. This was what I was worried about way more than the external app issue. That would mean that every time I clicked on a note link in Evernote Desktop it would open a browser window, check the link and then redirect it back to the desktop app. That would be frustrating beyond belief. Not acceptable. But what slipped through the cracks is that fact that in 10.97.x they are intercepting those web links in the Desktop app and taking you directly to the note without the browser re-direct. This is new behavior and addresses that concern. If you go back to 10.96 you'll find that web links behave as I described. So this is an important detail. I wish Evernote would communicate a bit better sometimes.

They need to sort out the keyboard shortcut for copying the link. When you right click it says it is for the app link but in the three dots menu it says it is for the web link. It is actually still for the app link but if the future is the web style link then I guess they will change it.

When I noticed the menu change to the remove app link I freaked out. I use the keyboard short cut to paste APP links throughout my day and the menu told me it was pasting web links. I headed straight for the bug report page. At least right now it turns out that the shortcut is still pasting app links. Note links are probably the most important feature for me and I really don't want them to break it. Many years back when linking was new I got my links all mixed up between web and app links. (They still don't give you the option for an app link on iOS or iPad os). I would try and open some links on the desktop app and it would send me to the web. It took me weeks to go through all my notes and sort it out - and to learn to never try and past a link on my mobile devices. I think I see where they are going with this feature, but I'm worried about it. If they remove the app links then my browser will be involved everytime I try and open a link. That means evernote on the web will open and log in so that it can turn around and send the link back to the app. That is going to slow things down. Some times I have trouble getting the web version to load, in those cases I just wouldn't be able to open a link I guess. I think this is going to make things more fragile.

Indeed, there are several other great apps out there. I'm constantly testing them and many times I share tutorials and my opinions here on the channel. However, for what I need, none ever checked as many boxes as Evernote. One good example is the Web Clipper. I never found one as complete and as good as Evernote's. And the list goes on and on. So, when I weigh the pros and cons, Evernote is always the winner if I had to choose a single app. But there are other apps in my toolbox. For example, I use Obsidian every day for many things I do. And I have already published many videos about it.

We are wrong (I think) that we need to organize our notes as the old shelves in cabinets. For me what it works is a good Title and AI will take of that. I am not using either pins or reminders.. All my notebooks are titles with 1 to 9 .. Because I like to see my notes in "chronological order" ... So obviously the note I want pinned will be number 1 . In case I have more than 9 notes I use 2.1 , 2.2 , 2.3 , 2.4 and so on.. Where all the notes starting with 2 is the same topic

Pinning a note to a notebook is great. I missed it a lot before they brought the feature.

👍 Plain text now in code blocks: I’ve also been using the code block for other things than code, and was a bit annoyed that when they introduced code formatting for different code languages, they didn’t include plain text as an option. But just now when I tried out the code block again while watching your video - there it was; plain text formatting in all its glory! :-) So I can keep using the code block for non-code use (even though I have to manually chose Plain text as ”language”, as English text is interpreted as Visual Basic .NET when set to Auto).

💚 Thank you for sharing this with the community! I'm not complaining at all, but Evernote has been moving so fast that it's been difficult to keep up with everything that's new.

As I understand, Table of Contents uses Link to Headings. Assuming my understanding is correct, that is how I'm using Link to Headings. It's easy to define the headings I want, then use Table of Contents to create links to each of them, all at once.

I guess I didn't phrase it the right way. You are 100% right. That's a Link to Headings. What I was trying to say was doing it manual. Clicking the chain and using it somewhere else, like I did in the video 😉
