    Oh, and forgot to mention- love you painting style! Especially the trees- somehting I struggle with. I love the light touches of color to build "color complexity" in a layered style. Love the fact that these pastels are "chameleon" as it really helps build those layers up- the eye is treated to multiple layers of color, tint tone shade etc. Gives the painting much more depth

    Hullo Karen, I enjoy watching your videos and seeing your expertise in soft pastels! I have only been working with soft pastels for a few years and using a color changing stick might be a bit beyond my skill level! You are making it look easy but I know that it is NOT! I have gotten better mixing a color on my surface and using an under painting. I have a desire to get a nice set of Terry Ludwig pastels, but that will not be anytime soon, unless I am able to sell something! Thank you for sharing this lovely painting with us, once again you have created a lovely painting and I am sure there is an abundance of envious viewers. Please take care and keep sharing your thoughts and techniques with your viewers!

    Karen, do,you have recommendations for paper? Archival quality? I'm new to this and don't know which papers to get- I'd like different colors, muted perhaps- good tooth but not too aggressive. I'll be using panpastel and I think sennilier sorts. Also, any rec9mendation for pastel pencil set? I won't be doing a lot of,pencil, but want them for times when a little detail is,needed.

    Karen, I see you add layer upon layer. How do you manage that? If I put down a colour the paper seems 'saturated' and wont take another on top of it. Is the secret in the paper (more gritty) or should one spray fixative after each layer?

    When picking a pastel set, can’t we only have a vibrantly colored pastel, 1 warm and cool color from each color family white neutral and dark grey neutral. Wouldn’t this be enough? A set of 15-20 if it has these should be enough? If I pick these I can have a very nice set. I don’t need the 100 ct sets? Or am I over thinking? Amazon has a Sennelier 120 ct for 112.

  • @KarenMargulis

    @KarenMargulis

    This would be enough since you can layer and make optical blends but eventually if you can afford it having access to more pastels makes painting more efficient. The sennelier 120 half stick Paris set is excellent!

    Your teaching was wonderful and the colors and textures looked good. I considered a purchase....BUT, given that the company website is very careful to NOT say where the company is located, and given my subsequent research showing it is located in Russia, I think that I can't assume that the ingredients are as toxin free as what might be required in the USA, or that the ingredients would be fully listed as western countries would require. I didn't order, as some Banks in Russia are under USA sanction (due to Ukraine), I didn't want to put my personal information on a site that was not transparent about its origin.
