Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban turns 20! Made $250 million domestically and $795.6 million worldwide I remember seeing it with my friend Josh in middle school, we were so behind on the new releases during that summer This is still one of my favorite installments in the series Even if most say this is the most beloved I still find it's a very solid movie despite so much stuff they ended up cutting out This is truly the shortest Harry Potter film but it works so well thanks to things finally maturing and getting slightly darker than before The new Dumbledore carries the wiseness of Richard Harris but still manages to bring his own unique take to the role Most surprisingly is the added element of time travel that Hermione has mastered with a device called a Time Turner Director Alfonso Cuarón and the filmmakers have this continuous theme of time as well as the contrast of darkness and light Happy ness can be found even in the darkest of places if only one remembers to turn on the light The camerawork is very genius too with the long tracking shots next to the transitions of going dark like the light is fading or the visual of falling asleep to the zoom ins and the many reflections of water The music by John Williams is flawless as usual making this world more atmospheric and even incorporating some hints of William Shakespeare's Macbeth The director of photography does wonders using patinas of silver and shadow together reflecting the darkening emotions It also helps they shot on actual physical locations giving more scale to outside Hogwarts Cuarón inserts here about the first moments of being a teenager while growing up which is something this entry takes advantage to its own advantage, he also has plenty of motifs showing the calm before the storm It's all about questioning everything finding our identities particularly with Daniel Radcliffe as Harry becoming more grown up trying to understand himself being shaped by everything All of this remains a coming of age story involving teen angst and small hints of twinkling romance 'Prisoner of Azkaban' excels being the most complex film acting like a magical noir, it's dark yes but doesn't forget the humor to balance it out

This needs to be kept relevant, cause you know damn well they aren't gonna do this for the reboot. They aren't gonna use huge actual sets, they will just CGI entire rooms and act on a green stage now, sad what the film industry has turned into the last decade or so. I miss the days when everything was performed on an actual built set to immerse the cast, not just CGI everything like they do nowadays.
