Thanks for watching and subscribing. We mainly only take live stock for breeding projects and only kill occasional voucher specimens for research projects. There are several methods: 1. Killing jars with ethyl acetate is preferred method 2. Syringe with alcohol for larger species 3. Thorax pinch is a good back up

Butterfly gardening is the best. I have a couple sugarberry. They're really popular. I see American snout and question mark caterpillars on it. No hackberry or tawny emperors yet but I know where to find them.

I found one in my backyard this year just like this beauty in your video. I live in Socal and it’s the first time I’ve seen a moth like this one in the wild! He had the Orange wings within. The black little spots were gorgous with the white and Orange! ❤

They lay eggs on grass and its really interesting you should try to find monk skippers because they lay eggs on grass that grows from the ground 🤗

A damaged dying Witch moth came upon my porch and I wanna mount the lil fighter properly 🥹 I’ve framed tinier moths in the past but I admit that I’ve been lazy and I’ve just let them dry out on their backs before putting them in their cling wrap frames. I’m determined to start properly doing it!

That is bad news. I'm from New England where it is cold and fallow for half the year but in the summer is lush and full of insects... at least it was when I was a kid 50 years ago.. In hot summer nights every lamp post had swarms of insects, But lately, almost none. I'm afraid that that's a bad sign.

I’d leave it in the freezer over night if possible. Sometimes they thaw out and come right back to life!!

Ah thats so cool seeing all those MVL's. Our members down here use a variety of systems including CFL and Lepi LED. A couple use MVL's too and its something I want to try once I get a better generator. Quite here too atm. August is still winter. Spring next month when I head to the tropics 😁

Yeh for sure! I had an MVL but never got to use it because the company I got it from sent the wrong globe and it blew up straight away - got a refund at least. The only issue with MVL is they are bulky. My current set up I can fit into a backpack and hike in to some really remote areas. Currently building a LEPI Led to do the same but allow me to have more run time - could buy one but with shipping to australia it would cost $520 usd. Speaking of LED's though, you should check Ryan the Bugmans video where he goes looking for vineagaroons in arizona - he shows an UV LED basket trap - those are great to use in conjunction with your main sheet - I've used them as well here and they are awesome, cheap too.

I have white peacock butterfly caterpillars!🤗🤎and had eggs on my black jack of my dainty Sulphur butterflies as well that grows on the ground and its daisy's but its a host plant for the dainty Sulphur I'm very smart of host plants and the monk skipper actually lay eggs on grass and got a pic of it and its really amazing. ❤

Hi! That is because the moth is older and has been flying around for a while. Especially if it ran into a building by accident or landed on concrete. When they fly around like attracted to artificial lights, that they rub their scales off on the concrete or walls

I have something extremely strange going on with using the kill jar. So, I got a kill jar for the first time recently, and some specimens literally seem to come back to life. They look dead when I think the gas takes effect, I take them out and they start to move again?? Am I not using enough ethyl acetate?

It could be that there was not enough Ethyl acetate, but it also could be that you did not leave them in long enough. Some bugs are stubborn.

In North Miami Beach area. I've had my shrub for 7+ years and never seen any flowers. But tonight I noticed 2 seed pods. Are they for birds or can I germinate them? Will check closer next morning in daylight if there's flowers or catapillars. Would love to see more butterflies in my garden. Thanks for video. 💜

why are you using the word "euthanize"? Euthanasia: Act or practise of mercy of putting to death a person(or animal) suffering from painful and incurable disease or incapacitating physical disorder. What you are doing has nothing to do with euthanization. The creatures are perfectly healthy. Study them when they are alive (in nature). collect and examine the remains after the lived a full live and died of natural causes. THAT is respect for nature (and science for that matter).

Hey man. Sorry if you were offended. Most of the people that search for this video are trying to find a humane way of euthanizing an injured butterfly or moth that has broken wings or that fell in a pool that is still alive but can no longer fly. Therefore the euthanasia term would certainly apply.

Very cool. Look forward to seeing the rest of the rearing process. I use the same large totes with the blue seals to hold my specimen boxes. I can (snugly) fit 8 of the white cardboard boxes into one tote. Hopefully the seal holds in the fumigant and keeps out the dermestids.
