It’s like drawing on the right side of the brain. Simply put, the left brain is a huge warehouse of information. It is super quick in identifying and bringing up solutions. For instance, blue truck barreling down on us. Quick get out the way. Years of studying art is like stacking up bricks of knowledge. A trained artist uses the right brain which stays on the present to actually see what’s in front. The more information we have stored plus our ability to control the new information creates better art.

I love the way you took an incredibly boring reference photo and turned it into something so beautiful. The power of creativity… And you did it in 20 minutes

You’re truly amazing! I have been watching you on utube for a couple months now and learned so much! I recently subscribed to your Patreon Channel bu😅t being the dinosaur that I am, I haven’t quite figured out how to negotiate it yet. I’ll get there! I used to do animal and children’s portraits with pastel and watercolor when I was in my 20s then life happened. At 65 I now have the time and desire to rekindle that side of me. I found I’m still good at drawing wildlife but landscape is a whole other banana! Gotta loosen up! I finished a landscape yesterday and it looks like I’m slowly coming along….make a plan…take my time…light touch! I hope I’ll get to share my stuff with you for a critique. Thanks Kimberly Bear

The idea is not to replicate the original painting, but rather to improve, enhance, interprite

I really like this painting! I have tried a few like this, but I can't seem to get out of the drawing/ overblending habit. I get a nice underpainting going, then I go into drawing/ detail mode. I want to get more color and a nice loose painting effect but I seem to dislike the pastel marks I make and blend everything out.

I love your art style so much and thanks for the tutorial!!! I want to develop my own style that isn’t just realism. Currently as an art student I just do realism and it’s painstaking to do every little detail.

I know this is going to sound offensive. Perhaps it is offensive. But it strikes me that you do a lot of fiddling around and covering over what you've already drawn. Doesn't this discourage the beauty of line, and of making marks that are bold, definitive, and striking?

You needed To create a path from the front of the scene to the distant area. Your reference photo doesn’t have a clear light source. I might have chosen a different image.
